In the UK, the growing prosperity of the programme-making sector – attributable partly to historic policy interventions – is widely recognised as a success story (Darlow, 2004; Potter, 2008). However a wave of corporate consolidation and takeovers since 2004, characterized by many leading UK production companies being bought out and often by US media conglomerates, has raised concern about the ability of the independent production sector to flourish in an increasingly globalized and competitive digital environment for television (Doyle and Paterson, 2008; Campelli, 2015).
