A CONTRASTIVE STUDY OF THE IBIBIO AND IGBO SOUND SYSTEMS GOD’SPOWER ETIM Department Of Languages And Communication Abia State Polytechnic P.M.B. 7166, Aba, Abia State, Nigeria. [email protected] ABSTRACT This research strives to contrast the consonant phonemes, vowel phonemes and tones of Ibibio and Igbo in order to describe their similarities and differences. The researcher adopted the descriptive method, and relevant data on the phonology of the two languages were gathered and analyzed within the framework of CA before making predictions and conclusions. Ibibio consists of ten vowels and fourteen consonant phonemes, while Igbo is made up of eight vowels and twenty-eight consonants. The results of contrastive analysis of the two languages showed that there are similarities as well as differences in the sound systems of the languages. There are some sounds in Ibibio which are not present in Igbo. Also many sounds are in Igbo which do not exist in Ibibio. Both languages share the phonemes /e, a, i, o, ɔ, u, p, b, t, d, k, kp, m, n, ɲ, j, ŋ, f, s, j, w/. All the phonemes in Ibibio are present in Igbo except /ɨ/, /ʉ/, and /ʌ/. Igbo has two vowel segments /ɪ/ and /ʊ/ and also fourteen consonant phonemes /g, gb, kw, gw, ŋw, v, z, ʃ, h, ɣ, ʧ, ʤ, l, r/ which Ibibio lacks. Both languages have high, low and downstepped tones but Ibibio further has contour or gliding tones which are not tone types in Igbo. Also, the downstepped tone in Ibibio is conventionally marked with exclamation point, while in Igbo, it is conventionally marked with a raised macron over the segments bearing it. -

On the Economic Origins of Constraints on Women’s Sexuality Anke Becker* November 5, 2018 Abstract This paper studies the economic origins of customs aimed at constraining female sexuality, such as a particularly invasive form of female genital cutting, restrictions on women’s mobility, and norms about female sexual behavior. The analysis tests the anthropological theory that a particular form of pre-industrial economic pro- duction – subsisting on pastoralism – favored the adoption of such customs. Pas- toralism was characterized by heightened paternity uncertainty due to frequent and often extended periods of male absence from the settlement, implying larger payoffs to imposing constraints on women’s sexuality. Using within-country vari- ation across 500,000 women in 34 countries, the paper shows that women from historically more pastoral societies (i) are significantly more likely to have under- gone infibulation, the most invasive form of female genital cutting; (ii) are more restricted in their mobility, and hold more tolerant views towards domestic vio- lence as a sanctioning device for ignoring such constraints; and (iii) adhere to more restrictive norms about virginity and promiscuity. Instrumental variable es- timations that make use of the ecological determinants of pastoralism support a causal interpretation of the results. The paper further shows that the mechanism behind these patterns is indeed male absenteeism, rather than male dominance per se. The International Journal - Language Society and Culture URL: www.educ.utas.edu.au/users/tle/JOURNAL/ ISSN 1327-774X Symbols of Communication: The Case of Àdìǹkrá and Other Symbols of Akan Charles Marfo, Kwame Opoku-Agyeman and Joseph Nsiah Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, Ghana Abstract The Akan people of Ghana have a number of coined symbols that express various forms of infor- mation based on socio-cultural knowledge. These symbols of expression are collectively called àdìǹkrá. There are related symbols of oral orientation that seem to play the same role as àdìǹkrá. In this paper, we explore the àdìǹkrá symbols and the related ones, the individual messages they en- code and their significance in the Akan society. It is explained that most of these symbols are inspired on creation and man-made objects. Some others are also proverb-based. The àdìǹkrá symbols in par- ticular constitute a medium of objective and deep-seated socio-cultural knowledge of the Akan people. We contend that, like words and actions, the symbols represent and send various distinctive messag- es that are indisputably accepted by people who know them. The use of àdìǹkrá and the related sym- bols in modern textiles, language and literature are also discussed. Keywords: Adinkra, Akan, Communication, Culture, Symbols of expression. Introduction A symbol could be defined as a creation that represents a message, a thought, proverb etc. When a set of symbols is attributed to a particular group of people belonging to a particular culture, these symbols become a window to the understanding of aspects of their culture. -

Definition of a Language The preparation of a listing of Nigerian languages inevitably begs the question of the definition of a language. The terms 'language' and 'dialect' have rather different meanings in informal speech from the more rigorous definitions that must be attempted by linguists. Dialect, in particular, is a somewhat pejorative term suggesting it is merely a local variant of a 'central' language. In linguistic terms, however, dialect is merely a regional, social or occupational variant of another speech-form. There is no presupposition about its importance or otherwise. Because of these problems, the more neutral term 'lect' is coming into increasing use to describe any type of distinctive speech-form. However, the Index inevitably must have head entries and this involves selecting some terms from the thousands of names recorded and using them to cover a particular linguistic nucleus. In general, the choice of a particular lect name as a head-entry should ideally be made solely on linguistic grounds. -

Before the advent of colonial rule and Western Civilization per se, the Igbo had existed with full civilization. It is a familiar expression that language is found in culture and culture is found in language, and it is these distinct cultural and linguistic features that distinguish the Igbo as one of the progenitors of African civilization. The origin and evolution of the Igbo language and culture over the generations can be problematic if it does not take cognizance of the periodization from the age of oralness to the period the language was reduced into writing. The material for this study involves both primary and secondary sources. Studies have shown that an in-depth study of the origin and evolution of languages and culture over the generations could go a long way to ameliorate the unfair treatment given to most of the endangered languages of the world. This study engages itself with the task of making an inroad in the terrain of historical linguistics, since the study of the origin and evolution of language and culture could bring enough confirmations that remote ancestors of the Igbo were among the autochthonous peoples that fathered the civilization of Africa. -

The next four chapters deal with general problems, such as the future of writing and the relationship of writing to speech, art, and religion. Of the two final chapters, one contains the first attempt to establish a full terminology of writing, the other an extensive bibliography. The aim of this study is to lay a foundation for a new science of writing which might be called grammatology. The scenario: Philip Chukwurah Emeagwali “discovers” that black Americans no longer speak their native African languages. The First Africans in America Transcribed and edited from a lecture delivered by Philip Chukwurah Emeagwali. The unedited video is posted at emeagwali.com. I did not know that the first Africans arrived in Jamestown, Virginia, in 1614. I thought Nnamdi Azikiwe, my hometown hero, was one of the first (Zik nwa jelu obodo oyibo). He was in Storer College, Virginia, in the 1920s, 50 years before my arrival in the United States. Three hundred and sixty years (360) earlier, Africans arrived in the United States, via Portugal. Africans arrived in Portugal, as slaves, 170 years before their arrival in the United States. Lagos is a Portuguese word. Madam Tinubu (of Tinubu Square, Lagos) was a wealthy 19th century slave-trader. Pidgin-English was invented to trade with Portuguese. My first awareness of black America came in 1968 from reading the classic “Up From Slavery “ by Booker T. Washington. I read it as a 13-year-old refugee living in a refugee camp located at Saint Joseph’s Primary School, Awka-Etiti, Biafra. This paper attempts an investigation of the structure of this figurative language arising from the basis that they are constituents beyond the word. It relies on the Continuity Constraint framework proposed by William O‟Grady in 1998 to explain the relationship that exists among the lexical components of idioms such that they must of a necessity occur with one another to convey the meaning they do, otherwise, the meaning changes. Data were gathered from the interactions of Ibibio speakers who reside in large numbers in Calabar, Cross River State. They were extracted by the researchers‟ native speaker knowledge of the language. It is discovered that sentence idioms which are interrogatives, declaratives and imperatives occur in Ibibio. Compound idioms are also a reality in the language as well as Noun Phrase Idioms. It has also been seen that by virtue of usage, infinitive phrase and Negative constructions exist as idioms in the language. Anaang is a developing language spoken by the Anaang people in Akwa Ibom State of Nigeria. Genetically, Anaang is a Lower Cross Language of the Benue-Congo sub-family of the Niger-Congo Language Phylum. The objectives of the study are to investigate the articulatory features of Anaang and how palatalisation is formed in the language. The population is made of sixteen informants, two from each of the eight local government areas in Anaang speaking areas. Collection of data is based on interviews, participant observation and personal interaction with the informants. In achieving this, fifty items were used from SIL Comparative African Wordlists. Interviews were both formally and informally recorded in a digital midget. Formally, the recordings were done on the knowledge of the informants who were asked to pronounce words in Anaang. Informally, data were recorded unknowingly to the informants in social gatherings. Articulatory Model by Browman & Goldstein (1990) is adopted as the theoretical frame for the analysis. The theory recognizes gestures as abstract, discreet and dynamically defined units which are invariant, but overlap in time due to their internal spatio-temporal organisation.
