Wie auch die Oper war die Oratorienproduktion in Wien von ihren Anfängen unter Kaiserin Eleonora Gonzaga II. um 1640 eine vorwiegend höfische Gat- tung. Vor allem die Aufführungen der Fastenoratorien, die in Wien zur speziellen Form des Sepolcro modifiziert wurden, verliefen ab 1660 in streng geregelten Bahnen: „Jährlich wird am Gründonnertag in der Kapelle Eleonoras II. eines ihres Kapellmeisters gegeben – natürlich nur bis in ihr Todesjahr 1686 –, am Karfreitag dann ein weiteres vom kaiserlichen Maestro di cappella oder von sei- nem Stellvertreter in der Hofburgkapelle.“1 Ab dem Tod Eleonoras wurde nur noch ein Sepolcro pro Fastenzeit aufgeführt, nach dem Tod Leopolds änderte sich der Charakter des Sepolcro solcherart, dass von einem Sepolcro im engeren Sinn nicht mehr gesprochen werden kann: Das Sepolcro verlor seine Charakteristika und näherte sich dem Oratorium an2 – nur der Aufführungsort blieb der selbe: die Hofburgkapelle.     HAYDN’S DRAMATIC DISSONANCES: CHROMATICISM AND FORMAL PROCESS IN HIS STRING QUARTETS, OPP. 9 AND 17 A Dissertation Presented to the Faculty of the Graduate School of Cornell University in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy by Adem Merter Birson January 2015 © 2015 Adem Merter Birson HAYDN’S DRAMATIC DISSONANCES: CHROMATICISM AND FORMAL PROCESS IN HIS STRING QUARTETS, OPP. 9 AND 17 Adem Merter Birson, Ph.D. Cornell University 2015 Most scholarship on the string quartets of Joseph Haydn favors the music he composed from Op. 33 (1781), citing evolutionary progress in his style according to limited criteria, such as voice equality and formal symmetry. Looking beyond this historical narrative, I examine Haydn’s compositions from the 1760s-70s in greater detail, focusing on the string quartets, Opp. 9 and 17 (1769-71). In these quartets, I investigate how destabilizing shifts to the parallel minor, bold chromatic gestures, and passages of intense chromatic voice-leading are used to disrupt the phrasing and heighten the tension of sonata-form movements, treating chromaticism under the rubric of form-generating dissonance. In so doing, I deemphasize traditional definitions of “sonata form”—long recognized as inadequate for describing Haydn’s approach—in favor of highlighting the role of dissonance in the expansion from smaller song and dance forms into larger vehicles for dramatic expression; I have termed this the sonata style. In the sonata style of Opp. 9 and 17, Haydn employs chromatic harmony and voice-leading especially during the act of initial modulation, prolonging the phrasing of his expositions and elevating the musical discourse from simple courtly song and dance to dynamic and psychological tonal process.

    MUSICOLOGICA BRUNENSIA 49, 2014, 1 DOI: 10.5817/MB2014-1-14 RAFFAELE MELLACE FROM COURT CHAPEL TO PUBLIC CONCERT: HASSE’S ORATORIOS FROM DRESDEN TO VIENNA1 In the early 1770s Johann Adolf Hasse proposed two of his oratorios, origi- nally conceived decades earlier, for the Court Chapel of King August III in Dres- den, as productions of the Wiener Tonkünstlersozietät, a society for the support of musicians’ widows, founded in 1771 by Florian Leopold Gassmann. They were meant to be performed at the Kärntnertortheater in Vienna in the same series of concerts which would have hosted Haydn’s first oratorio, Il ritorno di Tobia. In order to fulfil this commitment, Hasse even postponed his long-cherished plans to move to Venice together with his family for six months. He accepted that pro- posal coming directly from count Johann Wenzel Sporck, “Musique Cavalier und General-Direktor” of the court theaters, in the following mood: “Con tutto che come forestiero, e che è alla vigilia di lasciar il paese, io non ci entro per niente, si ha desiderato un oratorio da me. S. E.     Bearding Ritter von Köchel in His Lair* NEAL ZASLAW As editor of the next iteration of the Köchel Catalogue, I have to deal with the current (sixth) edition’s Appendix C, devoted to “Doubtful and Misattributed Works.”1 My goal is to reduce the potentially vast dimensions of that appendix to only those works for which some connection to Mozart cannot be ruled out. In the decades since 1964, when the current edition of Köchel was published, many of the works listed in Appendix C have been convincingly attributed to other composers. Other works therein can confidently be dismissed as never having had any meaningful connection to Mozart. Yet even after removing the reattributed and trivially misattributed works from the appendix, we are left with a handful of works that may possibly have had something to do with Mozart, even if clear evidence one way or the other remains elusive. One must, of course, be cautious in removing questionable and doubtful works from the catalogue, as the present case-study will illustrate. The work under consideration, catalogued as K6 Anh.
