Wednesday October 18, 7pm General Meeting GoMoto 3346 Washington Ave No, Minneapolis, MN 612-588-6686 2 NOTES FROM GARY’S GARAGE By Gary Kloss It’s the end of August already, and it seems like summer just started but it’s already starting to wind down. Time is just flying by, but I hope we still have quite a few good riding days left. If anyone didn’t make our spring show you missed our best yet, in my humble opinion. With over 200 Motorcycles on display with probably our largest field entered for judging yet. Rodger Rimnac and his crew had there hands full judging all those bikes. They spent many hours over two days going over all those machines, Thanks guys! Tom Whittles basically sold out all the vending spots he had so the swap meet has been growing steadily and we need to find a way to squeeze more spaces in next year. I walked the grounds and thanked as many venders as I could for being there and most thanked the club for having them and said they planed on coming back next year. They also commented that they felt very welcome and will recommend our meet to others. So another Thanks to Tom, his Wife and the rest of the helpers who set the swap area up. Thanks again to Sean O’Neil for overseeing the whole thing. And last but not least Dave Moot and his volunteers who did all the decorating, I heard a lot of positive comments about all kinds of things people were finding in those displays! Thanks again! As a personal note, until I became Prez. I didn’t real- ly know how much work the above people and their volunteers put in for our benefit, if you get a chance thank them! Unfortunately I wasn’t able to attend the chicken BBQ but I heard the food was great (Thanks Doug) and all went well. But we still have openings for nominees for Treasurer and President. If you ever thought of serving our club now might be the time to step up, give it a thought. For the people going to Davenport Have a safe trip and find some treasures! Remember if you ride with the club groups they count as club rides too. Till next time, Gary EDITOR’S NOTE By Tim Gadban Well at the end of this year I’ll be hangin up my keyboard. It has been a great five year run, but I need a break as I have quite a few other projects in the works. Cal Spooner will be taking over as newsletter editor and I have the utmost confidence that he will do an excellent job … he is an articulate and saucy individual, so I know he will continue to provide you with an entertaining newsletter. The Viking Chapter really needs some folks to step up and volunteer to do stuff, especially on the Board of Directors. Why the same eight people continue to recycle through the BOD (for multiple years) is beyond me when there are over two hundred members. This year we need a new Treasurer and a new President and so far nobody has stepped forward. This looks like a crisis of sorts, es- pecially when the existing officers are willing to mentor replacements. So take that leap of faith and volunteer …. otherwise you might wind up in a situation where one or two people are making all the decisions for the club! As usual with our club the summer has been full of activities and events, as well as a couple of members passing from this life. We have had a lot of fun times and the camaraderie is strong. Oh and look at all the new members this quarter! Kudos to Dave Glennen for his role as Membership Coordinator and club recruiter. !!!New Blood!!! He had many passions (including motorcycling) …. his family, fishing and hunting among them and enjoyed life to the fullest. Doug will be missed for many reasons. His personality drew people in. He was always welcoming. I first met him over 25 years ago through an ad for motorcycle parts and have been friends since (although my wife might not be too happy about all the stuff I bought from him!). Doug had an amazing network of friends and contacts. - Tom Sheldon Rest in Peace Doug - Motorcycling lost one of the good ones. - Jerry Wieland DON McGILLIVRAY May 3, 1932 - July 14, 2017 Don was one of the seminal members of the Viking Chap- ter along with Rick Wyatt, Tom Jones and Harvey Ber- quist. He grew up in LeRoy on the Beaver Park Cattle Farm owned and operated by his parents.

  • Meanings in Motorcycling
MEANINGS IN MOTORCYCLING by ROBERT GORDON REEVES B.A. , University of Manitoba, 1969 A THESIS SUBMITTED IN PARTIAL FULFILMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF MASTER OF ARTS in the Department of Anthropology and Sociology We accept this thesis as conforming to the required standard. I further agree that permission for extensive copying of this thesis for scholarly purposes may be granted by the Head of my Department or by his representatives. It is understood that copying or publication of this thesis for financial gain shall not be allowed without my written permission. V Department of •J The University of British Columbia Vancouver 8, Canada ^ Date ABSTRACT The thesis is divided into three major sections. Section One is devoted to a discussion' of the motives and assumptions behind this particular study and of the problems involved in formulating a research procedure. The general intent is to generate an account of some important facets of the North : American motorcycling boom. The basic method is to ask / approximately fifteen'hundred cyclists, "VJhat do you get out ' of it?" in a series of separate motorcycle -situated encounters- It is assumed that this procedure elicits subject accounts of what motorcycling means. A schemata is developed to explain the process by which a single account of these many parti• cipant explications may be created.

Dear SCCA Media Partners, Welcome to what is truly a new era of the Sports Car Club of America, as the SCCA National Champi- onship Runoffs heads west for the first time in 46 years to Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca. This event, made possible with the help of our friends and partners at Mazda and the Sports Car Rac- ing Association of the Monterey Peninsula (SCRAMP), was met with questions at its announcement that have been answered in a big way, with more than 530 drivers on the entry list and a rejunvenaton of the west coast program all season long. While we haven’t been west of the Rockies since River- side International Raceway in 1968, it’s hard to believe it will be that long before we return again. The question on everyone’s mind, even more than usual, is who is going to win? Are there hidden gems on the west coast who may be making their first Runoffs appearance that will make a name for themselves on the national stage, or will the traditional contenders learn a new track quickly enough to hold their titles? My guess is that we’ll see some of each.
