Your children need to be outdoors every day, they need the exercise and the chance to explore new things to touch, smell, see, hear and feel.

They also need to spend some quiet time with you every day - listening to a story you make up about their day, a story you tell about your childhood or read from a book. You’ll never run out of books, the local libraries are full of great reading experiences. Things to do at home Your home has many great opportunities for learning through playing. Children love to help with cooking, setting the table, and washing the dishes. They love to put pairs of socks together when you’ve finished the laundry. They can look through the grocery flyers and help make your shopping list. All these activities are full of new information and experiences for them and give them a chance to feel important and close to you. Rainy days For rainy days, play dough, water play, painting and drawing are fun activities inside. Empty cereal and cracker boxes and a roll of masking tape can let their imagination take off. Put a blanket over the table for an indoor tent, add a few pillows and plastic dishes and your children can have a play house.

Yes, these games and activities can make a mess, but they are so important for your children’s development. They learn how the world works and they learn to amuse themselves.

We’re including a play dough recipe and a list of suggestions of indoor and outdoor activities for your family. We know you know all these things, but sometimes we’re all too tired to think for ourselves and need some help! Cooked playdough You will need:

• 1 c. flour • 1 c. water • 1/2 c. salt • 2 tbsp. oil • 2 tsp. cream of tartar • 1 tsp. food coloring

Combine 1 cup flour, 1/2 cup salt and 2 teaspoons cream of tartar in a large saucepan. Gradually stir in 1 cup water mixed with 2 tablespoons oil and 1 teaspoon food coloring. Cook over medium to high heat, stirring constantly until a ball forms. Remove from heat, cool and knead until smooth.
