St. John’s Lutheran Church

October 2016 Church Bell

From the Desk of Pastor Clark

[Jesus said,] “Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you are like whitewashed tombs, which outwardly appear beautiful, but within are full of dead people’s bones and all uncleanness.” – Matthew 23:27

hy would anybody ever want to kill Jesus? Wasn’t He the kindest person in the history of the world?” Yes, He was…but He also called spade a spade! Twenty times in the Gospels, Jesus called people “hypocrites.” Using Wthat word doesn’t usually go over so well! Later this month, many kids are going to be wearing masks walking door to door. Similarly, the word “hypocrite” in the Greek language literally means to wear a mask. In other words, who you are in public is not who you are behind closed doors. , let’s be honest; all of have a little “hypocrite” in us, right? As Christians, we certainly know what is right and wrong, but do we always choose what is right? No, we don’t. Sometimes what people see of us at church is not equivalent to who we are throughout the rest of the week. Now, I think it is pretty safe to say that none of wants to be known as a hypocrite. Not only does it make us feel horrible; it also is a terrible witness to the rest of the world watching us. So, what’s the answer? Well, the answer is what it always is: go to God! Because of Jesus, we don’t have to run AWAY from Him; we can run TO Him! Confess your hypocrisy to Him, ask Him for forgiveness, and then (very important!) receive His forgiveness. God accepts us hypocrites because Jesus’ suffering and death paid for our hypocrisy in full. Then, like King David— he had been exposed as a big-time hypocrite—ask God to give you a new and clean heart (see Psalm 51). The Helper, the Holy Spirit, lives in you to change your heart from the inside out when you invite Him. It’s a whole lot easier to do what’s right when your heart is right! 1 (Continued on page 3)

(Continued from page 1) It’s really tiring to wear masks, isn’t it? But, here’s the good news: you don’t have to! Confess your hypocrisy to Him when you see it, receive His forgiveness for Jesus’ sake, and invite the Holy Spirit to change your heart! God bless you! Pastor Clark

NEW SECURITY MEASURES

During our regular office hours of: Monday-Friday, 8:30am-4:30pm, there will be limited access to our building in hopes of creating a secure, safe, and welcoming environment for our church family and preschool. This new security measure will begin on Monday, September 26th.

ACCESS OPTIONS Groups or individuals have several options to access the building: Doorbell: Both the Noah’s Ark and Family Life Center doors have a doorbell with a camera that connects with the church office and can be unlocked by church staff during office hours.

Access Code: These codes are 4-5 digits in length. The code can be punched into a keypad to allow entry through the Noah’s Ark doors. The code will only allow access during the hours the group typically meets.

Electronic Fob or Card: This small piece of plastic can be used to electronically unlock the Noah’s Ark or Family Life Center doors. Each will be set to allow access only during the hours the group typically meets. Available with a $10 de- posit.

Key: Keys are usually reserved for those on boards or committees for the church and should be left with the church secretary when no longer volunteering for that role or position.

SECURITY SYSTEM SCHEDULE EXCEPTIONS Worship/VBS • Weddings/Funerals • Community Bible Study (Thursday mornings during school year) • FEET School Co-op • Blood Drives • Other Large- Group Events

Please contact the church office to get the code for your group or to pick up an electronic fob or card. Carla and Beth will be happy to show you how to use the code or the fob.

This will be a learning process for all of us, so please be understanding and patient. We want to give everyone safe access to St. John’s!

Thank you for making our 7th Annual Family Fun Fest a successful event. It was successful because of all of you who attended, volunteered, donated & participated in a variety of ways. Our Committee gratefully thanks all of you. Thank you to everyone who helped with setting up & tear- ing down, especially our Trustee & Elder Boards. Thank you to Chris Ryan and all the Youth for running the games. Thank you to everyone who helped us with decorating, ticket sales, hair styling & face painting, food serving line, kitchen help, bingo, helping with adult games & raffle. Thank you to everyone who donated bars, pies, beans, grilling chops, pork shots & raffle priz- es. We had a wonderful, fun-filled day thanks again to all of YOU. Thanks for “Being the Church!” ~ FFF Committee

To the church community, Thank you so much for your generous gift to my education. As I continue my time at Concordia College in Moorhead I’m discovering my callings—both academic and vocational. I work with students daily in admissions and residence life, my chance to serve others as Christ did. This semester I’m taking a course entirely about Luther and his legacy. Luther went through much in his efforts to show others Christ’s grace. As we celebrate the anniversary of the Reformation around the world, I ask that we keep those who also are suffering in this world in our prayers. 62.— The true treasure of the church is the Holy Gospel of the glory and the grace of God. Luther’s 62 Thesis. Many thanks again and peace be with you. ~ Marah Moy

Country Fair Update

It is just over a month until our 48th Annual Country Fair for Missions, Saturday, November 12th, from 8 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., and we warmly invite you to join us! We’re hoping to fill the shops with lots of items. Quilts, knitted, crocheted, and sewn items, dishcloths, embroidered dishtowels, painted items, baby things, note cards, homemade jewelry are some ideas. Also, pickles, jams, jellies, salsa, plants, garden produce, Christmas ornaments, decorations, attic treasures, and baskets for the Silent Auction. In addition, we need a variety of baked goods: breads, pies, cakes, bars, candies, and cookies. This year, we are adding a homemade, natural cleaning product area, and are making some Wednesday, October 13, and Wednesday, October 27 during Confirmation in the little kitchenette by the church office. On October 13 we’ll assemble and package natural laundry detergent. It is easy to make and works well. That night we’ll decide what product(s) to make on October 27. If your kids are in Confirmation and you’re free for that hour, or you would enjoy a nice evening of fellowship and helping out at the same time, please join us. Call Beth Husom at 952-715-7281 with questions or ideas. Please let us know if you can help in any of the areas, including the Gift Shop, Country Store, Holiday Shop, Craft Shop, Silent Auction, Attic Treasures, Bake Shop, Christmas Cookie Shop, Kid’s Korner, Coffee Shop, Mexican Shop, Chinese Dining Room, or in the kitchen helping to prepare, or serve, the Chow Mein. Of note: We need someone to help bake the quiche and cinnamon rolls the morning of the fair. The quiche will be assembled the night before, so it’s mainly having a person there to ensure the brunch items don’t get burned. Women in Mission will be baking fruitcake for Country Fair. Watch for that date, and other updates in the bulletin. We will set up for the fair all day on Friday, November 11th, with a potluck lunch at noon. And on November 12th, we’ll need many hands before, during, and after this important, and fun, mission project. Please contact Mary Bremmer, 763-682-5581, Clarine Meyer, 320-274-2421, or Chris Husom, 763-682-3997 with any suggestions or questions. Thank you very much!

LWML/WIM/St. John’s Women

To say things are happening at Women in Mission seems like an understatement. October and November are busy months. At the August meeting, board members welcomed new President Mary Bremmer. She picked a wild time to take the helm, and has already done much. We are grateful for our past President Pat Norine who will continue to assist on projects. Women in Mission and LWML is all about service and reaching out, and their theme is “Serve the Lord with gladness.” October will start— in a word—joyfully. Mary Ellen Wood is the featured guest and presenter at the LWML Zone Rally we are hosting for our members and sister churches on Saturday, October 1. Mary Ellen is married to Mark Wood, the Director of Witness and Outreach for the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod. He travels the nation, evangelizing to the unchurched and serving as a resource to congregations. Mary Ellen often travels with him. She is also a well-versed presenter, and will share ways to joyfully reach out and connect with women in church as well as the unchurched. Register at church at 8:30. We’ll have presentations, small groups and lunch from 9-noon. The event costs $5.00 and this includes our meal. Childcare is provided. Bring a Gift from the Heart donation, such as colored men’s sweatshirts and pants, boxer shorts, crew length socks, and white crewneck undershirts. They are for the St. Cloud VA Hospital to help veterans. LWML Sunday is one week later, on October 8. This year’s theme is “Come and See” from Psalm 66:5. Come, see and find out a little bit more about LWML. Just as Mary Ellen Wood will speak on uplifting topics, Psalm 66 in its entirety and the latest Lutheran Women’s Quarterly focus on joy. Psalm 66 starts with, “Shout for joy to God, all the earth!” and Lutheran Women’s Quarterly’s theme is “Count it All Joy.” Both are excellent reads. Time is flying and the Country Fair will be here soon. Please read the separate Country Fair article on page 19 for specifics. I will highlight one item: Women in Mission is hosting two additional events in October. What happens when you mix Little House on the Prairie and Pinterest? You get Country Fair’s newest section, an area of homemade, natural products. To prepare for it, we are taking two days in October while kids are in confirmation and putting some of the products together. Let’s meet on October 13 and 27 at 6pm in the kitchenette by the office. We’ll start by making and packaging some laundry detergent that’s easy to put together and works well. At that time, we’ll talk about future products. If you have ideas for detergent 18 or other cleaning recipes or want to help but can’t make the event, please let Beth Husom know at [email protected]. Because confirmation kids are in the kitchen at that time, can’t make products that require cooking, but could schedule something at a different time. We all can make a difference. My favorite part of LWML is their emphasis on using our gifts to serve the Lord in the best way we know how—whatever you can do helps. There is an excellent article in this quarterly titled “Joy Comes in the Morning,” by Christine Scheele Weerts, dedicated to amazing community and church work of Leevones G. Fisher of Mobile, Alabama. We don’t need to open libraries, stop gangs, install street lights or clean up abandoned parking lots like she did. But we can help bring people to God, invite to church and events, and volunteer in some way for Country Fair. The money raised helps people throughout the world.

Respectfully submitted by Beth Husom
