There is Greek literature, which is the fine art of Greek culture in language. There is Greek history, which is the study of the development of the Greek political and social world through time. Squeezed in between them, marked by each of its neighbors, is Greek culture, an expression, and little more, to indicate ‘the way a people lived,’ their life- style. As you will see, in the following syllabus, the ‘manner of life’ can indeed include the ‘products of the finer arts’—literature, philosophy, by which a people orients itself in its larger meanings—and the ‘manner of life’ can also be understood in terms of the chronological history of a people; but on the whole, and for our purposes here, ‘manner of life’ will tend to mean the way a people builds a society, arranges its eating and drinking habits, builds its places of worship, dispenses its value and ownership codes in terms of an economy, and arranges the ceremonies of marriage burial and social initiation. -

Harris THE RULE OF LAW IN ATHENIAN DEMOCRACY Reflections on the Judicial Oath The rule of law was one of the most important cultural values in Athenian democracy. When delivering the funeral oration for the Athenian soldiers who fell at Lamia in 322 BCE, Hyperides (Epi- taphios, 25) declares: «For men to be happy they must be ruled by the voice of law, not the threats of a man; free men must not be frightened by accusation, only by proof of guilt; and the safety of our citizens must not depend on men who flatter their masters and slander our citizens but on our confidence in the law» (transl. Cooper). In another funeral oration (this one probably not deliv- ered), Lysias (2.19) praises the ancestors of the Athenians because «They thought it characteristic of wild animals to gain power over each other through violence, but that men ought to define what is just by law, persuade each other with reason, and serve both these aims by submitting to the rule of law and being instructed by rea- son» 1. Thucydides (2.37) attributes a similar idea to Pericles in the funeral oration he delivered in 430 BCE: «In public life we do not violate the laws because we obey those in office at any time and the laws, especially those established to help those who are wronged». In the Ephebic Oath, which the young men of Athens swore every year, each ephebe promises to obey the established laws and any laws that may be established prudently in the future 2. -

THE TRUE AGLAURION (PLATES 13-15) IN 1969 the Ephorateof the Akropolisbegan the restorationof the so-called Peripatos,an ancient road or track which in antiquity encircledthe foot of the Akropolis and the old sanctuariesthat nestled in its folds. In the 4th centuryB.C. the Athenians inscribedthe name of the track and its length on the face of a rock which had become detachedand had fallen from the north slope of the Akropolis, coming to rest near the Sanctuary of Eros and Aphrodite. A lack of evidenceleft much to the imaginationin proceedingwith the restoration.But as the objectivewas the reconstitutionin the immediatevicinity of the Akropolis of a topo- graphical element of considerableimportance it was decided that despite this defect work could and should be undertakenfor its restoration,thereby providing a ready approachto this "shadowy",fascinating part of the Akropolisas well as to the numerousold sanctuaries which until then had been hardly accessible. During the first phase of the work, which lasted until 1972,2 the Ephoraterestored the greaterpart of the northernbranch of the Peripatos,starting from the entranceof the fenced archaeologicalarea just west of the Klepsydra and proceedingas far east as the Peripatos inscription.There the work stopped for some years because of the presence,just to the east of the inscription,of a few small houses belongingto the upper part of the districtknown as Anaphiotika.With respect to the ultimate destiny of this quarter, which in those years was expropriated by the Archaeological Service, the opinion of the Akropolis Ephorate was that the Anaphiotika should be preserved for the sake of its picturesque character, an opinion which was also shared by the central authorities of the Ministry of Culture. -

Time and Religion in Hellenistic Athens: An Interpretation of the Little Metropolis Frieze. Monica Haysom School of History, Classics and Archaeology Submitted for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy, Newcastle University, November 2015. ABSTRACT Two stones that form a part of the spolia on the Little Metropolis church (Aghios Eleutherios) in central Athens consist of a frieze depicting a calendar year. The thesis begins with a Preface that discusses the theoretical approaches used. An Introduction follows which, for reference, presents the 41 images on the frieze using the 1932 interpretation of Ludwig Deubner. After evaluating previous studies in Chapter 1, the thesis then presents an exploration of the cultural aspects of time in ancient Greece (Chapter 2). A new analysis of the frieze, based on ancient astronomy, dates the frieze to the late Hellenistic period (Chapter 3); a broad study of Hellenistic calendars identifies it as Macedonian (Chapter 4), and suggests its original location and sponsor (Chapter 5). The thesis presents an interpretation of the frieze that brings the conclusions of these chapters together, developing an argument that includes the art, religion and philosophy of Athenian society contemporary with the construction of the frieze. Given the date, the Macedonian connection and the link with an educational establishment, the final Chapter 6 presents an interpretation based not on the addition of individual images but on the frieze subject matter as a whole. This chapter shows that understanding the frieze is dependent on a number of aspects of the world of artistic connoisseurship in an elite, educated audience of the late Hellenistic period. -

Version 1.0 September 2007 Josiah Ober Stanford The question of what the ancient Greeks can tell us about democracy can be answered by reference to three fields that have traditionally been pursued with little reference to one another: ancient history, classical political theory, and political science. These fields have been coming into more fruitful contact over the last 20 years, as evidenced by a spate of interdisciplinary work. Historians, political theorists, and political scientists interested in classical Greek democracy are increasingly capable of leveraging results across disciplinary lines. As a result, the classical Greek experience has more to tell us about the origins and definition of democracy, and about the relationship between participatory democracy and formal institutions, rhetoric, civic identity, political values, political criticism, war, economy, culture, and religion. It might appear, at first glance, that there is no coherent scholarly or academic “us” who might be told something of value by studies of the ancient Greeks. The political legacy of the Greeks is very important to three major branches of scholarship -- ancient history, political theory, and political science -- and at least of collateral importance to a good many others (for example anthropology, communications, and literary studies). Ancient Greek history, political theory, and political science are distinctly different intellectual traditions, with distinctive forms of expression. Very few theorists or political scientists, for example, assume that their audiences have a reading knowledge of ancient Greek; few theorists or historians assume a knowledge of mathematics, statistics, or game theory; few historians or political scientists are comfortable with the vocabulary of normative and evaluative philosophy. -

Where information has been derived from other sources, I confirm that this has been indicated in the thesis. 2 Abstract This dissertation presents a new interpretative synthesis of the sources relating to the cults, identities, and functions of the god Ares, focusing on the Archaic and Classic periods. An apparent dichotomy is identified: in many respects, the evidence suggests that Ares must have been a very important god throughout much of the Greek world throughout the Archaic and Classic periods (and beyond), but in other respects the evidence suggests that he was not. I argue that this dichotomy does not derive from changes in the popularity, relevance, or nature of the god, as has been proposed. Instead, I argue that the elements of Ares’ cults and representations which suggest that Ares was unpopular or unimportant derive from those which made him important and continually relevant. I argue that because Ares was identified with war, attitudes towards the god directly reflect Greek attitudes towards war. War’s importance as an element of Greek life, and the god’s power as a causal force with it, led to deep respect for Ares, reflected by widespread cult, and a place among the great Olympians. But the wild, destructive, and unpredictable nature of war, which Ares represented, meant that he was not a regular recipient of large-scale celebratory cult. -

ABSTRACT This thesis investigates the metics, or resident aliens, in democratic Athens and how they affected ideas of identity, with a particular focus on the fourth century BC. It looks at definitions of the metics and how the restrictions and obligations which marked their status operated; how these affected their lives and their image, in their own eyes and those of the Athenians; how the Athenians erected and maintained a boundary of status and identity between themselves and the metics, in theory and in practice; and how individuals who crossed this boundary could present themselves and be characterised, especially in the public context of the lawcourts. The argument is that the metics served as a contradiction of and challenge to Athenian ideas about who they were and what made them different from others. -

WOMEN AND OATHS IN EURIPIDES /29 Women and Oaths in Euripides Judith Fletcher “The oath is what holds democracy together,” claimed the Athenian orator Lycurgus, whose democracy was composed exclusively of men.1 Athens was the definitive phallogocentric community where public discursive practices such as the oath were the prerogative of male citizens who competed for power in the agora, the assembly, and the lawcourts. Euripides, however, represents the disquieting occurrence of women tendering oaths from men, a phenomenon that challenges the gendered hierarchy of his society.2 In this article I explore how three Euripidean dramas, Medea, Hippolytus, and Iphigenia in Tauris, allow women to use these potent speech acts to control men’s language and action.3 By tendering promissory oaths Euripides’ female characters cite a conventional social practice that is intrinsically performative; oath taking scenes are reflective both of the world external to the drama and of the dramatic performance itself.
