    Gordon Davis- Forward Look Designer G. Gordon Davis was born and raised in Ludington, MI during the Great Depression. As soon as he could hold a pencil, he drew cars. He was still drawing cars when he was accepted into the University of Notre Dame in 1953. His sketches from that time were discovered by Bob Bourke, then Director of Design at Studebaker in South Bend, IN. At Bourke’s suggestion, Davis transferred to the Art Center School in Los Angeles (now the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena CA) where he studied automotive design. As an Art Center alumnus, Davis was hired by Director of Design, Virgil Exner, at Chrysler Corp. It was fortuitous, as it was the dawn of the legendary Forward Look era. First assigned to the Advanced Design Studio, Davis contributed to Chrysler’s turbine concept designs. He was soon transferred to the Chrysler Studio where his 1957 Forward Look that visualized future concepts inspired Exner’s Ghia-built XNR prototype. The XNR in turn influenced Chrysler’s early 1960s product lineup. By late 1957, Davis was assigned to the DeSoto Studio where he designed the exterior trim for the 1959 DeSoto. Although the ’59 DeSoto’s sheet metal had been approved by 1957, the “jewelry” had not. Davis designed the eagle medallions that appeared on the front bumper and deck lid, the DeSoto lettering, the Firesweep side moldings, the “turbine” wheel covers, and the optional bumperettes. Davis was one of three Chrysler designers recruited by Exner’s second-in-command Wm. Schmidt, when Chrysler management gave Schmidt a contract to design concepts independently of Exner.

    My 1955 Dodge Custom Royal Lancer By Steve White John and Horace Dodge opened their machine works in Detroit in 1900 to supply parts and major assemblies for early auto manufacturers. Success at this led them to start their own auto manufacturing business in 1914. It didn’t take long for the Dodge Brothers brand to climb to third place in overall car sales. But after both brothers died in 1920, a leadership vacuum led to a sharp drop in sales and the sale of the company to Walter P. Chrysler in 1928. By 1929, Chrysler’s vision led to a hierarchy of cars designed to fit various income brackets: Plymouth was the entry-level car; Dodge was one step up; DeSoto was one up from there; and Chrysler was the corporate flagship. Under this plan, all Chrysler brands had definite family traits: Their appearance was nearly identical except for graduated size and distinctive trim, most notably the grilles. And they shared scaled mechanical features, with Plymouth getting the smallest engines and Chrysler getting the largest. Known for excellent engineering, the Chrysler Corporation nonetheless was buffeted through the years by periodic sales slumps that threatened the company’s existence. One such downturn was in the early 50s when their outdated and stodgy appearance caught up with them. By then, nearly all their competitors had broken away from prewar looks with striking new designs, many inspired by the latest in aeronautics. Finally facing up to the challenge, Chrysler lured Virgil Exner away from Raymond Loewy. Closely associated with Studebaker, Loewy’s firm had penned some of the great postwar designs.

The buried car is actually a 1957 1/2 Plymouth because it has the revised mid-year grille. The area below the raised bumper bar - with the six wide vertical slots - was changed mid-year to add an additional vertical strip in each of the six slots to narrow the width and thus improve the appearance. Given its abstract shape and gold finish, the '57 version of Plymouth's traditional Mayflower sailing ship logo that graced the grille and deck lid was referred to by the stylists as the "potato chip." The 1957 cars were known internally within Chrysler as the "K" series. Plymouth production totaled 729,369 cars for the 1957 model run. The runaway success of the '57 Plymouth enabled Plymouth division to recapture third place in sales from Buick. Chrysler Corporation vehicles in 1957 used about 100 pounds in weight-saving aluminum per vehicle versus a then-industry average of 45 pounds. On April 19, 1957, Chrysler Corporation cars - including Plymouth - achieved an unprecedented clean sweep of the 1,568 mile Los Angles to Sun Valley Mobilgas Economy Run, winning in every class.

    Contact: Brandt Rosenbusch Chrysler Brand Heritage Chronology 1875-1912: Kansas-born Walter Chrysler, son of a locomotive engineer, was connected to the transportation industries throughout his life. His love of machinery prompted him to forsake a college education for a machinist’s apprenticeship, and his early career comprised numerous mechanical jobs in the railroad industry. 1912-1920: In 1912, Chrysler joined General Motors as manager of its Buick manufacturing plant, becoming president of the Buick division four years later. After parting ways with GM in 1919, Chrysler began a second career as a “doctor of ailing automakers,” strengthening first Willys-Overland, then the Maxwell Motor Corporation. 1920-1924: Chrysler teamed up with three ex-Studebaker engineers, Fred Zeder, Owen Skelton and Carl Breer, to design a revolutionary new car. They defined what the products of the Chrysler brand would be – affordable “luxury” vehicles known for innovative, top-flight engineering. 1924: The first was the 1924 Chrysler Six, an all-new car priced at $1,565 that featured two significant innovations – a light, powerful, high-compression six-cylinder engine and the first use of four-wheel hydraulic brakes in a moderately priced vehicle. The well-equipped Chrysler Six also featured aluminum pistons, replaceable oil and air filters, full- pressure lubrication, tubular front axles, shock absorbers and indirect interior lighting. 1925: After securing a $5,000,000 loan to start production, Chrysler sold over 32,000 units of the Chrysler Six in its first year. The Maxwell company soon had a new name: Chrysler Corporation. In 1925, the firm boasted more than 3, 800 dealers, sold over 100,000 cars and ranked fifth in the industry.
