Canadian Guiding Badges And Insignia Brownie Six/Circle Emblems Following the introduction of the Brownie program to provide Guiding for younger girls, and after the decision to base the new program on The Brownie Story, a further decision was made in 1919 to subdivide a Brownie Pack into smaller groups consisting of six girls. These smaller groups within the Pack were known as Sixes and were identified by a Six emblem bearing the name of some mythical fairy- like person from folklore. [Reference: POR (British, 1919)] The original Six emblems were brown felt; later versions were brown cotton with the edges bound in brown. In 1995, the term “Sixes” was replaced by the term “Circles”, and the shape of the emblems was changed as well. In 1972, three of the original twelve Six emblems were retired and in 1995 four new ones were added. After the ‘discovery’ of African pygmies in the 1860s, little people became a powerful way of imaginatively connecting to an inconceivably distant past, and the place of humans within it. Little people in fin de siècle narratives have been commonly interpreted as atavistic, stunted warnings of biological reversion. I suggest that there are other readings available: by deploying two nineteenth-century anthropological theories – E. B. Tylor’s doctrine of ‘survivals’, and euhemerism, a model proposing that the mythology surrounding fairies was based on the existence of real ‘little people’ – they can also be read as positive symbols of the tenacity of the human spirit, and as offering access to a sacred, spiritual, or magic, world. -

Hardiman 2005 ABSTRACT This dissertation marks the first synthetic and contextual analysis of domestic sculpture for the whole of the Hellenistic period (323 BCE – 31 BCE). Prior to this study, Hellenistic domestic sculpture had been examined from a broadly literary perspective or had been the focus of smaller regional or site-specific studies. Rather than taking any one approach, this dissertation examines both the literary testimonia and the material record in order to develop as full a picture as possible for the location, function and meaning(s) of these pieces. The study begins with a reconsideration of the literary evidence. The testimonia deal chiefly with the residences of the Hellenistic kings and their conspicuous displays of wealth in the most public rooms in the home, namely courtyards and dining rooms. Following this, the material evidence from the Greek mainland and Asia Minor is considered. The general evidence supports the literary testimonia’s location for these sculptures. In addition, several individual examples offer insights into the sophistication of domestic decorative programs among the Greeks, something usually associated with the Romans. -
Folk Hinduism in West Bengal
1 Folk Hinduism in West Bengal In the rural areas of India, we see a variety of notions about the nature of gods and goddesses. They are not “high gods,” as we see in the pan-Indian brahmanical forms of Hinduism, but rather regional deities, intimately associated with villages and towns. Indeed, some would not be characterized as gods and goddesses by most people, for those supernatural entities given offerings and worship include ghosts, ancestors, water and plant essences, guardian spirits, and disease con- trollers. We see some overlap of tribal deities, the deities of non-Hindu or semi- Hindu villagers, with the village gods or gramadevatas of village Hinduism. These may be µeld or mountain spirits, or angry ghosts of women who died violent deaths. All of these may be seen in the large area of folk Hinduism. There is no sharp differentiation between the tribal deities, village deities, and gods and god- desses of brahmanical Hinduism. Rather than a polarity, we see a continuum, for these traditions worship many deities in common. Some themes that may be noted in the worship of folk gods and goddesses: Regionalism: These deities are associated with speciµc places, temples, µelds, and streams. The Kali of one village is not the same as the next village’s Kali. One Chandi gives good hunting, another Chandi cures disease. Goddesses are not pan-Indian; they are speciµc to a person’s tribal or caste group, ex- tended family, neighborhood, or village. Pragmatism: These deities are rarely worshiped in a spirit of pure and ab- stract devotion. -

It is venturesome to think that a coordination of words (philosophies are nothing more than that) can resemble the universe very much. Jorge Luis Borges: Labyrinths In the previous chapter we discussed certain events that took place during the period centered about the year 1600--events which turned out to be the opening guns in the Scientific Revolution. However, as a description of the Human Experience peculiar to that time, our story remains incomplete, for it lacks a vital ingredient. By way of analogy, consider a history of that same era, written a hundred years later, during the 18th century. It would have been a chronicle of popes and kings, and their battles, with an occasional genuflection to great literary works of the past, such as those of a Shakespeare or a Milton. History, then, is a matter of taste, a tale about what someone considered to be important. And the power structure of a civilization is always the principal patron of the historians, and therefore also the arbiter of taste. Since such an arrangement is, figuratively speaking, somewhat anaerobic, it might be useful to "challenge the dominant paradigm," thereby letting in some fresh air. Included in the following pages, are three instances of human experience that are clearly discordant with The Myth of Modern Civilization. There is no reason to believe that all of these testimonies were necessarily falsehoods. But first, in order to understand the background for these stories, we need to examine the events that took place in Italy as a result of the Protestant Reformation, which had begun in the year 1517. -
