Moncell Durden., Assistant Professor of Practice University of Southern California Glorya Kaufman School of Dance Introduction Hip-hop dance has become one of the most popular forms of dance expression in the world. The explosion of hip-hop movement and culture in the 1980s provided unprecedented opportunities to inner-city youth to gain a different access to the “American” dream; some companies saw the value in using this new art form to market their products for commercial and consumer growth. This explosion also aided in an early downfall of hip-hop’s first dance form, breaking. The form would rise again a decade later with a vengeance, bringing older breakers out of retirement and pushing new generations to develop the technical acuity to extraordinary levels of artistic corporeal genius. We will begin with hip-hop’s arduous beginnings. Born and raised on the sidewalks and playgrounds of New York’s asphalt jungle, this youthful energy that became known as hip-hop emerged from aspects of cultural expressions that survived political abandonment, economic struggles, environmental turmoil and gang activity. These living conditions can be attributed to high unemployment, exceptionally organized drug distribution, corrupt police departments, a failed fire department response system, and Robert Moses’ building of the Cross-Bronx Expressway, which caused middle and upper-class residents to migrate North. The South Bronx lost 600,000 jobs and displaced more than 5,000 families. Between 1973 and 1977, and more than 30,000 fires were set in the South Bronx, which gave rise to the phrase “The Bronx is Burning.” This marginalized the black and Latino communities and left the youth feeling unrepresented, and hip-hop gave restless inner-city kids a voice.

Initially misunderstood as a faddish form of Black male musical expression, Hip-hop's cultural resistance practices were quickly recognized as four core elements (emceeing, turntablism, graffiti art, and b-boying/b-girling). In the global context, Hip-hop has generated scholarly discourse that points to either the cultural globalization of American Blackness or a "global village." My project interrupts this conversation and focuses on the unique, multi-site cultural history of Filipino identity as constituted through practitioners of Hip-Hop dance.     Social Media Analytics for YouTube Comments: Potential and Limitations1 Mike Thelwall School of Mathematics and Computing, University of Wolverhampton, UK The need to elicit public opinion about predefined topics is widespread in the social sciences, government and business. Traditional survey-based methods are being partly replaced by social media data mining but their potential and limitations are poorly understood. This article investigates this issue by introducing and critically evaluating a systematic social media analytics strategy to gain insights about a topic from YouTube. The results of an investigation into sets of dance style videos show that it is possible to identify plausible patterns of subtopic difference, gender and sentiment. The analysis also points to the generic limitations of social media analytics that derive from their fundamentally exploratory multi-method nature. Keywords: social media analytics; YouTube comments; opinion mining; gender; sentiment; issues Introduction Questionnaires, interviews and focus groups are standard social science and market research methods for eliciting opinions from the public, service users or other specific groups. In industry, mining social media for opinions expressed in public seems to be standard practice with commercial social media analytics software suites that include an eclectic mix of data mining tools (e.g., Fan & Gordon, 2014). Within academia, there is also a drive to generate effective methods to mine the social web (Stieglitz, Dang-Xuan, Bruns, & Neuberger, 2014). Litwack, Co-Chair Professor Waldo E. Martin, Jr., Co-Chair “Gangster Boogie” details the early development of hip-hop music in Los Angeles, a city that, in the 1980s, the international press labeled the “murder capital of the U.S.” The rap music most associated with the region, coined “gangsta rap,” has been regarded by scholars, cultural critics, and audiences alike as a tabloid distortion of East Coast hip-hop. The dissertation shows that this uniquely provocative genre of hip-hop was forged by Los Angeles area youth as a tool for challenging civic authorities, asserting regional pride, and exploiting the nation’s growing fascination with the ghetto underworld. Those who fashioned themselves “gangsta rappers” harnessed what was markedly difficult about life in black Los Angeles from the early 1970s through the Reagan Era––rising unemployment, project living, crime, violence, drugs, gangs, and the ever-increasing problem of police harassment––to create what would become the benchmark for contemporary hip-hop music. My central argument is that this music, because of the social, political, and economic circumstances from which it emerged, became a vehicle for underclass empowerment during the Reagan Era.

Jag vill också finna aspekter som finns för en undervisning som tilltalar och engagerar fler elever. För att besvara syftet genomfördes intervjuer med lärare, gruppintervjuer med elever, samt enkäter för både lärare och elever. Insamlat material bearbetades till kategorier. Resultaten tyder på att det inte skett någon större förändring hur dansundervisningen bedrivs i jämförelse med tidigare studier. Nästan en tredjedel av undervisningen handlar om kulturell dans, en fjärdedel där eleverna skapar egen dans och en femtedel med dans som träningsform. Centralt för både lärare och elever för en bra undervisning var musiken. Där musiken kan bidra till att eleverna börjar dansa spontant om de hör en bra låt. Dans ansgås vara en flickaktivitet, vilket kan vara en av anledningarna till en låg aktivitet hos pojkar under danslektionerna.
