HIGHLIGHTS IOM Burundi's Migrant Protection and Assistance (MPA) Department successfully launched the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-based Violence (GBV) campaign. Awareness-raising activities were organized in dierent , from debates and theatre sketches to focus groups.

A handover ceremony for IT, health, surveillance, and communication equipment from IOM took place at the Ministry of Public Health and the Fight Against AIDS (MoH) on 25 November, attended by the Minister and IOM Chief of Mission.

Their excellencies the European Union (EU) Delegation Ambassador and the Minister of Interior, Community Development and Public Security launched the rst multi-hazard assessment and risk mapping workshop on 26 November as part of an ongoing project on disaster risk reduction in Burundi.

DISASTER RISK REDUCTION (DRR)

A DRR Project Cooperation agreement was signed between the Government of Burundi and IOM on 28 October 2020. Jointly implemented by IOM, OXFAM and the National Platform for Risk Prevention and Disaster Management, the EU-funded project was presented to governors and communal administrators in Burundi’s 18 provinces, including the project’s targets and how all stakeholders can collaborate to implement the project’s activities in their respective provinces and communes. A rst multi-hazard assessment and risk mapping workshop was held on 26 November to present preliminary ndings and discuss the risk mapping methodology. Over 100 participants attended, including DRR technicians from national and international institutions, UN agencies, NGOs, and media. Vulnerability risk assessment activities were jointly conducted with OXFAM in 22 communes in , Ngozi, Muyinga, Cankuzo, Kirundo, Ruyigi, Bubanza, Makamba, Kayanza, Karusi, and Rutana provinces.

NON-FOOD ITEMS (NFI) / SHELTER – WATER, SANITATION AND HYGIENE (WASH) – HOUSING, LAND AND PROPERTY (HLP) 510 rental support grants were delivered to returnees and persons aected by natural disasters in Rural, Cankuzo, and Ruyigi provinces. 230 shelter repair and latrine kits each were distributed in Cankuzo and Ruyigi provinces. Cash-for-work was paid to masons and bene ciaries for shelter construction activities. 10 communes hosted awareness-raising sessions on land and property aimed at key actors at the communal level involved in the land registration process. The HLP team delivered a capacity-building training for communal administration personnel in Ruyigi and Cankuzo provinces. 240 NFI kits distributed in Gatumba zone, Bujumbura Rural .

MIGRANT PROTECTION AND ASSISTANCE (MPA) 7 trainings on counter-tracking and training-of-trainers were organized for the judicial police, criminal justice and immigration practitioners in Bururi, Gitega, Makamba, and Ngozi provinces. These trainings aimed to improve the participants’ ability to detect, identify, protect, and assist victims of tracking while enforcing anti-tracking legislation in accordance with international standards. Psychosocial rst aid, NFI, food and cash assistance was provided to vulnerable migrants returning to Burundi. 99 vulnerable returnees were helped to access accommodation and food in Cankuzo, Muyinga and Ruyigi provinces. Some of them were screened and referred to medical services when incidents of GBV were identi ed.

NOVEMBER 2020 TRANSITION AND RECOVERY (TRD) Over 1,100 people directly bene tted from 15 Quick Impact Projects implemented in 2020, with the support of Help A Child, highlighted by a closing ceremony in end of November. Implemented in Muyinga, Rutana, and Makamba provinces, these projects ranged from theatre and football matches to rehabilitated classrooms, water reservoirs, public fountains, marketplaces, and bathrooms.
