Short Form Final Lottie Smalley May 21, 2018 The Top Ten Instagram Spots in Munich for your #abroadagenda #instatravel Page !1 Lottie Smalley May 21, 2018 Photo Op Fundamentals Your guide to the staple spots to snap in Munich Munich is notorious for it’s Oktoberfest, but there is more beyond the beer. Visitors to the southern Bavarian city will find eye-catching architecture, sunbathers and strollers enjoying its public gardens, and much more. If you visit this picturesque Bavarian city during one of the other eleven months of the year, here are ten top locations to hit up #forthegram. No. 1 // The Rathaus-Glockenspiel The detailed, high-relief, Rathaus- Glockenspiel at the Marienplatz in Munich is an obvious first stop. This delicately designed facade covers New Town Hall in the heart of Munich and stands in a lively part of town. 43 different bells rule the area as they chime each hour. Tourists wander the Marienplatz throughout day, but, at 11 am and 5 pm, crowds fill the square to check out the show that made this clock a classic. Page !2 Lottie Smalley May 21, 2018 No. 2 // Viktualienmarkt (Victuals Market) Next up on your Munich bucket list is the Victuals Market. Snag a taste of local tradition at this outdoor market place. It has a diverse selection of fresh flowers, ripe produce, and decadent treats. The market certainly provides a colorful spot for a photo if you want something with a more organic aesthetic. You’ll find it just outside (south-east) of the Marienplatz. No. 3 // Isar River The Isar River runs through Munich and adds a peaceful contrast to the energy of the city. Walking along the worn paths that line the banks of the river, you can see others crossing one of the many bridges that overlook the Isar. You can even wade to the “sandbar” for an afternoon of sun. Posting a photo with this natural staple will add a hybrid of both city and nature to your feed. Page !3 Lottie Smalley May 21, 2018 No. 4 // Max-Joseph-Platz The National Theatre is a historic opera house that sits in the back of the Max- Joseph-Platz. This massive square was named after Bavarian King, Maximillian Joseph and stands as a border to the royal avenue. The building itself pops off the pavement as if you’re wearing a pair of 3D glasses while reading your history textbook. Additionally, the cobblestone square adds a rustic and high contrast vibe to any photo. No. 5 // Richard-Strauss Fountain This small yet fun fountain is easy to stumble upon amid a stroll through Munich’s “living room,” the Marienplatz. The Richard-Strauss Fountain was erected to memorialize Richard Strauss, a famous Bavarian musician. A playful way to spice up any fountain photo is to make a wish, and toss a coin in! Who needs the Trevi fountain when you have one like this? Page !4 Lottie Smalley May 21, 2018 No. 6 // St. Peter’s Church St. Peter’s (“Old Peter”) is another cardinal stop to make while in Munich which stands in Old Town. This lavish church has been around since the 11th Century and is so intensely decorated it’s almost difficult to focus on one thing. At the same time, it’s a simple way to pause and calmly reflect on your day, all while taking in the striking artwork that surrounds you. No. 7 // Snack Break A picture is worth a thousand… calories? You can’t visit any new city without taking a few (…okay a ton of) snack breaks. My personal favorites include a German classic, brezel a.k.a. pretzel, and a classic cool-down treat, gelato! With so many options you are bound to find the snack for you and everyone loves a good #foodie gram. There are pastries, paninis, and pretzels on every corner and hey, after all, phone eats first! Page !5 Lottie Smalley May 21, 2018 No. 8 // New Town Hall New Town Hall serves as Munich’s office for the city council and mayor. It also features the aforementioned Glockenspiel on the front facing facade. Here’s the fun part: with a student ID, you can pay "1 to ride the elevator eight stories to the top of the building where you will find sweeping views of Munich. Similar to a lighthouse, you can walk around the entire balcony for a 360° view. Talk about a photo opportunity! No. 9 // Karlsplatz Ah, yes another “platz…” that's Munich for you! “Platz" translates to “Place,” and you will find a plethora of them during your visit. The Karlsplatz serves as an entrance to the pedestrian walkway through the Marienplatz. This gateway into the heart of Munich welcomes visitors, and is another great spot for your Instagram! Page !6 Lottie Smalley May 21, 2018 No. 10 // English Gardens The English Gardens in Munich are a real gem. It’s an escape from the bustle of the city and transports you to what feels like an old backyard for an afternoon immersed in nature. You can’t help but appreciate the dewy aroma that takes control the moment you step inside the Garden boundaries. A trip to the gardens will add a unique location to your feed, and also let your followers know there is more to Munich than the lederhosen and schnitzel. So there you have it. Ten places to visit if you are traveling to Munich and want to make your Instagram feed pop. By no means is this an exhaustive list (you could truthfully take a wonderful photo anywhere in the city), but if you are in town for a short window these are some great places to get started. Just recognize that while pictures are an essential part of traveling, practicing mindfulness and looking up from your camera to take it all in is just as important. Enjoy your time in Munich — ciao! MUNICH MOZART´S STAY The life and work of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart is closely connected to Munich, a centre of the German music patronage. Two of his most famous works Mozart composed in the residence city of Munich: On the 13th January, 1775 the premiere from „La finta giardinera “took place, on the 29th January, 1781 the opera "Idomeneo" was launched at Cuvilliés Theater. Already during his first trip at the age of six years Wolfgang played together with his sister Nannerl for Elector Maximilian Joseph III. The second visit followed a year later, in June, 1763. From Munich the Mozart family started to their three year European journey to Paris and London. On the way back from this triumphal journey they stopped in Munich again and Mozart gave concerts at the Emperors court. Main focus of the next trip to Munich (1774 – in 1775) was the premiere of the opera "La finta giardiniera" at the Salvatortheater. In 1777 when Wolfgang and his mother were on the way to Paris Munich was destination again and they stayed 14 days in the Isar city. Unfortunately, at that time Wolfgang aspired in vain to and permanent employment. Idomeneo, an opera which Mozart had composed by order of Elector Karl Theodor, was performed in Munich for the first time at the glamorous rococo theatre in the Munich palace, the Cuvilliés Theater. With pleasure he would have remained in Munich, however, there was, unfortunately, none „vacatur “for him again. In 1790 Mozart came for the last time to Munich on his trip to the coronation of Leopold II in Frankfurt.

DANUBE POLLUTION REDUCTION PROGRAMME EVALUATION OF WETLANDS AND FLOODPLAIN AREAS IN THE DANUBE RIVER BASIN FINAL REPORT MAY 1999 Programme Coordination Unit UNDP/GEF Assistance prepared by WWF Danube-Carpathian-Programme and WWF-Auen-Institut (Germany) DANUBE POLLUTION REDUCTION PROGRAMME EVALUATION OF WETLANDS AND FLOODPLAIN AREAS IN THE DANUBE RIVER BASIN FINAL REPORT MAY 1999 Programme Coordination Unit UNDP/GEF Assistance prepared by WWF Danube-Carpathian-Programme and WWF-Auen-Institut (Germany) Preface The "Evaluation of Wetlands and Flkoodplain Areas in the Danube River Basin" study was prepared in the frame of the Danube Pollution Reduction Programme (PRP). The Study has been undertaken to define priority wetland and floodplain rehabilitation sites as a component of the Pollution reduction Programme. The present report addresses the identification of former floodplains and wetlands in the Danube River Basin, as well as the description of the current status and evaluation of the ecological importance of the potential for rehabilitation. Based on this evaluation, 17 wetland/floodplain sites have been identified for rehabilitation considering their ecological importance, their nutrient removal capacity and their role in flood protection. Most of the identified wetlands will require transboundary cooperation and represent an important first step in retoring the ecological balance in the Danube River Basin. The results are presented in the form of thematic maps that can be found in Annex I of the study. The study was prepared by the WWF-Danube-Carpathian-Programme and the WWF-Auen-Institut (Institute for Floodplains Ecology, WWF-Germany), under the guidance of the UNDP/GEF team of experts of the Danube Programme Coordination Unit (DPCU) in Vienna, Austria.

  • Research Opportunities in Munich Yvonne Shafer
FALL 1991 235 Research Opportunities in Munich Yvonne Shafer Munich is both a theatrical city and a city with a great deal of theatre. Throughout the city are interesting theatre buildings, important theatre collections, museums with theatrical material, and statues relating to theatre. The theatres, their archives, and theatre collections are accessible and public transportation in Munich is excellent. Theatre ranges from puppet shows to the classics-indeed, one can see Faust performed as a puppet show as Goethe first intended it. In the handsome theatre lobbies, there is an air of excitement and sophistication as the theatre-goers drink champagne and discuss the performances. The audiences are very responsive: they laugh a great deal in plays received very earnestly in America, applaud thunderously when a play is good, and boo long and loud when they do not care for a production. In order to give a picture of theatre research opportunities various types of productions will be described, followed by a discussion of the theatre museums and several of the famous theatres in the city. In May 1991 there were several dozen plays, ballets, operas and other theatrical performances from which to choose. There are major subsidized theatres and opera houses, small commercial theatres, theatres for children, and experimental groups. A range of plays available on a given night included Entertaining Mr. Sloane, The Threepenny Opera, Cooney and Chapman's Not Now, Darling, Durrenmatt's The Accident, and Jesus Christ Superstar. There were performances of a British science-fiction comedy presented by the Action Theatre London (in English) called Black Magic-Blue Love, a Psychothriller Murder Voices, and an evening of song and acting in the OFF-OFF-Theater Club.
