  • A Cornerstone of the Historical Landscape
Stourbridge's Western Boundary: A cornerstone of the historical landscape by K James BSc(Hons) MSc PhD FIAP (email: [email protected]) The present-day administrative boundaries around Stourbridge are the result of a long and complex series of organizational changes, land transfers and periods of settlement, invasion and warfare dating back more than two thousand years. Perhaps the most interesting section of the boundary is that to the west of Stourbridge which currently separates Dudley Metropolitan Borough from Kinver in Staffordshire. This has been the county boundary for a millennium, and its course mirrors the outline of the medieval manors of Oldswinford and Pedmore; the Domesday hundred of Clent; Anglo-Saxon royal estates, the Norman forest of Kinver and perhaps the 7th-9th century Hwiccan kingdom as well as post-Roman tribal territories. The boundary may even have its roots in earlier (though probably more diffuse) frontiers dating back to prehistoric times. Extent and Description As shown in figure 1, the boundary begins at the southern end of County Lane near its junction with the ancient road (now just a rough public footpath) joining Iverley to Ounty John Lane. It follows County Lane north-north-west, crosses the A451 and then follows the line of Sandy Lane (now a bridleway) to the junction of Sugar Loaf Lane and The Broadway. Along with County Lane, this section of Sandy Lane lies upon a first-century Roman road that connected Droitwich (Salinae) to the Roman encampments at Greensforge near Ashwood. Past Sugar Loaf Lane, the line of the boundary diverges by a few degrees to the east of the Roman road, which continues on in a straight line under the fields of Staffordshire towards Newtown Bridge and Prestwood.

  • XIX.—Reginald, Bishop of Bath (Hjjfugi); His Episcopate, and His Share in the Building of the Church of Wells. by the Rev. C. M
XIX.—Reginald, bishop of Bath (HJJfUgi); his episcopate, and his share in the building of the church of Wells. By the Rev. C. M. CHURCH, M.A., F.8.A., Sub-dean and Canon Residentiary of Wells. Read June 10, 1886. I VENTURE to think that bishop Eeginald Fitzjocelin deserves a place of higher honour in the history of the diocese, and of the fabric of the church of Wells, than has hitherto been accorded to him. His memory has been obscured by the traditionary fame of bishop Robert as the "author," and of bishop Jocelin as the "finisher," of the church of Wells; and the importance of his episcopate as a connecting link in the work of these two master-builders has been comparatively overlooked. The only authorities followed for the history of his episcopate have been the work of the Canon of Wells, printed by Wharton, in his Anglia Sacra, 1691, and bishop Godwin, in his Catalogue of the Bishops of England, 1601—1616. But Wharton, in his notes to the text of his author, comments on the scanty notice of bishop Reginald ;a and Archer, our local chronicler, complains of the unworthy treatment bishop Reginald had received from Godwin, also a canon of his own cathedral church.b a Reginaldi gesta historicus noster brevius quam pro viri dignitate enarravit. • Stone Family Documents the Stones of Chipstable, Somerset
1 STONE FAMILY DOCUMENTS THE STONES OF CHIPSTABLE, SOMERSET These family documents were found in the estate of Elizabeth Boyd Bond Evans of Cambridge, England (deceased December 2012). They were obtained at auction at Cheffins of Cambridge for John C. Stone II by Elizabeth Howard in July 2013. Most of the documents relate to descendants of Richard Stone of Clayhanger, Devon and Chipstable, Somerset, who died in 1653. Richard’s estimated date of birth is late 1570s, e.g. 1579. His will was obtained from the UK Archives and names his descendants. The will of the widow of his eldest son John (Richord Parkhouse Stone) also was obtained from the UK Archives and helps define some of Richard’s descendants. Richard was married twice. The name of his first wife, whom he married about 1600, remains unknown. Six children were born to this first marriage, of whom four married and three produced heirs. The two female lines of descent have been difficult to establish, but the lone male heir who had offspring, Emanuel Stone, had nine or ten children. The line of descent from Emanuel’s oldest son and heir, Richard Stone 1640 (baptized in Chipstable), can be traced to the present day. The absence of 16c parish records and paucity of 17c records in Chipstable and Ashbrittle (due in large part to the civil war of the 17c) have made it impossible to determine accurately the lines of Emanuel’s other eight or nine children with any accuracy. Richard’s second marriage was prior to 1640 to a woman named Eleanor (possibly Eleanor Farthinge who was born in Clayhanger in 1604).
