" Yes, very lucky, I thought as I watched this charming young man who obviously was enjoying the attention directed his way. With a wink and a wave, he struggled from the wheelchair to the car, and we were on our way. "Well, Terry, did your life flash in front of you as you hit the truck?" I asked laughingly. "Nope," came his quick reply. Hurrying back to the shop, I arrived just in time to help a grieving family select funeral flowers. "My heart is with you in your sorrow," I automatically voiced as I turned the pages in the sympathy selection guidebook. Another telephone call Another telephone call two weeks later, on a lazy Sunday afternoon, informed my husband that Terry had been hit again on his motorcycle. With aching fear and disbelief I dialed the hospital, demanding to know the extent of his injuries, since we live 30 miles from town and I needed to know more fully what had happened. No information was supplied, and no, I could not speak to a physician, for they were busy with our son. An emergency-room superintendent suggested that we should come as quickly as possible, for Terry's condition was critical. The drive to the hospital was the longest ride I have ever experienced. Cries, tears, and prayers were all intermingled as I bargained with God. "Don't let him die, please God. I'll do anything, just don't let him die. 6 (590) ADVENTIST REVIEW, JUNE 24, 1982 Brother Cain

By JOSE HURTADO

Cain wanted to obey God providing that he still could have his own way. It was as though he was saying that what he was doing was right because his own work had merit. He wanted to be saved by his own doings, without depending upon what God offered. He refused to acknowledge that he was a sinner who needed a personal Saviour. Cain's offering was bloodless. So it did not conform to the divine rule: "And almost all things are by the law purged with blood; and without shedding of blood is no remission" (Heb. 9:22). Cain recognized the existence and power of God and wanted his offering to express that recognition. But he wanted to offer only on his own terms. When his worthless, unacceptable worship brought no visible recognition from God a fearful rage engulfed him. He was not infuriated with himself, but with his brother and even God. He hardened his heart and declared himself to be in open rebellion. People who do wrong become angry as a consequence.
