Highlands Music Coffee House Sat May 12th 7:30 1589 Millstream / by Donation The Hot Mushrooms with special guest jazz SAX star Monik Nordine pop, jazz & blues from the 60’s & 70’s we’re hosting an open Mic for the first set Monik Nordine has a powerful, lyrical, and impressive command of the saxophone and is one of BC’s top soprano and alto jazz saxophonists. She has received several prestigious arts awards and she performed on the JUNO-nominated album "Cruel Yet Fair" with the Hard Rubber Orchestra. She is a dynamic force in the Vancouver Island jazz scene, a freelance saxophonist and composer who has been working as a musician for 30 years. Monik directs The Victoria Jazz Orchestra and has performed with Rob McConnell, Hugh Fraser and VEJI, Guido Basso, Michael Buble, and the Victoria Symphony Orchestra among others. Monik started and ran the Salt Spring Island Jazz Festival for 3 years as well as the jazz series “Jazz at the Acme” in Nanaimo. She has recorded three albums as a leader: Not Just To But Over the Moon (1998), Departure (2010) and The Old-New Town (2017). Monik Nordine "" Sherry is an established drummer and teacher in Victoria. She brings creative energy and passion to a variety of styles: Jazz, Rock, R&B, Gospel. Performances have included Hypatia Women’s Jazz Orchestra with Campbell Ryga, Hugh Fraser, and June Katz, Tom Morrissey Band ( East Coast Nﬂd ), Don Leppard and Commodores Big Bands, and Funk’d Up. Her current projects are a Free Jazz trio with Monik Nordine and Ken Williams, Tanya Gillespie, an Elvis tribute, and an original rock opera “Leaders” by Antibody." Sherry Clayton Ken is a well known talented multi -instrumentalist whose many credits include studio bassist at Mushroom Studios in Vancouver, tours with the Dixon House Band and Heart’s Howard Leese, Rick Springﬁeld, Zipper and the New Vaudeville Band. He also co-owned Legacy Music Ltd and Kayum Sound Inc. specializing in music for movies and TV. His over 800 sound track credits as composer include Cannes and Sundance winner "In the Company of Men”, International Emmy winner "The Magician's House”, and Peabody winner "The Threads of Hope." He was also nominated for a Video Premiere Award for Best Composer for “Crimson Code”. Other composing credits include Warner's "Police Academy" and Disney's "So Weird”. Ken Williams.

Although the singer is widely known for being the riveting voice of "Sister Mary" on Queensrÿche's legendary concept album, Operation: Mindcrime, she's also released her own recordings, contributed her voice to various radio and television commercials, and has a background in theater. The latter came in handy over the past two years, as Moore joined Queensrÿche for an extensive world tour, reprising and expanding her familiar role as the love interest of "Nikki," Operation: Mindcrime's central character. Changes to her customary performance included additional vocal duties and acting out her character's parts on stage - a dramatic performance she was excited to have the opportunity to portray. "This time around I was able to sing more and help out on vocals," Moore explained. "The latter part of the year we really concentrated on bringing to life the Mindcrime show. Since I do have a theater background it was very enjoyable to pull that out again." While she was satisfied by her performance, the Seattle vocalist wasn't aware just how graphic the Sister Mary death scene was, as the character commits suicide by putting a bullet in her head. "I didn't realize it was so bloody," Moore admitted. "At the time [the show] was being rehearsed, I was on my honeymoon and wasn't able to return until a day before the tour started." Moore originally was contacted by the band to record the vocal parts for Sister Mary after the band discovered her doing radio and television commercials for a music store she was working at part time in the late 1980s.

Steve Fossen and Mike Derosier, the original bassist and drummer who were inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame with Heart, have reformed as a new band, Heart by Heart, and they have recreated iconic hits such as Magic Man, Barracuda, Straight On, Even It Up, Crazy On You, Dog And Butterﬂy and Heartless. Heart By Heart will perform at Kean Stage's Wilkins Theatre on Saturday, Sept. 23, at 7:30 p.m. "Michael and I were heavily involved in the writing, recording and mixing process back then," said Fossen. "There's no other rhythm section out there that can play the music as faithfully to the recordings as we do. Seeing Mike play is a really big treat for anyone who appreciates good drummers." Heart by Heart also features vocalist Somar Macek as lead singer, along with guitarist/keyboardist/vocalist Lizzy Daymont, and legendary Seattle guitarist Randy Hansen. JOE LYNN TURNER Joe Lynn Turner, is an American singer, known for his works with hard rock bands Deep Purple & Rainbow. Career In a career that spans nearly 30 years and includes over 60 album credits, Joe Lynn Turner ("JLT") remains one of rock and roll's most distinctive, soulful and expressive vocalists. Born August 2, 1951 in Hackensack, New Jersey (U.S.A.), he played the accordion as a child, grew up with an appreciation for classic Rhythm and Blues (R&B) and became an accomplished guitarist in his early teens. In fact, his first band, Filet of Soul, featured singer J.T. Taylor who would later have success with Kool and the Gang. While in high school, Joe formed Ezra, performing original material and cover songs by artists who were a great influence on him: Jimi Hendrix, Free and Deep Purple. In 1976, JLT enjoyed his first taste of national success with Fandango, a band described as an eclectic mix of R&B, pop, country, jazz and melodic rock. Turner sang and played guitar on all of the band's four albums. Fandango toured with numerous artists including The Allman Brothers, The Marshall Tucker Band, The Beach Boys and Billy Joel. After Fandango split, in the first of two incredible twists of Fate, JLT received a phone call from legendary guitarist Ritchie Blackmore. Turner's work with Fandango prompted an audition and Blackmore was so impressed that he immediately enlisted Joe in Rainbow, a band that he formed after he left Deep Purple. Ironically, Joe spent his formative years covering Deep Purple songs and now he found himself fronting a band with two former members: Blackmore and Roger Glover.
