Chroot basically redefines the universe for a program. More accurately, it redefines the "ROOT" directory or "/" for a program or login session. Basically, everything outside of the directory you use chroot on doesn't exist as far a program or shell is concerned. Why is this useful? If someone breaks into your computer, they won't be able to see all the files on your system. Not being able to see your files limits the commands they can do and also doesn't give them the ability to exploit other files that are insecure. The only drawback is, I believe it doesn't stop them from looking at network connections and other stuff. Thus, you want to do a few more things which we won't get into in this article too much: Secure your networking ports. Have all services run as a service under a non-root account. In addition, have all services chrooted. Forward syslogs to another computer. Analyze logs files Analyze people trying to detect random ports on your computer Limit cpu and memory resources for a service. Activate account quotas. The reason why I consider chroot (with a non-root service) to be a line of defense is, if someone breaks in under a non-root account, and there are no files which they can use to break into root, then they can only limit damage to the area they break in. -

IT1100 : Introduction to Operating Systems Chapter 15 What is a partition? A partition is just a logical division of your hard drive. This is done to put data in different locations for flexibility, scalability, ease of administration, and a variety of other reasons. One reason might be so you can install Linux and Windows side-by-side. What is a partition? Another reason is to encapsulate your data. Keeping your system files and user files separate can protect one or the otherfrom malware. Since file system corruption is local to a partition, you stand to lose only some of your data if an accident occurs. Upgrading and/or reformatting is easier when your personal files are stored on a separate partition. Limit data growth. Runaway processes or maniacal users can consume so much disk space that the operating system no longer has room on the hard drive for its bookkeeping operations. This will lead to disaster. By segregating space, you ensure that things other than the operating system die when allocated disk space is exhausted. Linux Partitions In Linux, a minimum of 1 partition is required for the / . Mounting is the action of connecting a filesystem/partition to a particular point in the / root filesystem. I.e. When a usb stick is inserted, it is assigned a particular mount point and is available to the filesytem tree. - In windows you might have an A:, or B:, or C:, all of which point to different filesystems. What is Swap? If RAM fills up, by running too many processes or a process with a memory leak, new processes will fail if your system doesn’t have a way to extend system memory. -

Why is C. diff so hard to culture and kill? Clostridium difficile, commonly referred to as C. diff, is the #1 nosocomial infection in hospitals (it actually kicked staph infections out of the top spot). At Assurance, we test for this organism as part of our Gastrointestinal (GI) panel. C. diff is a gram-positive anaerobe, meaning it does not like oxygen. Its defensive mechanism is sporulation – where it essentially surrounds itself with a tough outer layer of keratin and can live in water, soil, etc. for over a decade. For reference, anthrax is another organism that sporulates. Once C. diff sporulates, it is very hard to kill and in fact, bleach is one of the only disinfectants that work. Unfortunately, it can spread quickly throughout hospitals. Spores of C. diff are found all over hospital surfaces and even in some hospital water systems. It’s the most threatening for those who are immunocompromised or the elderly, who are the most likely to end up with C. diff infections. With our PCR testing, we’re looking for the C. diff organism itself but we’re also looking at the production of toxin. Unless it produces toxins A AND B together OR toxin B, C. diff doesn’t cause severe disease. Many babies are exposed to it during birth or in the hospitals and may test positive on our GI panel. Unless they are expressing those toxins (both toxin A&B or just toxin B) it is not considered a clinical infection. Studies show that toxins A&B together causes infection, as well as toxin B. -
