You follow a long line of distinguished auxiliary bishops here: Bishops Raymondo Pena, Charles Grahmann, Ricardo Ramirez, Bernard Popp, Edmund Carmody, Joseph Galante, John Yanta, Thomas Flanagan, Patrick Zurek, and Oscar Cantú. Our beloved Archbishop Patrick Flores was also an auxiliary bishop here before being appointed bishop of El Paso and then archbishop of San Antonio. Msgr. Mike, we gather this afternoon with your family and friends -- old friends who have supported you in the past and new ones whom you will love and serve as a bishop and who have already reached out to you with prayerful support. In particular, I mention your dear Mother, who is with us today -- supporting you as she has done for all of your life. I also welcome Archbishop Christophe Pierre, apostolic nuncio and representative of Pope Francis -- my brother archbishops and bishops -- esteemed ecumenical and interfaith leaders -- 1 2 representatives of the civic community -- priests, religious, permanent deacons, faithful of the Archdiocese of San Antonio. I am personally delighted that you will be my neighbor, living right next door to me . in more ways than one! We all ask God to bless you abundantly and send his Holy Spirit upon you today and always! As you know, each day you will need to rely on God -- Father, Son, and Holy Spirit – in ever new ways -- in your new office as a bishop! Welcome, everyone to this moment of God’s love for us! .

Fully Catholic (ecclesial maturity) and Fully Charismatic The Second Vatican Council taught that the Church is both hierarchical and charismatic (Lumen Gentium, 4). In Catholic Charis- matic Renewal we embrace and celebrate the role of the hierarchy (pope, bishops, priests, deacons), the importance of the Magis- terium (teaching authority of the pope and bishops), and the charismatic dimension of the Church in which the Holy Spirit continues to impart his gifts to every member of the Church for the building up of the Body of Christ, evangelization and service.
