The aS cred and the Cannibalistic: Zhou Zuoren’s Critique of Violence in Modern China Abstract This article explores the ways in which Zhou Zuoren critiqued violence in modern China as a belief-‐‑driven phenomenon. Differing from Lu Xun and other mainstream intellectuals, Zhou consistently denied the legitimacy of violence as a force for modernizing China. Relying on extensive readings in anthropology, intellectual history, and religious studies, he investigated the fundamental “nexus” between violence and the religious, political, and ideological beliefs. In the Enlightenment’s effort to achieve modernity, cannibalistic Confucianism was to be cleansed from the corpus of Chinese culture as the “barbaric” cultural Other, but Zhou was convinced that such barbaric cannibalism was inherited by the Enlightenment thinkers, and thus made the Enlightenment impossible.

    A Note from Amy Alznauer “Some doubters in the future may question whether [the Zhou Brothers] ever really existed,” a New York Times journalist wrote. “They did. They do. They flourish.” The Zhou Brothers, who as children went by the names Shaoli and Shaoning, are indeed real, as real as you and me. They were born in the 1950s, during the early days of the People’s Republic of China, and came of age during the Cultural Revolution. In some ways they were unlucky. Their family owned a bookstore. And the government did not approve of private business. This led to all sorts of misery—their father taken just before Shaoning was born, their mother taken later, a sister sold away, poverty, hard labor, and a disgraced family name. But by the same token, they were also lucky. Their family owned a bookstore. And bookstores are amazing things, full of ideas and beauty. And this bookstore was special, for in it lived a grandmother who opened up the books and showed the little brothers the magnificent world within. So from the beginning the brothers learned the lesson that great legends teach: the very thing you love the most often brings the most trouble. This mix of love and trouble gave birth to a dream. The brothers would take their difficult life and find a way to transform it into something beautiful, a dream they realized by painting together on the same canvas. The story I tell here is the legendary bones of their lives that brought forth this new magic.

    www.china1980s.org INTERVIEW TRANSCRIPT SHEN KUIYI Interviewer: Jane DeBevoise, Phoebe Wong Date: 23 Jul 2007 Duration: about 1 hour Location: Asia Art Archive, Hong Kong Shen Kuiyi (SK): I had two roles at that time; I read a lot of books, but I was also an editor of books. During the Cultural Revolution, I went to the countryside. Then, in 1975, I went to Shanghai Normal University to study fine art. I graduated in 1978, and went on to work in the Shanghai Agricultural Exhibition Center as their curator for two years, and then in the 1980s, I changed jobs and worked at the Shanghai People’s Fine Arts Publishing House [上海人民美術出版社]. I was an editor, and at the beginning of my time there (around 1980) up until 1984, for four years, we worked on publishing Western art-related books. So, I am familiar with lots of books on this list because I focused a lot of time on Western art, and in college I studied oil painting. I also did some translations at that time, from English to Chinese, and from Japanese to Chinese. I decided to learn Japanese on my own, and went to evening school to learn Japanese as well. At the end of the 1970s in China, how people have access to these books I think is an interesting question to ask. I wrote a little section in the book about the Zhou Brothers, about 1978-79, and I wrote for their catalogue for an exhibition they had in Chicago. I talked a little bit about their upbringing,two Chinese because artists whothey noware originally live in Chicago.

Scott Hess grew up in a small Wisconsin town, graduating from the UW-Madison in 1977. He lived in Vienna in 1978 to 1984, attending the Academy of Fine Arts. In 1979 Hess had his first solo exhibition in Vienna, quickly followed by exhibitions in Austria, Germany and France. In 1984 Hess moved to his current home of Los Angeles. His work is included in public collections around the world, and he is a recipient of the WESTAF award, a J. Paul Getty Museum Fellowship, and a National Endowment for the Arts Visual Arts Fellowship. His massive six-year project, The Paternal Suit, opened in 2012 at the Halsey Institute in Charleston, SC, and travels to the Mobile Museum of Art (2013) and the Long Beach Museum of Art (2014). Hess is represented by Hirschl and Adler Modern in New York and Koplin Del Rio Gallery in Los Angeles.
