Lindy Chamberlain was convicted on 29 October 1982 of murdering her baby daughter, Azaria. Her conviction was overturned in 1988 after a Royal Commission into her trial. Two main explanations have been proposed for Chamberlain's wrongful conviction. The first explanation is that the scientific evidence adduced in support of the prosecution was seriously flawed. The second is that Chamberlain's right to a fair trial was prejudiced by the enormous media attention focused on the case.

From 1980 to 2012, he covered the high-profile case of the Northern Territory disappearance of baby Azaria Chamberlain. One of the most notorious criminal cases in Australia, Azaria’s disappearance came to focus upon her mother Lindy and father Michael. On January 12, Michael Chamberlain died due to issues related to leukaemia. Across three decades of covering the Chamberlain case, Malcolm Brown came to know Michael and he was asked to speak at a Memorial Service for him, held at the Avondale College Church in Cooranbong on the NSW central coast on Monday, January 16. He gave Eternity permission to publish what he shared: Michael, sadly, had died at Gosford on January 12, from a blood disorder which appears to have come on him quickly. I wrote the first news story and an obituary, but was surprised by the huge public response and what appeared to be a genuine outpouring of grief. Supporters came from everywhere, including John Bryson, whose book, Evil Angels, had made a significant contribution to changing public perceptions on the case; Norm Young, whose book, Innocence Regained, had told the story of the Chamberlains’ fight for justice; and Professor Ray Watterson, from Newcastle University, who had sponsored Michael in his academic career.

    Dingo Media? The persistence of the “trial by media” frame in popular, media and academic evaluations of the Azaria Chamberlain case Abstract In the bulk of popular, media and scholarly discourse on Azaria Chamberlain’s disappearance there is overwhelming consensus that the sensationalist reporting of the event convicted parents Michael and Lindy of their daughter’s murder outside official court processes. In feminist scholarship in particular, the infant’s disappearance in August 1980 has been read according to a “trial by media” frame. This frame persists despite altered perspectives about the role of the Australian public whose punitive and collectively hostile response to a “media-driven hysteria” has been replaced with the portrait of a kinder and more compassionate nation. The objectives of this article are three-fold: to demonstrate the persistence of the trial by media frame in popular, media and academic discourse; to consider assumptions of a monolithic and hostile media, and by examining a previously unanalysed archive to suggest that these arguments overlook the existence of sympathetic voices in mainstream media as well as the dialogic connection between media and counter publics mutually supporting the Chamberlains’ bid for innocence. This research offers an alternative view to scholarship on a landmark event in Australian history and has broader implications for the way we view the media in trial by media situations. 1 Keywords Media trials, trial by media, tabloid justice, Lindy Chamberlain, counter-publics Introduction Media interest in the circumstances of Azaria Chamberlain’s disappearance peaked again in November 2014 when a documentary on the case was broadcast on the New York Times “Retro Report” website.i The video, “Dingo’s Got My Baby: Trial by Media” was produced for American online audiences and marked almost thirty-five years since nine-and-a-half week-old Azaria Chamberlain disappeared from her family’s tent at the base of Ayers Rock (now known as Uluru) in the heart of central Australia on August 17, 1980.

It seems everyone had an opinion in the matter. It began Sunday August 17, 1980, when the Chamberlain family, Michael and Lindy, with their two sons and infant daughter, were camped at the popular tourist attraction, Ayers Rock, in the Northern Territory of Australia. Just after putting the two younger children to bed there was a baby cry. Lindy went to investigate. She screamed, “A dingo took my baby.” Thus began six years of inquiry, trial, trial in the media, and rampant speculation and innuendo about what really happened. The Northern Territory government eventually charged Michael and Lindy Chamberlain with murdering their baby, Azaria, as some type of sacrifice in the desert. Lindy was charged with murder and Michael as an accomplice in the crime. There was no body or murder weapon or even a good motive presented, but there were a lot of circumstantial evidence. The main evidence, which led to Lindy’s conviction, was forensic. Blood samples in the tent, in the car, and other places were identified as fetal blood. Cut marks on clothing were described as made by scissors. Lindy was convicted of murder and sent to jail for life. Michael was convicted as an accomplice but given a suspended sentence. Through the various initial inquests and the subsequent murder trial, the Australian media, print and television, had a field day.

Please note that I faxed the form registering my intention to make a submission the next day on Wednesday 7th April. My submission of SIXTY typed pages I will be submitting before 12th May 1999 - the due date for submissions for the May-June public hearings. The first sixteen-pages will also be faxed through. I will be sending hard copy of these SIXTY typed pages along with the transmission report for today's 16-page fax containing the first sixteen pages of my submission and also 23-pages containing copy of a selection of reference letters that I've received from thirty-three previous inquiries over past 13-years. I will also be sending an ELECTRONIC COPY of my submission on a 3.5 inch diskette. These will be sent in TWO PARCELS same day at the one time - Registered & Express Post - with each parcel containing both the hard copy and a diskette to eliminate error in receipt. After that I may add additional material in similar method as above shortly after due date for submissions on 12th May as I have found the one-month given far too short.

Chamberlain Legal Case and the Seventh- day Adventist Church, South Pacific Division STUART TIPPLE Stuart Tipple, L.L.B. (Canterbury University) practices as an attorney and Celebrity Speaker. Tipple is a New Zealander living in Australia. He has served the church on numerous committees and boards. During his career he has received awards for his pro bono work, named the London Times Lawyer of the Week, won the Young Lawyers essay prize and the Law Society’s Presidents Medal. He is married to Cherie with two adult children and two grandchildren. Seventh-day Adventist pastor Michael Chamberlain and his wife Lindy suffered one of the most notorious cases of miscarriage of justice in Australian legal history. They lost their baby daughter Azaria to a dingo at Uluru, Norther Territory in August 1980. On June 11, 1980, Michael and Lindy Chamberlain were delighted when Azaria, their first daughter was born joining her brothers Aidan aged 6 years and Reagan aged 4 years.1 Michael was 36 and the Pastor of the Seventh-day Adventist (SDA) church in Mt Isa, a small mining town in the northwest of Queensland, Australia. Lindy was 32, a supportive minister’s wife and full-time mother. Nine-and-a-half weeks after Azaria was born, the family traveled for two days by car to Uluru (then known as Ayers Rock), a red monolith situated southwest of Alice Springs in the desert of central Australia. They were excited and anticipated being able to photograph the rock and witness its spectacular sunrises and sunsets.
