Page 2 Proposed Extension: Alrewas Quarry RT-MME-108718 Extended Phase I Habitat Survey EXECUTIVE SUMMARY Middlemarch Environmental Ltd was commissioned by Lafarge Aggregates to carry out an initial ecological appraisal of a Alrewas Quarry and a proposed extension area located near Lichfield in Staffordshire. The phase 1 habitat information will inform an Environmental Impact Assessment. To fulfil this brief an ecological desk study and Extended Phase I Habitat Survey were undertaken. The ecological desk study identified one statutory nature conservation site within a 2 km radius of the surveyed area boundary. This site is the River Mease Special Area of Conservation (SAC) and Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) which is located approximately 800 m from the survey area at its closest point. Although a detailed assessment of potential impacts on this site has not been completed, it is considered unlikely that there will be any direct impacts to this SAC / SSSI (particularly as the River Trent lies between the study site and the River Mease) but there may be some potential for indirect impacts as a result of quarrying activities. Seventeen non-statutory nature conservation sites occur within the 2 km search radius from the site boundaries, of which the closest, the A513 Road Verges Site of Biological Interest (SBI), is located within the survey area. In addition, Brookhay Wood SBI abuts the southern boundary of the site. Although a detailed assessment of the development proposals on these sites has not yet been completed, it is anticipated that assuming that the sites are not directly or indirectly impacted (through dewatering for example) and providing appropriate measures are implemented during site works it is anticipated that impacts on non-statutory sites will be negligible. The desk study highlighted the presence of a variety of protected notable species within the 2 km search radius including amphibians, badger, bats, birds, otter and water vole. The field survey identified habitat considered likely to support many of these faunal groups. The Extended Phase 1 Habitat Survey was undertaken in late 2010 and early 2011 by Tim Hextell (Principal Technical Ecological Consultant). The survey identified the presence of a large selection of habitats including extensive arable farmland, active / disused / restored gravel workings, mixed grasslands, open water, scattered trees, scrub and boundary hedgerows. Details of the proposed works at the site are not known by Middlemarch Environmental Ltd at this stage but it is considered that a significant proportion of the survey area is likely to be of limited ecological value due to its highly managed nature e.g. arable farmland. It is recommended that consultation with Natural England and the Local Planning Authority ecologist / Staffordshire Wildlife Trust be completed with respect to the potential effects on statutory and non-statutory nature conservation sites. In order to fully inform the ecological resource within the study site, and therefore the potential impact of the proposed development, it is recommended that if the proposed works are likely to impact on these species then field surveys be undertaken for amphibians (particularly great crested newts), badger, bats, breeding birds, otter and white-clawed crayfish. INTRODUCTION 1.1 PROJECT BACKGROUND In November 2010 Lafarge Aggregates commissioned Middlemarch Environmental Ltd to undertake an initial ecological appraisal of the existing Alrewas Quarry and surrounding farmland in Staffordshire. It is understood that an Extended Phase 1 Habitat Survey of the site is required in order to inform the ecological aspect of an Environmental Impact Assessment. To fulfil the above brief to assess the existing ecological interest of the site, a desk study Extended Phase 1 Habitat Survey visits were undertaken during November and December 2010 and in January and February 2011. In addition, Middlemarch Environmental Ltd has been commissioned to undertake a wintering bird survey at the site (Middlemarch Environmental Ltd report RT-MME-108633). 1.2 SITE DESCRIPTION The surveyed area occupies an area of approximately 300 ha and lies on
