Panto Season 2017/2018

As December arrives and the tinsel comes out our thoughts turn to our seasonal traditions as Christmas cheer fills the air, in almost every theatre across the country a that seasonal tradition sparkles with uniquely British institution and tradition of Pantomime. Accessibility ranks high when it comes to panto with the majority of these glossy festive shows coming with audio descriptions and touch tours. I decided to choose a few of these to sample in theatres around the country and I found myself during December and January in Stoke on Trent indulging in the magic of Aladdin, down south in Crawley soaking up Snow White and the seven dwarfs, in Wolverhampton for Jack and the Beanstalk and taking a break in Southampton for a different interpretation of Snow White and finally experiencing a family festive production of a cult classic- 101 Dalmatians at the Birmingham Rep which was offering a pre-recorded audio description on every performance for the first time. Below are the reviews of these productions and their access services. Aladdin at the Regent Theatre Stoke On Trent – Audio described performance – Friday 22nd of December 7pm /touch tour 6pm Starring Jonathon Wilkes as Aladdin and Christian Patterson as Widow Twankey. The production ran from the 15th of December till 7th January 2018 We jumped on the magic carpet for a polished panto from QDOS that was, very funny and full of some really entertaining performances. Starting with a touch tour, a slick effective affair led by Describer Anne Hornsby and Technical Manager Kate, tour of 9 patrons explored the sets and scenery after an overview of the production which included some of the many lavish costumes, an array of shiny lamps and a few technical aspects of the production.

The new work from the recent Rose d’Or winners has been created by four internationally celebrated choreographers, alongside four eminent and completely different composers. It comprises of four short pieces, and will run alongside their previously acclaimed Fallen. A coproduction with Sadler’s Wells, and in association with artsdepot, Fourteen Days is on tour from 19 April to 29 May. The production will tour to: Poole, Bristol, Darlington, Nottingham, Colchester, Shrewsbury, Reading, Wolverhampton, Cornwall, Worthing, Swindon and Wycombe as well as returning to Sadler’s Wells in London, where musicians will join the dancers on stage for three of the five pieces. Choreographers Javier De Frutos (London Road), Craig Revel Horwood (West Side Story, Sunset Boulevard), Iván Pérez (Young Men) and Christopher Wheeldon (An American in Paris) have teamed up with composers Scott Walker, Charlotte Harding, Joby Talbot and Keaton Henson, with each pair given just fourteen days to work with the ensemble to create the new pieces. Playing with the concept of balance and imbalance, the result is an exciting and varied programme of dance and music in BalletBoyz’s inimitable style. Fallen forms the second half of the evening, choreographed by regular BalletBoyz collabora- tor and Sadler’s Wells Associate Artist Russell Maliphant (Broken Fall), and set to a pow- erful score by French film composer Armand Amar.

November 2017 South Hampshire Branch Dear Friends Welcome to our last full newsletter of 2017.However, we will continue to issue updates as and when necessary for the rest of the year. As always, we have details of our activities over the next month or so, plus other information that may be of interest. We particularly look forward to seeing some of you at our support group meeting on Monday, when we feature a film ‘premiere’ (see below)! Support Group Meeting Our next meeting is on Monday 20 November at Bishopstoke Evangelical Church at 7.30pm. We will have a ‘World Premiere’ showing of a film about our recent Autism and Mental Health consultation! The film features a number of branch members and adults with autism talking about their experiences. This film will be formally released next week and we hope it will be seen my many health professionals. There will be plenty of time at our meeting to have a chat and to browse our Resource Library, comprising around 400 books, videos and DVDs on many aspects of autism and Asperger syndrome. If you have any books due back or overdue, please don’t forget to bring them along.
