  • The Seven Ages of Musical Theatre: the Life Cycle of the Child Performer
UNIVERSITY OF SOUTHAMPTON The Seven Ages of Musical Theatre: The life cycle of the child performer by Lyndsay Barnbrook A thesis submitted in partial fulfillment for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Humanities Faculty School of Music April 2016 \A person's a person, no matter how small." Dr. Seuss UNIVERSITY OF SOUTHAMPTON Abstract Humanities Faculty School of Music Doctor of Philosophy The Seven Ages of Musical Theatre: The life cycle of the child performer by Lyndsay Barnbrook The purpose of the research reported here is to explore the part played by children in musical theatre. It aims to do this on two levels. It presents, for the first time, an historical analysis of involvement of children in theatre from its earliest beginnings to the current date. It is clear from this analysis that the role children played in the evolution of theatre has been both substantial and influential, with evidence of a number of recurring themes. Children have invariably made strong contributions in terms of music, dance and spectacle, and have been especially prominent in musical comedy. Playwrights have exploited precocity for comedic purposes, innocence to deliver difficult political messages in a way that is deemed acceptable by theatre audiences, and youth, recognising the emotional leverage to be obtained by appealing to more primitive instincts, notably sentimentality and, more contentiously, prurience. Every age has had its child prodigies and it is they who tend to make the headlines. However the influence of educators and entrepreneurs, artistically and commercially, is often underestimated. Although figures such as Wescott, Henslowe and Harris have been recognised by historians, some of the more recent architects of musical theatre, like Noreen Bush, are largely unheard of outside the theatre community.

By L. Frank Baum With Music and Lyrics of the MGM motion picture score By Harold Arlen and E. Y. Harburg Background Music by Herbert Stothart Dance and Vocal Arrangements by Peter Howard Adapted by John Kane from the motion picture screenplay By arrangement with MusicScope and Stage Musicals Limited of New York Chairperson’s Message Welcome to the Mercury Theatre and thank you for supporting CO2’s production of The Wizard of Oz. Societies like ourselves are finding it more and more difficult to find a show to perform that is not only suitable but has a fairly large cast. We become very frustrated when we hit upon a show only to find that the performance rights are not available. Last year’s production, Little Shop of Horrors was written for a cast of 10 but our production team managed to make it work with a cast of 40. I must congratulate them as we were awarded the NODA Best Musical in Area 11 in addition to Will Mugford who played Seymour being voted Best Young Actor in Area 11, so congratulations to all involved CO2 has performed The Wiz, a more upbeat production, but we thought this year we would produce what has become the classic MGM story as produced on stage by the Royal Shakespeare Company. So, no pressure on our production team who have enjoyed working with our cast of very talented youngsters, and I would like to thank them for all their hard work. Finally, I would like to take this opportunity to thank all who have helped with this production of The Wizard of Oz, plus the CO2 Committee for all their support, and you our audience who we continually rely upon to make this possible.

  • Panto Season 2017/2018
Panto Season Click here for the audio. As December arrives and the tinsel comes out our thoughts turn to our seasonal traditions as Christmas cheer fills the air, in almost every theatre across the country a that seasonal tradition sparkles with uniquely British institution and tradition of Pantomime. Accessibility ranks high when it comes to panto with the majority of these glossy festive shows coming with audio descriptions and touch tours. I decided to choose a few of these to sample in theatres around the country and I found myself during December and January in Stoke on Trent indulging in the magic of Aladdin, down south in Crawley soaking up Snow White and the seven dwarfs, in Wolverhampton for Jack and the Beanstalk and taking a break in Southampton for a different interpretation of Snow White and finally experiencing a family festive production of a cult classic- 101 Dalmatians at the Birmingham Rep which was offering a pre-recorded audio description on every performance for the first time. Below are the reviews of these productions and their access services. Aladdin at the Regent Theatre Stoke On Trent – Audio described performance – Friday 22nd of December 7pm /touch tour 6pm Starring Jonathon Wilkes as Aladdin and Christian Patterson as Widow Twankey. The production ran from the 15th of December till 7th January 2018 We jumped on the magic carpet for a polished panto from QDOS that was, very funny and full of some really entertaining performances. Starting with a touch tour, a slick effective affair led by Describer Anne Hornsby and Technical Manager Kate, tour of 9 patrons explored the sets and scenery after an overview of the production which included some of the many lavish costumes, an array of shiny lamps and a few technical aspects of the production.
