Each state‘s relative share of these programs is described. The geographic themes, patterns, and images from these programs are analyzed, with an emphasis on identity in five American regions: the Mid-Atlantic, New England, the Midwest, the South, and the West. The dissertation concludes with a comparison of television‘s senses of place to those described in previous studies of regional identity. iii For Sue iv CONTENTS List of Tables vi Acknowledgments vii 1. ABRACADABRA: KEY AGENTS OF MEDIATION THAT DEFINE, CREATE, AND MAINTAIN TV FANDOM by DAVID H. GARDNER Under the Direction of Dr. Alisa Perren ABSTRACT From a media industries, fan studies, and emerging socio-cultural public relations perspective, this project pulls back the Hollywood curtain to explore two questions: 1) How do TV public relations practitioners and key tastemaker/gatekeeper media define, create, build, and maintain fandom?; and 2) How do they make meaning of fandom and their agency/role in fan creation from their position of industrial producers, cultural intermediaries, members of the audience, and as fans themselves? This project brings five influential, working public relations and media professionals into a conversation about two case studies from the 2010-2011 television season – broadcast network CBS’ Hawaii Five-0 and basic cable network AMC’s The Walking Dead. Each of these shows speaks to fandom in particular ways and are representative of the industry’s current approaches in luring specific audiences to TV. -
Why Real Life Isn't Like Hawaii Five-O
Why Real Life Isn't Like Hawaii Five-O Dr. Robert K. Bitting The other night, my wife woke me up in the middle of the night complaining that I was singing in my sleep. I was singing the Hawaii Five-O theme song - arguably one of the catchiest theme songs in television history, by the way. I've been watching old re-runs of the show lately (obsessively, according to my wife), and that particular night it was the last thing I watched on TV before falling asleep - which only partially explains why I woke up singing. But there's more to it than that, and I think it has something to do with power, leadership, and the way that things work in the real world, especially at work. So, with apologies to Jack Lord (the actor who portrays Steve McGarrett), here's why real life could never be like Hawaii Five-O: - McGarrett is everywhere, all the time. He always arrives moments after the crime has been committed, and is always there at the end when the criminal is arrested. Although most bosses think that they possess the skill of omnipresence, they don't. Thank God, because this would be a nightmare for the employees who know what they're doing and don't need someone looking over their shoulders every minute. - There is only one crime at a time in Hawaii, so it is easy for McGarrett to give it his total attention. No one commits a new crime until the old one is completely solved. How many of us get to deal with only one problem at a time? - McGarrett's staff is unconditionally loyal, trustworthy, hard-working, and efficient. -

Dissertation Advisor: Professor Orlando Patterson Author: Rupert Russell Dying of Encouragement: From Pitch to Production in Hollywood Abstract Social scientists have long held that the media has a profound effect on modern societies. However, the cultural production of motion pictures and television shows has largely been neglected as a topic of inquiry. The following dissertation seeks to fill this lacuna in the current research by offering a systematic, comprehensive, and comparative analysis of the industry known colloquially as “Hollywood.” Specifically, this dissertation seeks to uncover the matrix of causal processes that filter the infinite array of potential television shows and motion pictures to the chosen few that are selected for production. This process is known as “development and green lighting.” Drawing from 110 interviews with writers, directors, producers, agents, managers, studio executives, network executives, financiers, and assistants who had been involved in the development and green lighting process, I explore not just decision making but the social milieu within which those decisions were made. -
