DOCTOR WHO AND THE CREATION OF A NON-GENDERED HERO ARCHETYPE Alessandra J. Pelusi 85 Pages December 2014 This thesis investigates the ways in which the television program Doctor Who forges a new, non-gendered, hero archetype from the amalgamation of its main characters. In order to demonstrate how this is achieved, I begin with reviewing some of the significant and relevant characters that contribute to this. I then examine the ways in which female and male characters are represented in Doctor Who, including who they are, their relationship with the Doctor, and what major narrative roles they play. I follow this with a discussion of the significance of the companion, including their status as equal to the Doctor. From there, I explore the ways in which the program utilizes existing archetypes by subverting them and disrupting the status quo.

Jumpchain CYOA Version 1.0 By blackshadow111 Introduction Welcome, Jumper, to a world without peer. Time travel, space travel, reality travel...basically every travel not only exists here, but is rather common and achievable! A world with Time Lords, hate-filled salt shakers, sapient stars and much, much more! This is a world full of tremendous wonders, of bright and glorious things, beautiful sights and unimaginable delights! Step in, go around, see the sights and have fun! It is also full of hideous horror, unfortunate implications, wars and conflicts that can rip apart entire galaxies and time-spans, memetic horrors and nightmares. Step carefully, lest someone else end up treating you as their fun. Either way, you will need these 1 000 CP. Go on, shoot your own series! Time and Place Being honest, neither time nor place mean all that much here. So we’ll be doing this a tad differently. Start out wherever and whenever you like that isn’t a fixed point in time or otherwise a part of the Time War. Now spend a total of ten years of your own personal duration in this universe, regardless of whatever era those years may be lived in. Age and Gender You may choose your age and gender freely, within the limitations of whatever your species is. This show has had adventure opportunities for everyone from children to octagenarians, and that’s just the humans. Origins Madman: Without a box! Or maybe with a box. Who knows? You arrive as you are, a stranger in a strange land.

Name of collection Why isn't Doctor Who a vegan? Contributors name: Dr Who Hello. Are you a Silurian? Unless you Silurians tell us what you want, the humans will destroy you! Twice, we offered the hand of friendship to these ape-descended primitives. And twice we were treacherously attacked. It will not happen again. 1970, John Pertwee is the dashing new Doctor. The show's broadcast in colour for the first time. And we meet the Silurians. Created by writer Malcolm Hulke, the Silurians were the planet's dominant species until their scientist slipped up big time. They predicted a tiny planet would smash into Earth. So they buried themselves away and went into hibernation, intending to sleep until the whole thing blew over. But that planet was the moon! It slips into orbit. The smash never happened. But humanity did. When one branch of Silurians was woken up by some nearby industrial work, they weren't happy. Ahem-- I'm sorry to burst in on you like this. Did you enter our base? To be fair, some of their race wanted peace with mankind. Shall I just destroy him? No. Take him to the cages. Others, not so much. Have you seen the humans yet? Have you spoken to them? I have destroyed them. And now I shall destroy you. [CLANG] The old leader of the pack was killed by the new leader, who promptly released the virus. And this happened. The Doctor created an antidote. Hurrah! Tried to broker a peace-- Hurrah! Splendid. But this went off.

Leslie McMurtry Swansea University Doctor Who, Steampunk, and the Victorian Christmas “It’s everywhere these days, isn’t it? Anime, Doctor Who, novel after novel involving clockwork and airships.” --Catherynne M. Valente1 Introduction It seems nearly every article or essay on Neo-Victorianism must, by tradition, begin with a defence of the discipline and an explanation of what is currently encompassed by the term— or, more likely, what is not. Since at least 2008 and the launch of the interdisciplinary journal Neo-Victorian Studies, scholars have been grappling with a catch-all definition for the term. Though it is appropriate that Mark Llewellyn should note in his 2008 “What Is Neo-Victorian Studies?” that “in bookstores and TV guides all around us what we see is the ‘nostalgic tug’ that the (quasi-) Victorian exerts on the mainstream,” Imelda Whelehan is right to suggest that the novel is the supreme and legitimizing source2.

London: Karnac, 2014. xxvii + 339pp. £19.99 (pbk). It must have been a slow news week at the end of May last year, and a confusing time at the Daily Mail offices in London. A bunch of presumably lefty – and foreign! – academics and fans were criticising Doctor Who’s racism. Although the Mail knows, just knows, that the BBC is a left-wing conspiracy and that the corporation’s privatisation is the very key to the survival of civilisation (see, for example, Kelly), the tabloid put aside its fury at public service broadcasting, rallied all the small- minded jingoism for which it is renowned and leaped to the series’ defence. Momentarily abandoning its anti-immigrant scare-mongering and Islamophobic harangues, the Mail, whose long track record of ‘not being racist’ is why it is so widely revered as the keenest arbiter of such matters, set the record straight. Under a long-winded headline and a couple of pretty meaningless bullet points, we were presented, really quite surprisingly, with a not-inaccurate summary of Lindy Orthia’s Doctor Who and Race, outlining some of its perfectly reasonable criticisms of the show as if they were damning indictments of the book.

LATE ORDOVICIAN – EARLY SILURIAN TERRESTRIAL BIOTAS OF VIRGINIA, OHIO, AND PENNSYLVANIA: AN INVESTIGATION INTO THE EARLY COLONIZATION OF LAND A dissertation presented to the faculty of the College of Arts and Sciences of Ohio University In partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree Doctor of Philosophy Alexandru Mihail Florian Tomescu November 2004 © 2004 Alexandru Mihail Florian Tomescu All Rights Reserved This dissertation entitled LATE ORDOVICIAN – EARLY SILURIAN TERRESTRIAL BIOTAS OF VIRGINIA, OHIO, AND PENNSYLVANIA: AN INVESTIGATION INTO THE EARLY COLONIZATION OF LAND BY ALEXANDRU MIHAIL FLORIAN TOMESCU has been approved for the Department of Biological Sciences and the College of Arts and Sciences by Gar W. Rothwell Distinguished Professor of Environmental and Plant Biology Leslie A. Flemming Dean, College of Arts and Sciences TOMESCU, ALEXANDRU MIHAIL FLORIAN. Ph.D. November 2004. Biological Sciences Late Ordovician – Early Silurian terrestrial biotas of Virginia, Ohio, and Pennsylvania: an investigation into the early colonization of land (284 pp.) Director of Dissertation: Gar W. Rothwell An early phase in the colonization of land is documented by investigation of three fossil compression biotas from Passage Creek (Silurian, Llandoverian, Virginia), Kiser Lake (Silurian, Llandoverian, Ohio), and Conococheague Mountain (Ordovician, Ashgillian, Pennsylvania). A framework for investigation of the colonization of land is constructed by (1) a review of hypotheses on the origin of land plants; (2) a summary of the fossil record of terrestrial biotas; (3) an assessment of the potential of different continental depositional environments to preserve plant remains; (4) a reevaluation of Ordovician-Silurian fluvial styles based on published data; and (5) a review of pertinent data on biological soil crusts, which are considered the closest modern analogues of early terrestrial communities.

  • Silurian Rocks of Michigan and Their Correlation
SILURIAN ROCKS OF MICHIGAN AND THEIR CORRELATION George M. Ehlers and Robert V. Kesling University of Michigan INTRODUCTION Silurian strata are exposed in the Northern Peninsula in a broad, arcuate, east-west belt on the north- ern flank of the Michigan Basin. This belt borders the northern shores of Lake Michigan, the Straits of Mackinac, and Lake Huron and extends from the Garden Peninsula and nearby islands on the east side of Big Bay de Noc (Delta and Schoolcraft Counties) to the eastern shore of Drummond Island (Chippewa County). Some strata of this belt belonging to the Lime Island dolomite and 12 feet of the overlying Byron dolomite also crop out in a small distant outlier, Limestone Mountain (Fig. 2), located about 12 miles west of Baraga, Baraga County, and about 1/2 mile northeast of Hazel, Houghton County, Michi- gan (Case and Robinson, 1915, p. 173; Ehlers and Kesling, 1957, p. 9). In the Northern Peninsula, the combination of resistant Niagaran dolomites and soft underlying strata has produced, with erosion, a prominent cuesta. This conspicuous topographic feature extends through the Northern Peninsula, Cockburn and Manitoulin Islands, the Bruce Peninsula, the region of Hamilton, Ontario, and thence to Niagara Falls. Because of lateral differences in erosion of the Niagaran strata in northern Michigan, the beds forming the escarpment vary. In the Garden Peninsula, it is the rocks of the Burnt Bluff group (overlying the soft Moss Lake strata) that form the picturesque cliffs along the western edge of the peninsula. East of Trout Lake, it is the Engadine dolomite that caps the escarpment arid forms the long back slope gently inclined toward the center of the Michigan Basin.
