The Nomination of Michael Fallon As Bishop of London
CCHA, Historical Studies, 62 (1996), 33-46 The Nomination of Michael Fallon as Bishop of London Pasquale FIORINO At the turn of this century, the population of the nine counties that comprise the Catholic Diocese of London, Ontario had reached 500,038. Of these 11.24% professed the Catholic faith, 5.31% claimed French as their ethnic origin, and 21.49% were of Irish descent.1 Given the size of its ethnic population and the agrarian nature of its economy, the London Diocese did not seem to pose any threat to the social and religious peace of the Dominion, but it was soon to become a much debated topic among Catholics and Protes- tants. This upsurge in fame was the result of two events which occurred less than a month apart: the nomination of Michael Francis Fallon as Bishop of the Diocese in December 1909 and the French-Canadian Educational Congress held in Ottawa in January 1910. For the next two decades, Bishop Michael Fallon’s relationship with French-Canadians was a controversial issue in Canadian social and religious life. The investigation of the candidacy and the appointment of Michael Fallon as Bishop of London has been shrouded in mystery and unconfirmed rumours. The Roman hierarchy does not disclose information regarding its methods of investigation or its findings. However, this paper will present the fruits of my research at the Vatican Archives with respect to the nomination of Fallon to the episcopal see of London. On 25 June 1908, the Bishops of Toronto, Hamilton, Sault Ste. Marie, Kingston, Peterborough, and Alexandria met in Toronto to compile a list of three candidates – known as a terna – for the London See which had become vacant following the translation of Bishop Francis Patrick McEvay to the Archdiocese of Toronto. -

10 LA IGLESIA CUBANA Y LA REVOLUCIÓN DE INDEPENDENCIA (1868-1898) Juan Bosco Amores Carredano Introducción La historia de la Iglesia católica en Cuba, tanto en lo que se refiere a la época colonial como a la del siglo XX, ha merecido hasta ahora un escaso interés por parte de los historiadores.1 Para el siglo XIX contamos con más información. A través de las semblan- zas biográficas de algunas figuras de la Iglesia especialmente queridas para la historiografía cubana –como son Félix Varela (1788-1853) y el obispo de La Habana Juan José Díaz de Espada (1802-1832)–, podemos conocer algunos aspectos parciales de la actuación de la Iglesia en las primeras décadas del siglo XIX.2 Para las décadas centrales del siglo XIX destacan los trabajos de Reinerio Lebroc, con un claro matiz “nacionalista”,3 el mismo que se observa en los numerosos trabajos de Manuel Maza Miquel, S.I., sobre la Iglesia cubana finisecular, que se basan principalmente en la correspondencia de los obispos de Cuba con la Santa Sede.4 En este breve trabajo de síntesis pretendemos ofrecer un panorama de la situa- ción de la Iglesia en Cuba al acercarse la crisis que acabó con la dominación española. Al ser una institución estrechamente ligada al Estado y al “ser” español, la evolución de la Iglesia en la Cuba del XIX hay que entenderla en el contexto de la evolución política y social que finalizará con la independencia de la isla en 1898. La Iglesia durante la etapa de “azúcar e Ilustración” La época del primer gran boom azucarero en Cuba, entre 1790 y 1830, fue tam- bién la única en la que la Iglesia gozó de un relativo esplendor en la isla. -

Si prescindimos de las referencias obligadas en las obras genera- les2, los estudios específicos sobre la Iglesia en Cuba para los tres primeros siglos de presencia española en la isla son muy escasos; además, algunos adolecen de una excesiva carga ideológica que les resta valor científico3. Para el siglo XIX contamos con más información. CCHA, Historical Studies, 60 (1993-1994), 83-101 Roman Archives as a Source for the History of Canadian Ethnic Groups1 Matteo SANFILIPPO In the last ten years, several historians, in their analysis of the docu- ments relating to Canada in the archives of the Vatican, have frequentely dealt with the problem of ethnic relations in the Canadian Catholic Church. In particular, Luca Codignola sketched the ethnic and regional diversification of Canadian Catholicism before 1820.2 Roberto Perin placed the ethnic struggle in the center of his book on Rome and Victorian Canada.3 Both of them stressed the role of the Holy See in controling the evolution of ethnic relationships inside Canadian Catholicism. As a matter of fact, Codignola and Perin consider Rome the “third metropolis of Canada,” because, according to them, Rome strongly influenced the life of the Canadian Catholic Church, thus influencing the whole of Canadian society.4 This thesis has been backed, even if indirectly, by Lucien Lemieux.5 It is now familiar to Canadian scholars. The Intrigues of Bishop John T. Mcnally, 1930-1937

McNally, 1930-1937 Robert Nicholas BÉRARD Two major themes in the historiography of Canadian Catholicism have been the rivalry between French-Canadian and English-Canadian Catholics for ascendancy in the Church, and the struggle to define the relationship between Church and State in Canada.1 At the heart of many of the controver- sies that defined the national rivalry within the Canadian Church was Arch- bishop John T. McNally, and one aspect of the larger struggle for recognition and ultimately ascendancy in the Church for English-speaking Canadians was McNally’s attempt to secure the appointment of an English-Canadian Cardinal. John Thomas McNally was born in Hope River, Prince Edward Island on 24 June 1871, and later moved to the town of Summerside. Graduating first in his high school class in 1886, he was granted a teaching licence, but chose instead to take up a scholarship at Prince of Wales College in Charlottetown. Upon his college graduation, he went to the University of Ottawa, and completed his B.A. and Licentiate of Philosophy in 1892. At Ottawa McNally recognized his priestly vocation and was sent by that diocese to the Canadian College at Rome, where he took his doctoral degree in theology. After his ordination at Rome in 1896, McNally returned to Ottawa as a curate of St. Patrick’s Church. In 1900, ill health and suggestions that he seek a more moderate climate led to his transfer to the Diocese of Portland, Oregon, where he served as secretary to Archbishop Alexander Christie, formerly bishop of Vancouver Island. -

In 1862 he received the degree of baccalauréat ès arts from the Petit Séminaire de Québec, where he had been a student since 1857, and he was the first to be awarded the Prince of Wales Prize, instituted by the future monarch during his visit to North America two years earlier. Bégin enrolled in the Grand Séminaire de Québec in 1862, but after a year there, the superior, Elzéar-Alexandre Taschereau*, who was also rector of the Université Laval, sent him to Rome to study at the Roman College (Pontifical Gregorian University), along with the brothers Louis-Honoré and Benjamin* Pâquet.
