Increased access to previously remote tropical for- est following logging and changes in land-use facilitates hunting of elusive wild cattle in Borneo, which preferentially select secluded habitat. We collated the first population parameters for the Endangered Bornean banteng Bos javanicus lowi and developed population models to simulate the effect of different hunting offtake rates on survival and the recovery of the population using reintroduced captive-bred individuals. Our findings suggest that the banteng population in Sabah is geographically divided into 4 management units based on connectivity: the Northeast, Sipitang (West), Central and Southeast, which all require active management to prevent further population decline and local extinction. -

Ambu4 and Benoit Goossens1,2,4,5* Abstract Background: The Bornean banteng (Bos javanicus lowi) is an endangered subspecies that often inhabits logged forest; however very little is known about the effects of logging on their ecology, despite the differing effects this has on other ungulate species. A body condition scoring system was created for the Bornean banteng using camera trap photographs from five forests in Sabah, Malaysia, with various past and present management combinations to establish if banteng nutrition suffered as a result of forest disturbance. Results: One hundred and eleven individuals were photographed over 38,009 camera trap nights from April 2011 to June 2014 in five forests. Banteng within forests that had a recent history of reduced-impact logging had higher body condition scores than banteng within conventionally logged forest. Conversely, when past logging was conducted using a conventional technique and the period of forest regeneration was relatively long; the banteng had higher body condition scores. Conclusion: The body condition scoring system is appropriate for monitoring the long-term nutrition of the Bornean banteng and for evaluating the extent of the impact caused by present-day reduced-impact logging methods. Reduced-impact logging techniques give rise to individuals with the higher body condition scores in the shorter term, which then decline over time. -

This report details the project's preliminary findings and presents a synthesis of the current knowledge regarding the five species of Bornean wild cat, with a particular focus on Sabah populations. The report provides a basic framework for the future development of a wild cat action plan for Sabah. A unique guild of five wild cat species (Sunda clouded leopard, marbled cat, bay cat, flat-headed cat, and leopard cat) inhabit the rainforests of Borneo. Two are considered by the IUCN as Endangered (Bay Cat and Flat Headed Cat), two as Vulnerable (Marbled cat and Sunda Clouded Leopard), yet they remain some of the world's least known wild cats. The Malaysian state of Sabah, in the north of Borneo, holds globally important populations of all four of these threatened felids. Thought to be forest dependant, the presumed primary habitat of Borneo's wild felids is rapidly being lost and/or altered in the region. -

Jeremiah) ii PREFACE At the 1992 United Nations Conference on Environment and Development or the Rio Summit, Malaysia was among the signatories to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD). The Convention outlines three main objectives: (1) the conservation of biological diversity; (2) the sustainable use of the components of biological diversity, and (3) the fair and equitable sharing of the benefits arising from the utilization of genetic resources. In 2010, in view of the continued decline of global biodiversity, parties to the CBD, in Nagoya, Japan, adopted the Strategic Plan for Biodiversity 2011-2020 with the purpose of inspiring broad-based action in support of biodiversity over the next decade by all countries and stakeholders. The Strategic Plan has 20 headline targets termed the “Aichi Biodiversity Targets”, organised under five strategic goals that address the underlying causes of biodiversity loss, reduce the pressures on biodiversity, safeguard biodiversity at all levels, enhance the benefits provided by biodiversity, and provide for capacity-building. -

Borneo is home to approximately 200 mammals, of which 44 are endemic, and can be found only in the Bornean rainforests. On this 11- day tour, we will be based along the Kinabatangan River and nearby reserves, where all 10 of Sabah’s primate species can be found. Wild Bornean Orangutans, plus Maroon, Silvered and Hose’s Langurs, Bornean Gibbons, Pig-tailed and Long-tailed Macaques, and the peculiar Proboscis Monkey are all highlights of this region. We will begin our tour in Sepilok, where we will visit the Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre, and the Sun Bear Conservation Centre to learn about the ongoing efforts to protect these iconic species. -

Royal Belum The pristine Royal Belum is nestled within the protected Belum Valley in Gerik. New species of trees and insects have been discovered in this 117,500-hectare virgin rainforest, which is also one of the few places in Malaysia where you can see the rare Rafflesia. Comprising a complex ecosystem, this state park is situated in the northern part of Lake Temengor and is a haven for mammals like the seladang, Asian Elephant, Malaysian Tiger and the endangered Sumatran Rhinoceros as well as birds such as the hornbills. Must do: Go for jungle trekking, bird watching and wildlife sightings Semenggoh Nature Reserve Situated in the Semenggoh Nature Reserve, this centre was established to rehabilitate orang utans that were injured, orphaned or kept illegally. The Centre has been a resounding success, caring for almost 1,000 endangered mammals, birds and reptiles from dozens of different species. However it is the orang utan rehabilitation programme that has made the Centre famous. In one respect, Semenggoh has been too successful – so many orang utan have been successfully reintroduced into the surrounding forest reserve that the forest’s carrying capacity has been reached, and rehabilitation activities have been transferred to the Matang Wildlife Centre, part of Kubah National Park. Semenggoh’s role has changed and it is nowadays a centre for the study of orang utan biology and behaviour, as well as a safe and natural haven for dozens of semi-wild orang utan, graduates of the rehabilitation programme. It is also home to numerous baby orang utan, born in the wild to rehabilitated mothers, a further testament to the success of the programme. -

Carnivore Conservation Planning on Borneo: Identifying Key Carnivore Landscapes, Research Priorities and Conservation Interventions

Borneo harbours more endemic carnivores than does any other island in the world except Madagascar, and almost half of the Bornean carnivore species have been classifed by The IUCN Red List of Threatened Species as globally threatened. Here, a systematic conservation planning framework highlighted key carnivore landscapes, conservation research and intervention priorities, and gaps in current knowledge of Bornean carnivore ecology. All single-species predictive habitat suitability index (HSI) models presented in this issue (20 species, comprising all carnivores on Borneo except otters [Lutrinae] and sun bear Helarctos malayanus) were standardised by converting HSI values into binary maps, and combined to derive species richness maps to discuss and delineate areas of conservation priority. The highest predicted carnivore species richness (defned here as the sum of the binary threshold maps), corresponds to interior lowland, upland and lower montane forest, whereas areas with lowest predicted species richness correspond to coastal lowlands already largely converted to oil palm plantations. The 12 proposed areas of conservation importance for carnivores focus on large landscapes and connectivity between subunits, many centred around the tri-national Heart of Borneo initiative, with additional areas for wetland/lowland species. -

Borneo Rhino Sanctuary (BRS) programme (restricted distribution) Quarterly report : covering the period September – November 2011 Programme objective To prevent the extinction of the Sumatran rhinoceros in Sabah by protecting wild rhinos and by bringing rhinos together in managed breeding facilities at Tabin Wildlife Reserve (TWR) Main participating agencies Sabah Wildlife Department (SWD), Borneo Rhino Alliance (BORA), Universiti Malaysia Sabah, Sabah Forestry Department, WWF-Malaysia, Leibniz Institute for Zoo and Wildlife Research (IZW; Berlin), Zoo Leipzig. Programme description (following May 2009 Sabah State Cabinet decision) - protection and monitoring of wild rhinos in TWR (BORA-SWD) and Danum Valley Conservation Area (WWF-Malaysia), the only two areas where potentially viable wild populations exist. - establishing Borneo Rhinoceros Sanctuary (BRS) breeding facilities (a managed, fenced area) inside TWR. - bringing isolated remnant rhinos from non-viable situations, into BRS. - establishing a sustainable financing scheme to allow long-term operations of BRS. - appointing a professional company to manage BRS and its rhinos Activities and progress Monitoring and security of wild rhinos Due to 100% prioritization of capture of Puntung, no patrols were done elsewhere around TWR during this quarter. It is understood that regular monitoring of rhinos at Danum Valley has ceased, and that rhino monitoring by WWF- Malaysia is now part of a more general programme of patrolling in eastern Sabah. 1 Rhino rescue Traps 1 to 4 were built on sites where Puntung very rarely visits and not on her known routes. The criterion for choosing these sites was proximity to a large river, rather than the probability of capturing the rhino.
