Washington Natural Heritage Program List of Animal Species with Ranks October 2017 The following list of animals known from Washington is complete for resident and transient vertebrates and several groups of invertebrates, including odonates, branchipods, tiger beetles, butterflies, gastropods, freshwater bivalves and bumble bees. Some species from other groups are included, especially where there are conservation concerns. Among these are the Palouse giant earthworm, a few moths and some of our mayflies and grasshoppers. Currently 857 vertebrate and 1,100 invertebrate taxa are included. Conservation status, in the form of range-wide, national and state ranks are assigned to each taxon. Information on species range and distribution, number of individuals, population trends and threats is collected into a ranking form, analyzed, and used to assign ranks. Ranks are updated periodically, as new information is collected. We welcome new information for any species on our list. APPENDIX A: COMMON AND SCIENTIFIC NAMES FOR FISH AND WILDLIFE SPECIES FOUND IN IDAHO. How to Read the Lists. Within these lists, species are listed phylogenetically by class. In cases where phylogeny is incompletely understood, taxonomic units are arranged alphabetically. Listed below are definitions for interpreting NatureServe conservation status ranks (GRanks and SRanks). These ranks reflect an assessment of the condition of the species rangewide (GRank) and statewide (SRank). Rangewide ranks are assigned by NatureServe and statewide ranks are assigned by the Idaho Conservation Data Center. GX or SX Presumed extinct or extirpated: not located despite intensive searches and virtually no likelihood of rediscovery. GH or SH Possibly extinct or extirpated (historical): historically occurred, but may be rediscovered. Its presence may not have been verified in the past 20–40 years. A species could become SH without such a 20–40 year delay if the only known occurrences in the state were destroyed or if it had been extensively and unsuccessfully looked for. The SH rank is reserved for species for which some effort has been made to relocate occurrences, rather than simply using this status for all elements not known from verified extant occurrences. G1 or S1 Critically imperiled: at high risk because of extreme rarity (often 5 or fewer occurrences), rapidly declining numbers, or other factors that make it particularly vulnerable to rangewide extinction or extirpation. G2 or S2 Imperiled: at risk because of restricted range, few populations (often 20 or fewer), rapidly declining numbers, or other factors that make it vulnerable to rangewide extinction or extirpation. G3 or S3 Vulnerable: at moderate risk because of restricted range, relatively few populations (often 80 or fewer), recent and widespread declines, or other factors that make it vulnerable to rangewide extinction or extirpation. -

The soil was dry the previous fall and very little snow fell over the winter. Spring melt occurred with no runoff so vernal ponds were empty and water levels in dugouts and dams were low. At a period with so much concern about climate change, one could not help but wonder if this drought presaged future dry conditions. At any rate, it is never a bad idea to try to improve water security. The dry soil meant that heavy equipment could operate without doing too much damage. MONTANA NATURAL HERITAGE PROGRAM Animal Species of Concern Species List Last Updated 08/05/2010 219 Species of Concern 86 Potential Species of Concern All Records (no filtering) A program of the University of Montana and Natural Resource Information Systems, Montana State Library Introduction The Montana Natural Heritage Program (MTNHP) serves as the state's information source for animals, plants, and plant communities with a focus on species and communities that are rare, threatened, and/or have declining trends and as a result are at risk or potentially at risk of extirpation in Montana. This report on Montana Animal Species of Concern is produced jointly by the Montana Natural Heritage Program (MTNHP) and Montana Department of Fish, Wildlife, and Parks (MFWP). Montana Animal Species of Concern are native Montana animals that are considered to be "at risk" due to declining population trends, threats to their habitats, and/or restricted distribution. Also included in this report are Potential Animal Species of Concern -- animals for which current, often limited, information suggests potential vulnerability or for which additional data are needed before an accurate status assessment can be made. Over the last 200 years, 5 species with historic breeding ranges in Montana have been extirpated from the state; Woodland Caribou (Rangifer tarandus), Greater Prairie-Chicken (Tympanuchus cupido), Passenger Pigeon (Ectopistes migratorius), Pilose Crayfish (Pacifastacus gambelii), and Rocky Mountain Locust (Melanoplus spretus). Designation as a Montana Animal Species of Concern or Potential Animal Species of Concern is not a statutory or regulatory classification. Instead, these designations provide a basis for resource managers and decision-makers to make proactive decisions regarding species conservation and data collection priorities in order to avoid additional extirpations. -
A Synopsis of the Neotropical Species of 'Aeshna

A synopsis of the Neotropical species of ‘Aeshna’ Fabricius: The Genus Rhionaeschna Förster (Odonata: Aeshnidae). – Tijdschrift voor Entomologie 146: 67- 207, figs. 1-468, tabs. 1-3. [ISSN 0040-7496]. Published 1 June 2003. This study includes a revisionary, phylogenetic and biogeographical analysis of Neotropical com- ponents of Aeshna Fabricius characterized by a midventral tubercle on abdominal sternum I. Phylogenetic relationships of the Neotropical species of Aeshna were inferred based on 39 adult characters. Ingroup taxa included 68 out of the 85 species currently assigned to Aeshna, and two species each of Andaeshna De Marmels and Anaciaeschna Selys. Oreaeschna dictatrix Lieftinck was chosen as outgroup. The strict consensus tree obtained after successive weighting revealed that Aeshna is not monophyletic; some of its species are more closely related to Anaciaeschna or Andaeschna. The name Aeshna should consequently be restricted to the Holarctic group includ- ing the type species Aeshna grandis Fabricius. In the present synopsis the generic name Rhion- aeschna Förster is assigned to the New World group characterized by the presence of a conical tu- bercle on abdominal sternum I, comprising 39 species formerly assigned to Aeshna. The synopsis includes keys to adults of both sexes, diagnoses, biological notes, distribution maps and more than 400 diagnostic illustrations. Rhionaeschna demarmelsi sp. n. is described, R. maita Förster is considered a junior synonym of R. brevifrons (Hagen), R. peralta (Ris) is considered a valid species, not a synonym of R. -

Dragons and Damsels What are they really? Curator Emeritus of Entomology, Dr Rob Cannings The insect order Odonata (Greek for toothed jaws) contains the insects known in English as dragonflies. Two main groups live in BC. True dragonflies have hindwings broader than the forewings. When perched they hold their wings out away from the body. Damselflies are slimmer, often smaller and usually fly more slowly than dragonflies. At rest they usually hold their equal-sized wings together above the body. Fossils of dragonfly ancestors are 300 to 350 million years old. Although they still have many primitive features, dragonflies are wonderfully adapted for their successful life as predators in the air. But, a dragonfly leads a double life – the immature stage, the larva, lives in water, camouflaged and mostly hidden. At this stage, before they can fly, its larva is an eager eater of small aquatic life. When it is time to mature, the larva emerges from the water and transforms into a flying adult. For thousands of years, dragonflies have caused superstitious fear in many people, even though they do not sting or bite humans. Maybe their boldness takes us aback, or their speed startles us. If you’ve never seen one, their strange appearance up close may seem fearsome. The English name dragonfly echoes the feelings these insects sometimes cause – they are the fanciful “devil’s darning needles” that sting venomously or sew up the lips. -
