A couple of weeks ago we made a limited alpha release to Vortex of up to 1000 users, many of whom were extremely helpful in posting bugs and feedback for us to work on. As a result of this feedback, Tannin has released four new updated versions of Vortex since its initial release two weeks ago. These included fixes for a number of bugs and some functionality updates. I want to thank those of you who used the software extensively and posted bugs through the feedback system in Vortex as we requested. Your help has been extremely helpful to us in this process. Now we are ready to open Vortex Alpha to anyone who wants to give it a go. Before you jump into your head first, I implore you to fully understand what Alpha means, what state Vortex is in, and whether Vortex is currently suitable for you. What is Alpha software? To save you from searching Here is the first result to describe Alpha software: It is important that we adequately warn you about the state of Vortex (as we, we, Now!) because if you're running to forums or elsewhere to complain about Vortex breaking your fashion set, and you haven't made any backups of your save files or game states, knowing well what we're telling you right here and now, we honestly won't have much sympathy. No. We don't recommend anyone completely switch to Vortex from their current fashion management tools. We think he'll be getting there in the not too distant future, but it's not there yet. We keep the NMM set button in the top navigator, and the only place where you are going to be able to download Vortex from our own The Nexus Mods game, which will also hopefully include extensions for Vortex moving forward. It's not all singing and tooting the release of Vortex to the masses where we tell everyone that it's the best thing sliced bread, and that everyone should switch. It's still we release quietly, telling you that we are happy with the direction it is moving, but we know that it still needs more time in the oven. What type of people are you looking for during Alpha? We really want people to try Vortex, and we're very grateful for any help you can give in error reports and functionality feedback. What we are looking for right now are people who are competent in moding their games who understand the risks of using this Alpha software and are willing to be patient with bugs and possible missing functionality to help us develop something really good. How long will Alpha last? We know that NMM was in constant beta condition and it wasn't ideal for everyone. We want to avoid this with Vortex, but we can't give you a timeline or roadmap now. Now the documentation, which is ready for public viewing, is very limited, but we hope to correct it in the coming months. I will update this news when its Introduction video is ready and you can get further updates by visiting its feed. Does Vortex include an import tool from NMM or MO? Vortex is installed as a standalone app on your computer. Any existing NMM and/or MO installations and installations will not be affected by Vortex installation and use. The only thing that will be affected is how NXM (download) links are handled on the site, for example that the app starts and downloads files when you press the Download button with the manager on the site. Vortex includes Import from NMM and Import from MO features that will try to copy the fashion setting from the respective fashion managers. This will not destroy and will not affect your installations. Please be patient during the process, it may take some time for Vortex to read your current fashion settings if they are particularly great. Because of the (now) archaic way that NMM processes files in your data folder, we recommend disabling any mods you set in NMM (or switching to an empty profile, which in turn clear any NMM files posted in the game data folder) if your import is in Vortex successfully. This is because Vortex and NMM are both trying to track which files they have installed and using several tools for the same game at the same time makes it difficult. If you need to go back to NMM, you can just disable Vortex and re- reapply your setup, as it used to be. As always, please back up your current modding setups in case the worst happens. Make sure you create a secure copy of your fashion setups elsewhere, so you can recover from this backup in case of a problem, and make sure you know how to restore those backups properly before trying to use Vortex.How should I provide feedback? Vortex contains a bug feedback and reporting system built into the software that can be accessed from the menu in the top right corner. If you have problems using the software, please report them using these methods, providing detailed information about what you were doing at the time of the problem. This is a straight line with Tannin and the fastest way to get any bugs noticed and fixed. If you've once posted your mistakes on forums or elsewhere, without using error reporting tools in Vortex, it's honestly not helpful to us. Feel free to discuss any errors elsewhere, but at least make sure you give us a proper error report from Vortex first (if you can!). Note of feedback Please keep in mind that currently Tannin is the only developer working on Vortex and as such, we have to manage our time carefully. For us it is more reasonable that he spends most of his time actually working on Vortex to improve it, because every hour he spends responding to user reviews an hour he hasn't spent working on Vortex himself.
