The Critic as Producer: Essays on Architecture Columbia University GSAPP / Fall 2014 James Graham, [email protected] This seminar will examine the role of critics, criticism, and the essay form in shaping how we understand architecture, in public life and within architectural discourse. We will consider reviews as testing grounds for the author’s own intellectual commitments (theoretical, architectural, political) as those ideas are refracted through the work of others. Readings will include foundational texts in critical theory, histories of reviewing and essay writing, and predominantly the essays themselves. We will explore the complex responses to buildings across generational shifts through selected case studies, and we will speak with practitioners of the review in various forms. Finally, we will consider current trajectories within architectural writing and publishing, particularly a recent resurgence in the essay format (spawned in part by the rise of digital publication formats). This seminar is being taught in conjunction with the launch of The Avery Review, a new digital journal for critical essays on architecture run by the GSAPP Office of Publications (www.averyreview.com). While the essays there will not be required reading, the seminar is intended in part to help shape the direction of the journal and to explore the theoretical and historical underpinnings of this mode of writing, and students are asked to follow the journal so that it might enter our conversations from time to time. Students will be expected to participate vigorously in all class discussions, take an active role in leading the seminar once in the course of the semester, complete one group presentation on an architectural magazine or journal, and produce their own critical work in the form of two essays (strictly 2,000–3,000 words). -

Since September 2003, the city has lit the “Tribute in Light,” two powerful spotlight beams that soar into the night air where the World Trade Center once was1) (the “Tribute in Light” was first launched on March 11, 2002, for an initial period of one month).2) On the actual anniversary, New York has hosted a prayer service and public reading of the names of the dead. Please contact the author for permission to quote or cite material from this paper. 2 Introduction Debates about the effects of globalization during the past few years often focus on the question of whether the rapid migrations of people, images, and capital have reduced differences between national cultures, or just given them a wider territory and more means of expression. Skeptics argue that this is an age-old question that can never be resolved. In every era, trade routes and travelers have carried new ideas and materials across great distances, permitting indigenous groups to create fusions that gradually grow into new historical traditions. From this point of view, current global trends are neither stranger nor more innovative than “native” weavers who integrate imported dyes into traditional rug patterns or musicians who learn to play traditional instruments in a foreign rhythm. -

APPROVED BY HUD (as of 11/23/04) LOWER MANHATTAN DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION Partial Action Plan No. 8 for The World Trade Center Memorial and Cultural Program, Related Initiatives, and Lower Manhattan Tourism Overview The Lower Manhattan Development Corporation (LMDC) has prepared the following Partial Action Plan with regard to the $2 billion federal grant for the World Trade Center disaster recovery and rebuilding efforts administered by the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). LMDC has received additional funding through a $783 million grant from HUD for damaged properties and businesses (including the restoration of utility infrastructure) as well as economic revitalization related to the terrorist attacks at the World Trade Center. This plan details the proposed expenditure of up to $65,259,894.74 to fund the items listed below. Of this proposed funding, $64,259,894.74 will be taken from the remaining amounts from the $2.78 billion allocation. An additional $1,000,000.00 in program income is proposed in this Partial Action Plan to be allocated to the World Trade Center Memorial Foundation. This funding will not be taken from the remaining Community Development Block Grant funding. An overview of the proposed funding is as follows: 1. Six Canonical Projects by Rem Koolhaas
5 Six Canonical Projects by Rem Koolhaas has been part of the international avant-garde since the nineteen-seventies and has been named the Pritzker Rem Koolhaas Architecture Prize for the year 2000. This book, which builds on six canonical projects, traces the discursive practice analyse behind the design methods used by Koolhaas and his office + OMA. It uncovers recurring key themes—such as wall, void, tur montage, trajectory, infrastructure, and shape—that have tek structured this design discourse over the span of Koolhaas’s Essays on the History of Ideas oeuvre. The book moves beyond the six core pieces, as well: It explores how these identified thematic design principles archi manifest in other works by Koolhaas as both practical re- Ingrid Böck applications and further elaborations. In addition to Koolhaas’s individual genius, these textual and material layers are accounted for shaping the very context of his work’s relevance. By comparing the design principles with relevant concepts from the architectural Zeitgeist in which OMA has operated, the study moves beyond its specific subject—Rem Koolhaas—and provides novel insight into the broader history of architectural ideas. I liked its raw state; film posters adverts still hanging up from films premiered months prior. The brutal reality of the site in baring its bones. The paper cranes left by the schoolchildren. The Holocaust Museum along with the Anne Frank Haus spoke to me; the stories behind the lives of these beautiful people subjected to nothing but hate for who they loved and who they were. The educational component to the Holocaust Museum in D.C. spoke volumes to me. To follow the journey of a Holocaust victim... For Pulse, I see a blend of all of this. To learn the stories of why so many sought refuge and enjoyment there. Why did so many leave their "families"? Because they could not be who they were. I find it is important that we teach this lesson-it's okay to be who you are-we have your back-we love you-we will dance with you-in any form of structure. -

Cover rendering and photos courtesy of Ennead Architects Cover rendering and photo this page: The new Bridge for Laboratory Sciences building at Vassar College, designed by Richard Olcott/Ennead Architects, redefines the identity of the sciences on the College’s historic campus and provides technologically advanced facilities for students, faculty, and researchers. Fundamental to the building’s design is its seamless integration with the natural landscape, scale, and campus aesthetic of the College. In this natural wooded setting, the need for strategies to reduce bird collisions with the building was apparent. In response, the building was designed to comply with LEED Pilot Credit 55: Bird Collision Deterrence. Ennead managing partner Guy Maxwell is a nationally recognized champion of bird-friendly design and has led Ennead’s innovative approach to make the building’s glazing safer for birds, employing patterned glass, screens and sunshades, and Ornilux glass, a specialty glass product that uses a UV coating visible to birds but not humans. By framing and showcasing views of the landscape, the building celebrates and connects students with the surrounding environment, while the overall development of the precinct repurposes an Exterior glass detail Glass detail, showing frit pattern underutilized sector of campus. The design features 184 stainless steel benches, with a name of each of the victims. The benches are oriented outward or inward to the Pentagon, depending on whether the victim was on the plane or inside the building. Each bench will feature a lighted pool beneath it, and a grove of trees will cover the site -- permitting contemplation at any of the benches. The dedication plaque reads: We claim this ground in remembrance of September 11, 2001.
