Montgomery County Planning Board January 2001 The Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission is a bi-county agency created by the Ge~eralAssembly of Maryland in 1927. The Commission's geographic - authority covers most of Montgomery and Prince George's counties. The Commission's planning jurisdiction, the Maryland-Washington Regional District, comprises 1,001 square miles; its parks jurisdiction, the Metropolitan District, comprises 91 9 square miles. The Commission has three major functions: (1) The preparation, adoption, and, from time to time, amendment or exten- sion of The General Plan (On Wedges and Corridors) for the Physical Devel- opment of the Maryland-Washington Regional District within Montgomery and Prince George's Counties. (2) The acquisition, development, operation, and maintenance of a public park system (3) In Prince George's county only, the operation of the entire county public recreation program. The Commission operates in each County through a Planning Board appointed by and responsible to the County government. The Planning Boards are responsible for prepa- ration of all local master plans, recommendations on zoning amendments, administra- tion of subdivision regulations, and general administration of parks. 												  MDOT MTA Purple Line Celebrates Winners of Elementary School Art Contest First-Place Selections to Be Displayed on Banners Along 16-Mile Purple Line CorridorFOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE MEDIA CONTACTS: Gary Witherspoon Brittany Marshall Office: 240-825-4629 Office: 410-767-8367 Cell: 443-801-4318 Cell: 443-970-0424 [email protected] [email protected] MDOT MTA Purple Line Celebrates Winners of Elementary School Art Contest First-Place Selections to be Displayed on Banners Along 16-Mile Purple Line Corridor RIVERDALE, MD (January 21, 2020) – Students from four elementary schools who turned images of the Purple Line rail project into award-winning art will have their work reproduced on banners displayed at project sites near their schools, the Maryland Department of Transportation Maryland Transit Administration (MDOT MTA) announced. “There are many talented, young artists in Prince George’s and Montgomery counties, and it’s exciting to see the project through their eyes,” said Jeff Ensor, director of the $5.6 billion Purple Line project for MDOT MTA. “It was difficult to select the winners because of the quality of all the entries.” This past fall, third graders from seven elementary schools along the Purple Line’s 16-mile corridor were invited to participate in the art contest. Students were asked to draw either a colorful picture of themselves and their families on the light rail or what they saw during Purple Line construction. Four schools took part and produced 140 pieces of art. Purple Line staff reviewed and selected the first-place artwork, one from each of the schools: http://bit.ly/38og1Y0. Glenridge, Langley Park-McCormick, Riverdale and Woodlin elementary schools participated in the contest. Lesli Leath, a senior community liaison with the Purple Line project and contest organizer, said the winners were selected based on “originality, vibrancy and authenticity.” “Clearly, there’s real artistic talent in schools along the Purple Line corridor,” she said.

												  Washington, DCWashington, D.C. ROUTE A journey westward along the Great American Rail-Trail will begin at the steps of the U.S. Capitol in Washington, D.C. The trail will travel among some of the most iconic landmarks in the nation’s capital along the National Mall, including the Washington Monument and the Lincoln Memorial, where the trail heads north along the Rock Creek Park Trails. The route then picks up the Capital Crescent Trail in Georgetown, which flows into the towpath of the Chesapeake and Ohio (C&O) Canal National Historical Park stretching from Washington, D.C., to Cumberland, Maryland. RTC found and reviewed six plans in Washington, D.C., to better understand the district’s trail priorities. A full list of these plans can be found in Appendix A. COMMENTS Silver Spring B&O Railroad Station 1. Improve the proposed alignment around the B&O Station by: a. Reducing vehicular traffic crossing the trail and most importantly limiting vehicles backing up across the trail. b. Providing a raised trail crossing if vehicles are permitted to cross the trail. Warning signs and pavements markings, such as green thermoplastic, should also be provided.

												  History of MDOT MTA and the Lots SystemHistory of Transit Organization in the Baltimore Region Transit Agencies and Service Development in the Baltimore Region OVERVIEW The Baltimore Regional Transit Governance and Funding Study will develop alternatives for how the region could structure, organize, and fund regional transit services. The approach to developing these alternatives includes working with the Baltimore Regional Transit Board (BRTB) through an iterative process of research, analysis, and stakeholder input to ensure that the alternatives are grounded in experience, respectful of history and constraints, but creative enough to recognize opportunities. This technical memo, the first in the series, focuses on the history and development of transit services in the Baltimore Region.
