On the basis of chromosome numbers, morphology, and distribution, it is possible to distinguish some 24 groups within the species investi gated.Th echromosom e numbers represent aheteroploi d serieswhic h isbase d on the (secondary) base numbers 10, 11, 14, 15, 17,an d 18.Evidenc e isgive n that 2n = 36 isth e more primitive one.Evolutio n on thechromosom e level hasmos t likelygon ei n the direction of a reduction in numbers.
