(Check local listings.) In this Rossini classic based on the work by Sir Walter Scott, DiDonato sings the title role of Elena, the lady of the lake pursued by two men, with Flórez in the role of Giacomo, the benevolent king of Scotland. Michele Mariotti , last featured in the Great Performance at the Met broadcast of Rigoletto , conducts debuting Scottish director Paul Curran's staging, a co-production with Santa Fe Opera. The cast also includes Daniela Barcellona in the trouser role of Malcolm, John Osborn as Rodrigo, and Oren Gradus as Duglas. "The wondrous Ms. DiDonato and Mr. Mariotti, the fast-rising young Italian conductor, seemed almost in competition to see who could make music with more delicacy,” noted The New York Times earlier this year, and “Mr. Mariotti drew hushed gentle and transparent playing from the inspired Met orchestra.” And NY Classical Review raved, "Joyce DiDonato…was beyond perfect.. -

Give Me Excess of Hampson
Play On: Give Me Excess of Hampson By Janos Gereben—October 2, 2008 Humans, in general, mellow with age. Thomas Hampson doesn't. Au contraire, he is more intense, dramatic, overwhelming, multitasking, brilliant than ever. Beyond the simple excellence of his other master classes, such as the one in Wigmore or in the old S.F. Conservatory of Music, his six hours over Thursday and tonight went beyond all expectations. Here he was, in the new Conservatory building, at the first "LIEDER ALIVE!" master workshop, singing duets of traditionally "single-voice" lieder, massaging skulls (his own and those of others), discussing music, literature, psychology, anatomy, the transporter beaming process in "Star Trek" (more about that later), and other subjects too numerous to list. The two evenings were reminiscent of what was going on in the nearby War Memorial: the amaZing excess, surfeit, daZZle of "Die Tote Stadt." Another similarity: above all, both events are about music, other factors - however numerous - be damned. And yet, sometimes it was difficult to remember that main theme, watching Katherine Tier surrounded by Hampson phantoms - one pressing in on the meZZo's cheekbones, the other singing "Kindertotenlieder" with her, the third in throes of the grief and resolution she should convey, and the fourth thundering an interpretation of the text speaking of the eyes of dead children becoming stars of future nights: "It happens. Your children will not stay with you. And guess what: you will die too. It's OK." And suddenly, instead of crumbling under that manifold "attack," Tier sang "Nun seh'ich, wohl, warum so dunkle Flammen" beautifully, with an understanding of its subtle catharsis, rather than sentimentally. -

SALZBURGER FESTSPIELE PFINGSTEN Künstlerische Leitung: Cecilia Bartoli La couleur du temps – The Colour of Time Pauline Viardot-Garcia (1821 – 1910) Photo: Uli Weber - Decca Salzburg Whitsun Festival 29 May – 1 June 2020 (SF, 30 December 2019) The life of Pauline Viardot-Garcia – singer, musical ambassador of Europe, outstanding pianist and composer – is the focus of the 2020 programme of the Salzburg Whitsun Festival. “The uncanny instinct Cecilia Bartoli has for the themes of our times is proven once again by her programme for the 2020 Salzburg Whitsun Festival, which focuses on Pauline Viardot. Orlando Figes has just written a bestseller about this woman. Using Viardot as an example, he describes the importance of art within the idea of Europe,” says Festival President Helga Rabl-Stadler. 1 SALZBURGER FESTSPIELE PFINGSTEN Künstlerische Leitung: Cecilia Bartoli Pauline Viardot not only made a name for herself as a singer, composer and pianist, but her happy marriage with the French theatre manager, author and art critic Louis Viardot furthered her career and enabled her to act as a great patron of the arts. Thus, she made unique efforts to save the autograph of Mozart’s Don Giovanni for posterity. Don Giovanni was among the manuscripts Constanze Mozart had sold to Johann Anton André in Offenbach in 1799. After his death in 1842, his daughter inherited the autograph and offered it to libraries in Vienna, Berlin and London – without success. In 1855 her cousin, the pianist Ernst Pauer, took out an advertisement in the London-based journal Musical World. Thereupon, Pauline Viardot-García bought the manuscript for 180 pounds. -
