Cherub was an alternative British theatre company whose work in the 1980s defied most of the categories which inscribed theatre practice in Britain. Because they did not fit canonical definitions, Cherub was said to be producing “bad” theatre. -

Premium Rate Telephony and Associated Issues Final Report from the BBC Director General to the BBC Trust, May 2007 1. Introduction 1.1 Context Following a number of revelations and resulting investigations into broadcasters’ use of premium rate telephony, allegations about BBC activity in this area surfaced in late February of this year. Reports were first published in the News of the World on 25 February about some pre-recorded editions of Saturday Kitchen. These were followed by a contact from a member of the public to the BBC on 9 March regarding an edition of Blue Peter broadcast in November 2006. On 17 March the Daily Mirror made further allegations about audience deception in relation to a second children’s programme, Smile. This report seeks to provide for the Trust an overview of the issues surrounding the BBC’s use of premium rate phonelines and the particular incidents which have been investigated. It also provides an account of the actions that have and will be taken by the BBC in relation to the various concerns which have surfaced. 1.2 Investigative Work Undertaken The BBC has investigated each set of allegations as they have arisen and where issues have been identified has sought to address them comprehensively. Over the last two months, the following work has therefore been undertaken: • Initial review by Controller, Daytime of Saturday Kitchen 5th March 2007 • Initial review by Controller, BBC Children’s of Blue Peter 9th to 14th March 2007 • Initial review by Controller, BBC Children’s of Smile 16th to 19th March 2007 • Independent review to inform BBC management on what went wrong on Blue Peter by Andrea Wills, former Chief Adviser, Editorial Policy, for the Director, BBC Vision, 17th May 2007. -

Lorraine Heggessey Media Executive Media Masters – July 9 , 2020 Listen to the podcast online, visit www.mediamasters.fm Welcome to Media Masters, a series of one-to-one interviews with people at the top of the media game. Today I'm joined down the line by Lorraine Heggessey. Educated at Durham University and initially starting in newspaper journalism, she began her TV career joining the BBC in 1979 as a news trainee. After five years, she left for a stint in the commercial sector, working on ITV's This Week and various programs for Channel 4. She returned to the BBC in 1993, working in the science department, editing QED and executive producing Animal Hospital and The Human Body. In 1997, she became head of children's BBC, memorably firing Blue Peter presenter, Richard Bacon, for taking cocaine. In 2000 Lorraine was appointed the first female controller of BBC One, commissioning Strictly Come Dancing and bringing back Dr. Who. In 2005 she left the Beeb and was appointed Chief Executive of Talkback Thames, responsible for over 800 hours of tele a year, including The X Factor and Britain's Got Talent. In 2017 she left the broadcast world and became Chief Executive of The Royal Foundation, the charity for the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and Prince Harry. She moved on two years later when the Sussex's set up their own charitable initiative. Today she works as a media consultant, public speaker, advisor to Channel 4's Growth Fund, and is also chair of the Grierson Trust, which helps young people from diverse backgrounds get into documentary making. -

Introduction Television production is a sector of the media industry whose performance has important cultural and economic ramifications. In the UK, the growing prosperity of the programme-making sector – attributable partly to historic policy interventions – is widely recognised as a success story (Darlow, 2004; Potter, 2008). However a wave of corporate consolidation and takeovers since 2004, characterized by many leading UK production companies being bought out and often by US media conglomerates, has raised concern about the ability of the independent production sector to flourish in an increasingly globalized and competitive digital environment for television (Doyle and Paterson, 2008; Campelli, 2015). -

The Hetherington Lecture Joan Bakewell Nov 19.2008 ……. Ladies and gentlemen, Thank you for inviting me to give the 2009 Hetherington Memorial lecture, created to honour the memory of one of the most distinguished journalists and editors of his day. He was editor of the Guardian for 19 years until 1975, Controller of BBC Scotland for three years after that, and ended his career as research professor in Media Studies at Stirling University. While having nothing like his distinction and perspicacity, or his physical stamina as a hill-walker, I can claim connection with all three media institutions: I have for over 4 decades maintained a freelance’s working relationship as a broadcaster with the BBC and other television channels, I enjoyed 3 years as a columnist with the Guardian, and I was recently made an honorary fellow of Stirling University. It was with Professor Hetherington’s integrity and radicalism in mind that I chose to speak of the “Credibility Crunch – the media and morality.” 1 I chose that title shortly after I agreed to give the lecture and had at the back of my mind then, a lurking fear that perhaps by November times would have moved on and when the day came both the phrases and the subject matter might seem a little dated. Surely crunches would be a thing of the past: by now a tired journalistic cliché for a state of affairs that had come and gone. More particularly I thought that in terms of television, -which is what primarily concerns me here, - the period of unhappy scandals that had hit the headlines would surely have passed….
