Lindy Chamberlain A Personal Visual Response A written submission in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the award of the degree of Doctor of Creative Arts from the University of Wollongong Diploma of Art Education Diploma of Teaching (Secondary Art) Bachelor of Arts (Art Ed) Graduate Diploma in Art Studies Faculty of Creative Arts August 2002 Abstract This is an artistic response to Mrs Lindy Chamberlain and the drama that engulfed almost a decade of her life. That drama began with the loss of her baby Azaria to a dingo while on a family camping holiday at Uluru in Central Australia in 1980. Two years later she was wrongly convicted of the baby’s murder, and spent the next three-and-a-half years in gaol. Upon her release, she continued to fight to clear her name. Her conviction was finally quashed in 1989. The Chamberlain drama was part of the almost daily news diet of Australians for some years, and still provokes strong reactions in many today. It was a story with powerful ingredients: the disappearance in the night of a helpless baby, into a remote desert landscape of ancient mythological significance; a contest for credibility between a defiant accused mother and a little understood native species of wild dog; forensic experts evoking horrific images of the baby’s last moments, using only her bloodied clothing but without her body; a co-accused husband and wife who were active members of a minority religious group that was noticeably different to mainstream Australian church denominations; and so on. The paintings discussed here explore the story’s many ongoing resonances and re-engage their viewers with it in new and positive ways. The thesis comprises 36 works, most of which are acrylic on board or canvas. It includes ten portraits of the predominant personalities in the case, a number of pseudo-portraits (i.e. several reworked media-derived pictures of Lindy Chamberlain and four depictions of the ‘Dingo Spirit’), and approximately fifteen other related paintings. This documentation explores what influenced - 2 - these works, including: the facts of the decade-long story; the implications of these facts; the artistic considerations involved, both technical and aesthetic; and some of the artworks, artistic traditions and critical theories about art that influenced the works’ design and execution or might subsequently shed light on their interpretation – especially the portraiture traditions of Europe and Australia, from the Renaissance to today. This paper also provides: background material for each painting, a brief work- by-work analysis of them, and a short history of their creation and exhibition. The significance of this body of work is that it contributes to both the Chamberlain story itself and to the development of the role that art and artists play in Australian cultural life. In particular, it demonstrates a compelling social role for portraiture in Australia today. By depicting as a series the major characters and several key moments of an important historical episode, insights can be communicated, responses evoked, and positive social discourse furthered. The project and its accompanying paper should be understood to insist that no single theory about art or our relationship with it can really render an artistic practice invalid. Rather, critical ideas from both past and present can and should be drawn upon simultaneously to assist in making meaning.     Submission on The Australian Broadcasting Corporation's commitment to reflecting and representing regional diversity Dear Sir/ Madam, I welcome this opportunity to comment on The Australian Broadcasting Corporation's commitment to reflecting and representing regional diversity within the terms of reference as set out by the Environment and Communications References Committee. Regional diversity and national identity will be diminished with the loss of the ABC Tasmanian Production Unit. Programs of high quality reflecting and representing regional diversity have been produced in Tasmania and include Auction Room, the extremely popular “Collectors” and “Gardening Australia” when it was hosted by Peter Cundall. These Tasmanian programs enabled national viewers to enjoy and appreciate the state’s distinctive heritage and culture. The Tasmanian bushfires were best reported by local journalists who have a personal understanding of the state; its people and conditions. The decision to cut ABC production in Hobart has met with opposition from 12 Federal Senators and the Premier, Lara Giddings who is unable to match funding from the State budget for Screen Tasmania to offset ABC cuts as requested by the ABC’s Managing Director (ABC, 2012)1. Similarly, Western Australia also has limited ABC production with the cessation of “Can We Help?” enjoyed by viewers over six years. The decline, according to Cassellas (2012), has been evident since 1985 when WA had a low but reasonable 7.8 per cent of ABC’s staff compared with just 5.4 per cent in 20122. Now the WA studio is mainly unused or hired out to companies like Screen West. By comparison, NSW had 49.2 per cent of the ABC’s staff last year.

    1 Picturing a Golden Age: September and Australian Rules Pauline Marsh, University of Tasmania Abstract: In two Australian coming-of-age feature films, Australian Rules and September, the central young characters hold idyllic notions about friendship and equality that prove to be the keys to transformative on- screen behaviours. Intimate intersubjectivity, deployed in the close relationships between the indigenous and nonindigenous protagonists, generates multiple questions about the value of normalised adult interculturalism. I suggest that the most pointed significance of these films lies in the compromises that the young adults make. As they reach the inevitable moral crisis that awaits them on the cusp of adulthood, despite pressures to abandon their childhood friendships they instead sustain their utopian (golden) visions of the future. It is 1968, rural Western Australia. As we glide along an undulating bitumen road up ahead we see, from a low camera angle, a school bus moving smoothly along the same route. Periodically a smattering of roadside trees filters the sunlight, but for the most part open fields of wheat flank the roadsides and stretch out to the horizon, presenting a grand and golden vista. As we reach the bus, music that has hitherto been a quiet accompaniment swells and in the next moment we are inside the vehicle with a fair-haired teenager. The handsome lad, dressed in a yellow school uniform, is drawing a picture of a boxer in a sketchpad. Another cut takes us back outside again, to an equally magnificent view from the front of the bus. This mesmerising piece of cinema—the opening of September (Peter Carstairs, 2007)— affords a viewer an experience of tranquillity and promise, and is homage to the notion of a golden age of youth.

    making up stories of me stories of love Love is Paul Kelly’s major subject matter and he writes about it in numerous ways. In the tradition of the bard or balladeer, Kelly tells musical stories about love – first love, love of partner, love of family, love of country, love of God, love gone bad, love filled with regret, love that starts all over again. ‘I think it is the love songs that define him,’ says writer David Leser, interviewed in the documentary. ‘He is the romantic poet in song.’ The pop charts are always filled with love songs, but Paul Kelly’s love songs, while attracting chart success in the 1980s, have never been disposable pop songs. Kelly’s love songs have had, like Keats – who Kelly quotes in the film – a depth and complexity that belie their apparent simplicity. An anthem like ‘To Her Door’ talks about break-up and reconciliation in stark and unsentimental terms; ‘Before Too Long’ addresses how a potential ‘suitor’ views the relationship of the woman he wants to be with; ‘When I First Met Your Ma’ speaks both poetically and directly about Kelly meeting his first wife Hilary; ‘I Can’t Believe We Were Married’ looks at that former marriage from the distance that time offers; and ‘Love is the Law’ is a paraphrase of 1 Corinthians 13, the famous biblical verse often used at weddings: ‘If I speak in the tongues of men or of angels, but do not have love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal.’ Both his former wives are interviewed in the film, and they suggest that Kelly’s desire to dig into what he sees as the fullness of love was difficult at times for them to handle.
