Camel Dive Club: “Sharm El Sheikh Heeft 05.11.2020 Camel Dive Club: "Sharm El Sheikh heeft een prachtige diversiteit aan duikplekken." - Duiken Magazine NIEUWS RODE ZEE Camel Dive Club: “Sharm El Sheikh heeft een prachtige diversiteit aan duikplekken.” De Camel Dive Club bestond in 1986 uit een bescheiden stenen gebouw van één verdieping met een met palmbomen bedekte binnenplaats wat het duikcentrum voorstelde. Enkele strohutten wat diende als ‘hotel’, een watertank en een compressor. Wij spraken Amy Oxtoby van Camel Dive Club & Hotel over de groei en de prachtige duik ervaringen die ze al heeft mogen meemaken in Sharm el Sheikh. Kun je iets vertellen over je geschiedenis van Camel Dive? Het idee voor Camel Dive Club begon toen Hesham Gabr begin jaren tachtig met vrienden Naama Bay bezocht. Geïnspireerd door de levensstijl van de duikpioniers van Sinai, culmineerde het project in 1986 met de opening van de Camel Dive Club. Camel Dive Club is de afgelopen 20 jaar enorm gegroeid. Het is nu een PADI vijfsterren Instructor Development Dive Resort en een TDI technische duikfaciliteit. De originele stenen muren van het duikcentrum zijn bewaard gebleven. Camel Dive Club & Hotel bevindt zich nu in het hart van het voetgangersgebied van Na’ama Bay. Sharm el Sheikh en Camel Dive Club zijn de afgelopen 30 jaar enorm veranderd. Maar Camel’s losoe is nog steeds hetzelfde. Als duikers onszelf hebben we ons altijd gericht op het bieden van wat duikers willen: faciliteiten van topkwaliteit, vriendelijke duikgidsen en fantastisch duiken. Een alles-in-één ervaring op maat; het boetiekhotel, lekker eten en uitstekende duikdiensten gecombineerd op een van de meest ongelooijke en diverse duiklocaties ter wereld. Wat voor soort duiken bieden jullie aan? We bieden zowel duiken als snorkelen per boot voor alle duikplekken. Inclusief de Straat van Tiran, Ras Mohammed National Park en lokale locaties. Golvende koraaltuinen, dramatische wallduiken, driftduiken naar oorlogswrakken. Wrakduikexcursies naar de SS Dunraven en de SS Thistlegorm vertrekken vanaf de steiger in Sharm El Sheikh, op ongeveer vijftien minuten afstand. Anderen lezen ook: Stem voor een Europa zonder haaienvinnenhandel De Straat van Tiran biedt het grootste wrak van de Rode Zee, genaamd The Million Hope. Met een lengte van bijna 200 meter ligt dit scheepswrak zeer dicht bij de oppervlakte, er kan alleen worden gedoken als de omstandigheden op zee gunstig zijn. We organiseren speciale dagtochten van Sharm naar de beroemdste locaties in Dahab; de Canyon en de Blue Hole. Dit zijn beide kantduiken met een zeer ongebruikelijke topograe. Zowel de Canyon en de Blue Hole zijn de thuisbasis van vissen die zelden worden gezien rond Sharm, zoals de Red Sea Walkman en zeepaardjes. We bieden ook kantduiken aan vanaf ons huisrif in Naama Bay. Dit is perfect voor cursussen, checkduiken en voor de duikers die hun tijd willen nemen met fotograe of een leuke gemakkelijke duik willen aan het begin of einde van hun reis. Ja, ons huisrif bestaat uit een licht golvende zandbodem met koraalpieken, zeegras, veel zeeleven en gemakkelijke toegang vanaf ons duikcentrum in Naama Bayons. De perfecte activiteit voor diegenen die niet genoeg tijd hebben om te genieten van een volledige dagtrip of mensen die voor het eerst duikers in de Rode Zee. Je kunt begeleide kantduiken maken vanaf ons huisrif in Naama Bay. Deze duikstek zal je verrassen met onverwachte bezienswaardigheden, zowel overdag als ‘s nachts. Wat zijn de 2 populairste duikplekken die je kan bezoeken? De Ras Mohammed & The Straits of Tiran zijn de meest populaire en bekende duik- / snorkelplekken in Sharm El Sheikh. Het Nationale park Ras Mohammed werd in 1983 een beschermd gebied. Het bevat spectaculaire duiklocaties, waarvan er verschillende worden beschouwd als een van de top 10 duiken wereldwijd. Duiklocaties hier bieden een overvloed aan harde en zachte koralen en prachtig onderwaterleven. Vooral in de zomer trekt het gebied paaischolen met pelagische vissen aan. Ook zijn veel van de stranden van het park broedplaatsen voor schildpadden. De Straat strekt zich uit van Ras Ghamila op het vasteland tot Jackson Reef. Het meest bekend om 4 oshore-rien die zijn vernoemd naar de Britse cartografen Gordon, Thomas, Woodhouse en Jackson uit de 19e eeuw. Water dat door de Straat loopt, kan sterke stromingen veroorzaken, wat leidt tot spannende driftduiken. Een enorme verscheidenheid aan koraal- en zeeleven gedijen in het voedselrijke water. Wat was je eigen meest memorabele duik? Er zijn te veel onvergetelijke momenten geweest tijdens duiken in de Rode Zee. Ras Mohammed heeft me honderden spinnerdoljnen gegeven die voorbij schoten op Ras Ghozlani. Walvishaaien die als eerste uit de diepe muur van Shark Reef komen, enorme zwartpunthaaien die jagen in een Barracuda- cycloon op het Yolanda-rif. Duizenden papegaaivissen die als één groot organisme op Ras Zatar bewegen, jagende zeilvissen en Giant Trevally die de blauwe zee overnemen op Shark Observatory. The Straits of Tiran heeft me zover het oog reikt geschulpte hamerhaaien gegeven, schildpadden die paren op Jackson Reef, thresher Sharks en hondstonijnen met ogen zo groot als schoteltjes op Thomas Reef, Antennariidae die zich verstopten op sponzen en enorme adelaarsroggen die dansen in de koraaltuinen van Gordon. De lokale sites hebben me gezegend met mobula’s, oceanische witpunthaai, walvishaaien die zich voeden aan een enorme aasbal en manta roggen die gewoon langskomen om hallo te zeggen terwijl je aan het snorkelen bent. Naaktslak soorten en jonge vissen die je door identicatieboeken doet bladeren, en enkele van de meest verbluende koraalformaties die ik ooit heb gezien. Er is niet één gedenkwaardige duik voor mij, maar vele once in a lifetime ervaringen die me zeer bevoorrecht laten voelen om hier op het juiste moment op de juiste plek te zijn geweest in Sharm El Sheikh met Camel Dive Club. I remember doing a night dive on the Thistlegorm which was just fantastic it was pitch black with pin points of light from fellow divers lights.In the south, Peter, Tom and myself went looking for the wreck of the Maidan on Rocky Island, we followed the debris trail down to 65mtrs and there before us was the huge shadow of the wreck hanging over the abyss starting at 80 mtrs. We could only look down in wonder, but we had found what we were looking for after 10 years. Peter's trips are a must and very much like his trips his books are a must read, Peter is a walking encyclopaedia on all things diving and ship wrecks.

Robin was a tireless advocate for nature conservation and the natural environment holding positions in both the Pembrokeshire National Park Authority and the Countryside Council for Wales (CCW) (formally NCC). He had a particular passion for marine mammals and was one of the instigators in 1975 calling for a West Wales Grey Seal Census. I first met Robin in the late 1980s when he freely offered support of boat and equipment storage at his farm in Fishguard when the newly formed CCW let one of its first contracts, the West Wales Grey Seal Census. I can remember many a dark cold late wintry evening returning back to store the boat only to be met by Robin presenting each of us with a glass of single malt whiskey to try and revive our cold tired bodies. Robin, his daughters and son in law continued their support of the Marine Mammal Strandings Programme in Wales through the 1990s to the present day, without whose help it would probably not be what it is today. Old enough to see Louis Bleriot land his aircraft in Britain on the first flight across the channel, attending the same school as Charlie Chaplin (although Chaplin was older) and as he moved into adulthood, he began his military career, firstly belonging to a London regiment of the British Territorials1 achieving the rank of Lance Corporal, then joining the Royal Navy as a regular in early 1914 and trained as a Cook, achieving the Petty Officer rank of Cook’s Mate. During WWI the Minesweeper HMS RODEAN he was serving on was sunk tied up alongside in Gibraltar Harbour by a Destroyer which had dragged its anchor during a storm. He then served on another Minesweeper HMS WHITBY ABBEY2 which was heavily engaged in the Gallipoli Campaign where his ship was sunk by Turkish shell fire from the shore. He then moved on to the Mystery Ship HMS HYDERABAD, about which a large part of this article is devoted. After WWI he served on HMS MEDWAY a destroyer which had been converted to survey work. The two sinkings he had received led to lung problems and his honourable discharge on medical ground. He was advised by his doctors to seek a drier climate than England and so emigrated to Australia with his family in 1926.

It was archive photographs from Howard Rosenstien and the location of the ships bell, which added weight to Stephan Jablonski’s accounts of the sinkings’. This new material gave us enough to produce the first E book in 2008. Being free from restrictions it soon found its way around the world and was passed on from diver to diver. It had the desired effect-Now more and more reports carry the correct identity.
