Wolf 8 This is the first volume of a projected series of volumes aimed at comparing the demographic regimes of two parts of Europe and China in late traditional times. This volume sets the theoretical stage by examining in detail John Hajnal’s grand comparison of marriage in Europe and “the rest of the world”.1 The volume is intended to introduce our efforts as the latest generation of research in the intel- lectual lineage founded by Thomas Malthus and developed by John Hajnal, E.A. Wrigley, and the less well-known Dutch sociologist E.W. Hofstee.2 We also acknowledge as our intellectual forebears two Chinese authors – Hung Liang-chi and Ma Yin-chu. In his essays “Reign of Peace” and “Livelihood” Hung antici- pated many of Malthus’ ideas and Ma brought them to bear on Chinese popula- tion thinking at a critical point in history.3 Our plan is to move from the general questions discussed in this volume to detailed empirical studies in volumes two, three, and four. Volume two will deal with fertility, volume three with marriage, and volume four with mortality. Additional volumes will deal with household structure, the life cycle, sibling position as a determinant of life courses, and inheritance customs and their influence on demographic processes. We also hope to include in the series trans- lations of important Dutch and Chinese sources and to reprint significant works that are neglected because of where and when they were originally published. We entitle the series “Life at the Extremes” for three reasons. The first is that we plan to compare populations that lived at the opposite ends of Eurasia and consequently developed radically different social forms; the second is that we plan to deal with the life course from birth to death and to include in our comparisons people at both ends of the social ladder; and the third is that in terms of the behaviors that define demography, China and Europe represented 1. Hung wrote his essays in 1793 – five years before the appearance of the first edition of Malthus’ Essay on Population. Ma wrote in the late 1950’s while serving as President of Peking University. two radically different adaptations. One was characterized by early and universal 9 marriage, high general fertility, low marital fertility, and high mortality; the other, by late marriage and a high celibacy rate, low general fertility, high mari- tal fertility, and, compared with most pre-modern populations, low mortality.4 One of our major goals will be to assess whether or not these two demographic regimes are best characterized as examples of what Thomas Malthus called “pre- ventive” and “positive” checks. The populations we compare are people born in the Netherlands in the years 1780-1870 and in Taiwan in the years 1860-1925. We choose these partic- ular populations because a large portion of their lives was recorded in detail in household registers established in the Netherlands in 1850 and in Taiwan in 1905.5 These registers record information that is accurate, detailed, and highly comparable. They are two of the best sources of individual demographic infor- mation in the world. They report not only the dates that mark the progress of the typical life course – birth, marriage, the births of children, and death – but also the dates of events that mark departures from the typical life course – adoption, divorce, and remarriage. They record who people married as well as when they married and who they were living with as well as where they were living. It is possible to determine for all events that occurred during the years covered by the registers the exact composition of the household in which the subject of the event was living. One can therefore evaluate the extent to which the vital events in people’s lives were influenced by events in the lives of their parents and sib- lings. The hallmark of the work published in this series will be studies that begin with individuals in particular contexts and build from there to comparisons of the populations of two very different societies. From an anthropological point of view, Taiwan and the Netherlands were radically different societies. Taiwan was part of the world’s most enduring tribu- tary state and exemplified in extreme form many of the characteristics of such states – a strictly patrilineal kinship system, an oppressive gender hierarchy, and generational relations that gave parents the ability to control their married as well as their unmarried children. The Netherlands, in contrast, was a parlia- mentary monarchy with a cognatic kinship system, relatively egalitarian gender relations, and generational relations that made it difficult for parents to arrange 4. There were, however, ways in which the two societies were more alike than is com- monly realized. These are important because they provide the common ground that allows us to identify the cause and consequences of the major differences. In the language of the laboratory, they are the experimental constants. One of these is the fact that during the years covered by our study, fertili- ty in both societies conformed to the pattern Louis Henry calls “natural fertility”. There was no birth control and no general desire for birth control. In fact, the cultures of both countries can be characterized as strongly pro-natalist until well after the youngest of our subjects were born. According to the standard set by the Princeton Fertility Project,6 the Dutch fertility transition began in 1899 and the Taiwanese fertility transition in the 1960s. Thus in both cases the births of our youngest subjects preceeded the beginning of the fertility transition by several decades. A second common feature of the two societies during the years that con- cern us is their mixed economies. Despite the fact that the Netherlands is gen- erally viewed as “the first modern economy”, the great majority of the population depended on agriculture until well into the 20th century. In 1850 when the last of our subjects was born 40 percent of all Dutch families were farmers, in rural areas more than 50 percent.

Abstract This thesis examines the phenomenon of childlessness and its manifestation across Europe in association with ideas of Hajnal's west and east division of Europe. I explore whether other potentially correlated factors explain this division. Specifically, contextual factors such as accession to the European Union or individual factors such as educational level or values associated with the Second Demographic Transition may explain the association with the Hajnal line. The data set used for analysis comes from World Values Survey 6 and stepwise logistic regression was used on women born 1959-1975. Results revealed that Hajnal's East and West division of Europe matters in terms of childlessness, and belonging to Western Europe increases the odds of staying childless, yet, the association between childlessness and European Union membership is robust, as well. Hajnal indicator appeared to absorb the difference in childlessness related to traditional values adherence, while positive association between tertiary education and childlessness revealed to be more robust in all contexts. The models have shown that accession with European Union is positively associated with childlessness and societies of EU are more likely to stay childless. The study has shown that a clear geographical or regional difference in childlessness can be identified, but whether it is related to cultural factors discussed by Hajnal or the developments related to EU accession is still not clear.

The aim of the study is to compare the entry into first conjugal union in Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania, and analyze the position of the Baltic countries in a broader European perspective. The analyses employ microdata from national surveys conducted in the framework of the European Family and Fertility Surveys program. Our main results on the timing and mode of union formation show that in Estonia and Latvia the shift from direct marriage to cohabitation started well before the fall of the state socialist regime, and followed a trajectory close to Scandinavian countries. In Lithuania, on the other hand, the change in the pattern of union formation has been much slower. The paper discusses the factors underlying the observed similarities and dissimilarities in union formation. Chris Tencza and Thomas Anderson Population Studies Center University of Pennsylvania BACKGROUND Conceived in 1965, the “Hajnal line” has been one of the most theoretically important and commonly cited concepts in European family demography. Running diagonally through Europe from St. Petersburg to Trieste, the imaginary line illustrates the centuries-old geographic division in European marriage patterns. Hajnal observed that until the 1940s, late and non- universal marriage had prevailed in Northwestern Europe for centuries while marriage in Southern and Eastern European countries had remained early and near-universal (Hajnal 1965). Hajnal's dichotomization of marriage patterns in Europe has since manifested itself in more complex frameworks on family formation. Drawing on the Hajnal's ideas, Reher (1998) notes that “weak” family ties are characteristic of Northern and Western European countries while “strong” family ties are prevalent in Southern and Eastern Europe. He asserts that these family ties explain divergent patterns and norms regarding nuptiality, divorce, cohabitation, “nest leaving” (i.e., the age at which children leave their parental home), familial solidarity and intergenerational care. Others have taken Reher's conceptualization of “weak” and “strong” familism a step further, arguing that the former family regimes tend to have higher levels of gender equity, fertility, and individual autonomy than the latter (e.g., Billari and Wilson 2001; Anderson and Kohler 2013; Suzuki 2008; Dalla Zuanna and Micheli 2005). That geographic differences in family ties in Europe will eventually dissipate has been of topical debate in the literature. TRACY DENNISON AND SHEILAGH OGILVIE This article scrutinizes the recently postulated link between the European Marriage Pattern (EMP) and economic success. Multivariate analysis of 4,705 demographic observations, covering women’s marriage age, female lifetime celibacy, and household complexity in 39 European countries, shows that the most extreme manifestations of the EMP were associated with economic stagnation rather than growth. There is no evidence that the EMP improved economic performance by empowering women, increasing human capital investment, adjusting population to economic trends, or sustaining beneficial cultural norms. After a century of decline, marriage rates in Ireland appeared to turn a corner in the 1930s. This study examines this apparent period of transition using census data and finds that in reality marriage rates for men engaged in agriculture continued to decline at least until the middle of the twentieth century, and that when it came to the issue of marriage this sector diverged from the rest of the economy. These findings give us an important insight into the relationship between land, employment, and marriage in Ireland, and have interesting implications for parts of the world where the demographic transition is in its early stages.     Finnish Yearbook of Population Research XLVIII 2013, pp. 5–49 5 Partnership in Europe; its Variety, Trends and Dissolution A section of a work in progress DAVID COLEMAN, Oxford Centre for Population Research, Department of Social Policy and Intervention, University of Oxford Abstract Radical changes in living arrangements, in sexual habits and in the position of marriage in Europe have arisen, very unevenly, since the 1960s and in some regions in scarcely more than a decade. Cohabitation before marriage is normal – even universal – in many countries, with the popularity of marriage falling as its mean age rises to beyond the highest levels hitherto recorded. Divorce has been legalised and in most cases made readily accessible. However, although not as firm a demarcation as once believed, Hajnal’s line separating East and West has not yet been erased from the map of contemporary Europe. The article describes patterns and trends in partnership in Europe, including trends in marriage rates, divorce rates, the spread of cohabitation, LAT-relations and of births outside marriage, and tries to account for them. Key words: marriage, divorce, cohabitation, living apart together, births, Europe, second demographic transition Living together in Europe Almost all societies have an accepted institution, usually preceded by some rite de pas- sage, whereby couples are publicly acknowledged to have reached adulthood and to be living henceforth in an exclusive sexual – and economic – relationship, wherein children will be produced. Thereby sex is controlled and reproduction is licensed, parentage and lineage acknowledged and demonstrated, the community affirmed and augmented. Modern Europe has now devised several such ‘institutions’, some private, some public, none universally acknowledged, some only grudgingly so, some routinely officially recorded, others ill-defined or detectable only though surveys and self-definition, some not capable of producing children although increasingly encouraged to foster them.
