BANARAS HINDU UNIVERSITY Department of Bengali Session: 2011-2012 and onwards In accordance with the decision of the Academic Council of the University, the Faculty of Arts is pleased to introduce Semester System from the session 2004-05 for the Post-Graduate Course. It is hoped that such a System will give a new direction and relevance to all the Post-Graduate Course. In the light of introduction of Semester, focus has been concentrated on the different aspects of literature. In view of existence of different departments teaching, Indian & Foreign language in B.H.U, emphasis has been made for teaching of comparative literature. However, the syllabus has been enriched to contain the different aspects of Bengali literature in the Deptt. of Bengali. The Two-years Postgraduate Course will be divisible within 4 Semesters with credit system. A credit consists of attending lectures, active participation in tutorials (class test), seminars (paper presentation), field works, viva-voce etc. A student will be required to complete 16 Courses within 4 Semesters (two years) with 80 Credits. There are three categories of Courses 1- CORE COURSES 2- MAJOR ELECTIVE COURSES 3- MINOR ELECTIVE COURSES Proposed Structure for Semester Courses in MA. Bengali M.A. Course in Bengali will comprise of 4 (four) Semesters. Each semester will have 4 Courses. In all, there will be 16 Courses with total 80 credits. Of these, 8 Courses will be treated as Core Courses of 5 credits each, 4 Courses as Major Elective Courses of 5 credits each and 4 Courses as Minor Elective Courses of 5 credits each. -

A. Macdonnell In Imagined Communities, Benedict Anderson made famous the argument that the nation lives in homogeneous empty time. In this argument, he follows a dominant strand in modern historical thinking that imagines the social space of modernity as distributed in homogeneous empty space what a Marxist would call the time of Capital. Anderson explicitly adopts the formulation from Walter Benjamin and uses it to show the material possibilities of large anonymous societies formulated by the simultaneous experiences of reading the daily newspaper and following the private lives of popular fi ctional characters (Chatterjee, Th e Politics of the Governed 4). But, what happens in the case of a community that is defi ned by an epic and that extends from a pre-capitalist to a capitalist time? Imagine a situation where stories are shared independently of the literacy of the people and of what we understand as the media. How is this situation conducive to the construction of an imagined community? Th ere is one such community that spans at least three-fourths of Asia, encompassing hundreds of linguistic and ethnic groups that share neither national boundaries nor a religious identity nor even the “same” story, since there was and still is not any sanction to restrict the story into one “original” version. -

International Journal of English Literature and Social Sciences (IJELS) Vol-3, Issue-2, Mar - Apr, 2018 https://dx.doi.org/10.22161/ijels.3.2.6 ISSN: 2456-7620 Western Influences on the three Bengali Poets of the 30s Sultana Jahan Assistant Professor, Department of English Language and Literature, International Islamic University Chittagong, Bangladesh Abstract— Modernism came to exercise an influence in Bangladesh's poets in the way it once did with Baudelaire and Eliot. For these western poets, the romantic notion was replaced with desperation and despondency and loneliness of modern minds. JibanadaDas, Budda Dev Bose, shudindranath Dutt, Amiochacrabarti, and Bishnudey, all of them being the professors of English Literature, successfully incorporated Western Modernist outlook with a view to shaking off Tagore’s romantic perception.They were much influenced by French imagist and symbolist movement, French surrealist poets, Garman expressionist poets and other modernists. Sometimes they incorporates Eatsian ideology, sometimes they followed Eliotic view, and sometimes they followed Marxist Theory or Freudian psychoanalysis. Though, these modernist poets take on different styles and ways to reveal the alienation, hypocrisy and anxiety of modern man, they perceive the fact that to reflect the post-war modern world, there is no alternative of discarding romantic notion about life. This paper will shed light on three poets, Jibananda Das, AmioCakrabarti, and BishnuDey and the Western Modernist philosophy that has molded their poetic career. Most people throughout life remain unaware of the ‘individual self,’ the foundation of one’s identity, and tread on the known ways of the society to make life meaningful. Consequently, the ‘being’ of such a person fails to come to existence. Only a few are ever able to become conscious of this ‘self’ in moments of pure reflection enabled by a complete divorce from the social presence. The consciousness leads to a concurrent awareness of the meaninglessness of the world and the true concept of freedom. Freedom fetches agony with the realization of the sole responsibility of one’s choice. A person is then either on the way to construct the meaning of life and find happiness in a personalized way or get crushed at the burden of his anguish. The consciousness of the individual self, the awareness of personal freedom in a fundamentally meaningless world, and the consequence of this consciousness in both its aspects – all the facets of man’s existential problem have been portrayed in the lines of the great Bengali poet Jibanananda Das (1899 – 1954) with poignancy and vividness. We can, at the same time, parallel the situation presented in his poetry with his personal life.
