Album of the Week: Rhett Miller's the Traveler Album Of The Week: Rhett Miller’s The Traveler You might know him as the frontman of Dallas, Tex., alt- country trail blazers The Old 97’s, but Rhett Miller actually started as a solo artist with the release of Mythologies that he recorded as a 19-year-old kid in the late ’80s. He’s kept putting out his own records over the years, but his upcoming release of The Traveler has something pretty special about it. Along with Miller’s songwriting, he has Portland, Ore., bluegrass act Black Prairie (featuring The Decembrists’ Chris Funk and Nate Query) as his backing band and R.E.M’s Peter Buck and The Minus 5’s Scott McCaughey adding their impeccable skills on guitar. With this cavalcade of talent, The Traveler makes for an amazing album that any folk enthusiast, country honky-tonker or rambunctious rocker can appreciate. The energy and heart behind each track really makes Miller’s new album a musical treasure; each tells a story as you’re engulfed by the rhythms and lyrics. You can definitely feel Black Prairie’s presence all over the album with a lot of fiddle and banjo action accompanying Rhett and his six-string. It makes for a sound that at times is a bustling flurry, while other times makes a somber part of a ballad. With all of the variety and spectacular chord progressions, The Traveler has multiple dimensions. There’s nothing bland about it, which makes it a piece of music that’ll be difficult to put down. When you’re lounging on the porch and relaxing in the sun, wouldn’t you like to listen to a cool record to stimulate your senses? Well, that’s what I’m here for. Here are my top tracks off of the Album Of The Week. Sit back and enjoy after you press play: Starting off the album in full force, “Wanderlust” kicks things into high gear with Miller’s feverish strumming going with a rhythmic barrage of violins, drums and electric guitar riffs. A laid-back song that puts you in the mood for warm weather, “Most In The Summertime” is an ode to summer love for anyone who’s lucky enough to experience such a thing. Another great ditty is “Lucky Star,” a true testament to Miller’s magnificent songwriting; it’s about missing someone who’s far away and looking to the sky, knowing they’re always with you. Rhett Miller will perform at Johnny D’s Uptown Restaurant & Music Club in the Boston suburb of Somerville, Mass. on May 13 for what should be a great night in an intimate setting. While you’re there, you should pick up a copy of The Traveler since it’ll be officially released the day before the show on May 12. It’s genuinely wonderful music that’ll take your mind and imagination places it’s never been. Listen to “Most In The Summertime” here: soundcloud.com/ato_records/03-most-in-the-summertime.

  • "Rock and Roll's Been Very Very Good to Me," Rhett Miller Sings On
"Rock and roll's been very very good to me," Rhett Miller sings on "Longer Than You've Been Alive," an epic six-minute stream-of-consciousness meditation on his life in music. It's a rare moment of pulling back the curtain, on both the excesses and tedium of the world of a touring musician, and it's the perfect way to open the Old 97's new album, 'Most Messed Up.' "I wrote that song very quickly and didn’t rewrite one word of it," Miller explains. "It's sort of a thesis statement not just for this record, but for my life's work." To say that rock and roll has been good to the Old 97's (guitarist/vocalist Miller, bassist/vocalist Murry Hammond, guitarist Ken Bethea, and drummer Philip Peeples) would be an understatement. The band emerged from Dallas twenty years ago at the forefront of a musical movement blending rootsy, country-influenced songwriting with punk rock energy and delivery. The New York Times has described their major label debut, 'Too Far To Care,' as "a cornerstone of the 'alternative country' movement…[that] leaned more toward the Clash than the Carter Family." They've released a slew of records since then, garnering praise from NPR and Billboard to SPIN and Rolling Stone, who hailed the band as "four Texans raised on the Beatles and Johnny Cash in equal measures, whose shiny melodies, and fatalistic character studies, do their forefathers proud." The band performed on television from Letterman to Austin City Limits and had their music appear in countless film and TV soundtracks (they appeared as themselves in the Vince Vaughn/Jennifer Aniston movie 'The Break Up').

  • Jacknife Lee
Jacknife Lee It is fair to say that Jacknife Lee has become one of the most sought after and highly influential producers currently at work. Lee’s career has encompassed work with some of the biggest and most influential artists on both sides of the Atlantic in the shape of Taylor Swift, U2, R.E.M., Kasabian, Robbie Williams and Neil Diamond. His work on U2’s “How To Dismantle An Atom Bomb” saw him collect two Grammy Awards in 2006 as well as Producer of the Year at the UK MMF Awards. He was also again Grammy nominated in 2013 for his work on Swift’s multi-million selling album “Red.” Currently working on what looks set to be the biggest album from Scottish alt-rock heroes Twin Atlantic and the debut album from The Gossip’s Beth Ditto, Lee has also produced a handful of tracks on Jake Bugg’s upcoming third album and is just about to commence work with Two Door Cinema Club after their successful collaboration on Beacon two years previously. In 2014, Lee was honoured to be asked to co-produce Neil Diamond’s “Melody Road” album alongside the tremendously talented Don Was. “Melody Road” debuted at #3 in America and #4 in the UK as it received universal critical acclaim. Lee has gained much recognition as a writer producer over the last five years. In 2014 also Lee co write and produced various singles for Kodaline’s second album “Coming Up For Air” which peaked at #2, while he also produced and co-wrote Twin Atlantic’s Radio 1 A-listed singles “Heart and Soul” and “Brothers and Sisters.” In addition, Lee spent some of the year writing and producing track for alternative urban artist Raury.

Regardless of what your opinion about R.E.M. is, there's no denying that they shaped the face of alternative rock for years. Heck, they've basically been every kind of alternative rock band themselves. They spent their formative years as cult favorite college rockers. Then, they started attracting more and more attention until they were making music with genuine mainstream appeal. Between 1991 and 1992 alone, they released the folk- inspired Out of Time and the baroque Automatic For The People, making them easily the most successful band to attack the audiences of the early grunge era with both mandolins ("Losing My Religion") and string arrangements (A good chunk of Automatic ).
