In this issue you will again find a variety of information, which I hope will help many in their research. Several members have made some requests and I will try my best to provide the information they require. In the past month we have received books from 4 different people. Look for the review in this issue of BL We thank Paul CALLENS for sending copies of his latest Funeral Cards Books (4) as well as copies (in Dutch) of “Onze Voorouders”, published by the V.V.F. We thank André HENNICO for sending his book “Messancy- Monographie” chock full of wonderful information on Messancy and area, people and history. We also thank Ray Van Overschelde for sending a copy of his wonderful “Van Overschelde Family History”and finally we thank René RISCH for the French copy of the new “STEENO Clan” book. Each of these represents hours upon hours of research. I am in awe of their achievement. THANK YOU!!! With Memorial Day around the corner it seemed fitting to remember those less known heroes who supported the Allied efforts in secret. Look for Bruce BOLLINGER’s article about his uncle who hid some Jews during WWII. I can not keep from thinking about today’s drama in Iraq and pray this war also finds a happy and prompt ending. Also more new sites to check out. What ever did we do when the internet didn’t exist?! How lucky we are!!! Have a wonderful Spring! More in July! Regine Gourmet Center Story: Biscuit + Coffee = BISCOFF http://store.biscoff.com/cgi-bin/www40247.storefront/3de1a23902489fb02750d8f5a50206b3/Catalog The Corona-Lotus story begins in Belgium where the Boone brothers established their family business baking caramelized biscuits called Lotus Speculoos. Over the past seventy years, Corona-Lotus, N.V. has turned a once-small enterprise into a world- renowned business by honoring a tradition of craftsmanship and personal service. In 1984, the founders of Gourmet Center, Inc., an American firm that supplies food and beverages to the airline industry, discovered Lotus Speculoos on a trip to Belgium. They were delighted with the delicious biscuits. Working together, Corona-Lotus, N.V. and Gourmet Center renamed the beloved biscuit "Biscoff," a biscuit for coffee. In an effort to reach customers who had never tried these wonderful biscuits, we began distributing Biscoff Biscuits on airlines in 1984, to the delight of thousands of passengers. In response to overwhelming demand for the biscuits, a mail order catalogue was developed. In 1999, we launched www.biscoff.com and find that we are attracting an even wider group of "Biscoff Fans" around the world! Revealed! The Secrets of Biscoff (1) It's all in the mix! Only the highest quality ingredients are used. Biscoff dough must be mixed and kneaded in accordance with the Boone brothers' original 1932 recipe. The dough needs time to "rest" in just the right conditions - the temperature and humidity of the room will affect the dough rising correctly! Precision in the measurements of the freshest ingredients used has taken years to perfect. (2) Daily Dedication to being delicious! An expert panel of bakers, members of our staff, and invited customers judge the flavor, color and texture of the biscuits every day. In this way, Corona-Lotus and Gourmet Center can guarantee the taste and freshness of their caramelized biscuits. We present a patient with severe nonischemic cardiomyopathy in whom the HeartLogic algorithm was activated on her Boston Scientific cardioverter defibrillator. She had an out-of-alert state for several months and had clinically “stable” heart failure with no hospitalizations in the last 6 months. A sudden and fast increase of the HeartLogic index preceded her presentation in the emergency ward by several days. The detailed readout of HeartLogic however had some atypical features for heart failure decompensation. The patient presented at the emergency department with an increased dyspnea and a dry cough. Clinical exam showed desaturation and was suggestive for an acute respiratory infection.

  • 1 Unmasking the Fake Belgians. Other Representation of Flemish And
Unmasking the Fake Belgians. Other Representation of Flemish and Walloon Elites between 1840 and 1860 Dave Sinardet & Vincent Scheltiens University of Antwerp / Free University of Brussels Paper prepared for 'Belgium: The State of the Federation' Louvain-La-Neuve, 17/10/2013 First draft All comments more than welcome! 1 Abstract In the Belgian political debate, regional and national identities are often presented as opposites, particularly by sub-state nationalist actors. Especially Flemish nationalists consider the Belgian state as artificial and obsolete and clearly support Flemish nation-building as a project directed against a Belgian federalist project. Walloon or francophone nationalism has not been very strong in recent years, but in the past Walloon regionalism has also directed itself against the Belgian state, amongst other things accused of aggravating Walloon economic decline. Despite this deep-seated antagonism between Belgian and Flemish/Walloon nation-building projects its roots are much shorter than most observers believe. Belgium’s artificial character – the grand narrative and underpinning legitimation of both substate nationalisms - has been vehemently contested in the past, not only by the French-speaking elites but especially by the Flemish movement in the period that it started up the construction of its national identity. Basing ourselves methodologically on the assumption that the construction of collective and national identities is as much a result of positive self-representation (identification) as of negative other- representation (alterification), moreover two ideas that are conceptually indissolubly related, we compare in this interdisciplinary contribution the mutual other representations of the Flemish and Walloon movements in mid-nineteenth century Belgium, when the Flemish-Walloon antagonism appeared on the surface.

  • Social Injustice to Floods in Flanders (Belgium): a GIS Analysis Tom Goosse1, Luuk Boelens2 & Hannelore Mees3
Social Injustice to floods in Flanders (Belgium): a GIS analysis Tom Goosse1, Luuk Boelens2 & Hannelore Mees3 Abstract Flanders (Belgium) applies the Multi-Layered Water Safety concept to cope with Flood Risk Management (FRM). Next to the traditional protective infrastructure this concept addresses spatial planning, crisis management and recovery structures. It implies a shared responsibility between stakeholders from the public, private and civic sector. However, little is known about the populations living in flood prone areas, and if it is just or efficient to ask their cooperation. This paper explores the social characteristics of the exposed population, through a GIS-analysis of the spatial distribution of the different social vulnerability indicators. Two sets of social data are used: statistical sectors for the whole of Flanders and building blocks for the Denderleeuw, Ninove and Geraardsbergen municipalities, which are particularly prone to floods. While a disproportionate exposure of non-Belgians to floods is observed in the non-urban areas of the three municipalities, statistical tests indicate this difference is non-significant. Nevertheless, from the perspective of distributive justice, these inequalities indicate the need for area-specific approaches based on the social characteristics of the population to ensure the efficiency and social justice in FRM. In terms of procedural justice, the social vulnerability indicators entail an underrepresentation in the public participation regarding flood risk policies. These findings advocate the involvement of the citizens at the local scale to define the most appropriate measures in FRM. Acknowledgments Access to the social data aggregated per building block was procured by the Data & Analysis Support Centre of the Province of East-Flanders (Flanders).
