Obituaries 2000S OBITUARIES 61 OBITUARIES Dr Ron Snaith, 1947-2000 The whole of the chemistry community, as well as Ron' s many friends and colleagues in his other spheres of life, were deeply shocked and saddened by his sudden death on New Year's Day. Ron had been diagnosed with a serious illness some little while before Christmas, and was fighting it with his normal resolve, humour and true 'Yorkshire grit', when he collapsed at home and died in Addenbrookes Hospital a few hours later. Ron leaves his wife, Jane, and two children, Tom and Katie. Jane works in the Department of Genetics, in Cambridge. Tom is in his final year at the University of Durham, reading Chemistry, and Katie is in her second year at the University of Newcastle, Northumbria. The thoughts of all who knew Ron and his family are with them at this very sad time. Ron was born in Kingston-upon-Hull in August 1947, and was fiercely proud of his Yorkshire heritage. Ron studied Chemistry at the University of Durham between 1965-1971, graduating with a 1st Class Honours Degree in 1968, and then going on to read for a PhD, in Pure Science, under the supervision of Professor Ken Wade, FRS. His PhD was in the general area of Main Group Co-ordination Chemistry with particular reference to the investigation of the nature of covalent bonding between organo-nitrogen ligands and metals and semi-metals. Once his thesis was completed Ron then embarked on a career in school teaching. He took a PGCE in the Department of Education at Durham, and then taught at the Durham Johnston Comprehensive School between 1972 and 1979, where he soon became Head of Chemistry. During his teaching career he kept in close touch with Professor Wade and they published a number of research papers together. His interest in chemical research, coupled with encouragement from many of his friends, who had identified his outstanding flair and enthusiasm for the subject at an early stage of his career, was instrumental in his return to university teaching and research. WADMORE, A.R.I.B.A. ALTHOUGH we may gain much, useful information from Lambard, Hasted, Furley, and others, who have written on this subject, yet I venture to think that there are historical points and features in connection with this building, and the remarkable mound within it, which will be found fresh and interesting. I propose therefore to give an account of the mound and castle, as far as may be from pre-historic times, in connection with the Lords of the Castle and its successive owners. THE MOUND. Some years since, Dr. Fleming, who then resided at the castle, discovered on the mound a coin of Con- stantine, minted at Treves. Few will be disposed to dispute the inference, that the mound existed pre- viously to the coins resting upon it. We must not, however, hastily assume that the mound is of Roman origin, either as regards date or construction. The numerous earthworks and camps which are even now to be found scattered over the British islands are mainly of pre-historic date, although some mounds may be considered Saxon, and others Danish. Many are even now familiarly spoken of as Caesar's or Vespa- sian's camps, like those at East Hampstead (Berks), Folkestone, Amesbury, and Bensbury at Wimbledon. Main scientific work Hajnal is best known for identifying, in a landmark 1965 paper at LSE [1] the historical pattern of marriage of northwest Europe in which people married late and many adults remained single. The geographical boundary of this unusual marriage pattern is now known as the Hajnal line. Private life He was, from 1950 until her death in 2008, married to Nina Lande, a German-born teacher. They had three daughters and a son.

    MARGARET NEWMAN : ELSIE WIDDOWSON Elsie Widdowson Pioneer of Nutritional Studies Born 1906 in Wallington Surrey, attended Sydenham County Grammar School Studied Chemistry at Imperial College, London and graduated with BSc in 1928 becoming one of the first women graduates of Imperial College.carrying out postgraduate work at The Dept of Plant Physiology, developing methods for separating and measuring the fructose, sucrose and hemicellulose of fruit. She measured changes in the carbohydrates in fruit from time it appeared on tree until it ripened. 1931 she received PhD in Chemistry for her thesis on the carbohydrate content of apples. Her main interest was the biochemistry of animals and humans. And together with Professor Dodds studied the metabolism of the kidneys and she received a doctorate from the Courtauld Institute. Elsie struggled to find a long term position, Dr Dodds suggested she consider specialising in dietetics, which she did learning about the composition of meat and fish and how cooking affected them. While studying industrial cooking techniques she teamed up with Robert McCance who was a junior doctor researching chemical effects of cooking as part of his research on the treatment of diabetes. Elsie pointed out a error in his analysis of the fructose content of fruit. They became scientific partners and worked together for 60 years until McCance died in 1993. They worked on the chemical composition of the human body and on the nutritional value of different flours used to make bread. Elsie with McCance also studied the impact of infant diet on human growth. They studied the effects from deficiencies of salt and water, and produced the first tables to compare the different nutritional content of foods before and after cooking.

This paper describes how in Britain the transformation came after the Second World War and was due largely to David Kendall and Maurice Bartlett who met and worked together in the war and afterwards worked on stochastic processes. Their interests later diverged and, while Bartlett stayed in applied probability, Kendall took an increasingly pure line. March 2020 Probability played no part in a respectable mathematics course, and it took a global conflict to change both British mathematics and D. G. Kendall. Kingman “Obituary: David George Kendall” Introduction In the twentieth century probability is said to have become a “respectable” or “bona fide” branch of mathematics, the transformation occurring at different times in different countries.1 In Britain it came after the Second World War with research on stochastic processes by Maurice Stevenson Bartlett (1910-2002; FRS 1961) and David George Kendall (1918-2007; FRS 1964).2 They also contributed as teachers, especially Kendall who was the “effective beginning of the probability tradition in this country”—his pupils and his pupils’ pupils are “everywhere” reported Bingham (1996: 185). Bartlett and Kendall had full careers—extending beyond retirement in 1975 and ‘85— but I concentrate on the years of setting-up, 1940-55.
