Jimmy Raney Thesis: Blurring the Barlines By: Zachary Streeter A Thesis submitted to the Graduate School-Newark Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey In partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Jazz History and Research Graduate Program in Arts written under the direction of Dr. Lewis Porter and Dr. Henry Martin And approved by Newark, New Jersey May 2016 ©2016 Zachary Streeter ALL RIGHT RESERVED ABSTRACT Jimmy Raney Thesis: Blurring the Barlines By: Zach Streeter Thesis Director: Dr. Lewis Porter Despite the institutionalization of jazz music, and the large output of academic activity surrounding the music’s history, one is hard pressed to discover any information on the late jazz guitarist Jimmy Raney or the legacy Jimmy Raney left on the instrument. Guitar, often times, in the history of jazz has been regulated to the role of the rhythm section, if the guitar is involved at all. While the scope of the guitar throughout the history of jazz is not the subject matter of this thesis, the aim is to present, or bring to light Jimmy Raney, a jazz guitarist who I believe, while not the first, may have been among the first to pioneer and challenge these conventions. I have researched Jimmy Raney’s background, and interviewed two people who knew Jimmy Raney: his son, Jon Raney, and record producer Don Schlitten. These two individuals provide a beneficial contrast as one knew Jimmy Raney quite personally, and the other knew Jimmy Raney from a business perspective, creating a greater frame of reference when attempting to piece together Jimmy Raney.

Again, there is a mixture of set-price and auction items. As usual, the set-price records can be ordered, paid for and sent to you now. Alternatively, the set-price items can be reserved and paid for at a later date, either when the auction closes or put aside and collected from an upcoming record fair (see below). Again, there is no LP auction this time; instead there is a larger modern jazz set-price list. Finally, I need to point out that 2020 may well be the last year that I send out such large lists. I am aiming to at least partially retire by the end of the year. This means that I want to sell large quantities of my remaining stock. I have now managed to sell most of my excess stock of 78s. However, if you, or anyone you know, are interested in buying a quantity of LPs, please get in touch. SEE YOU AT THE RECORD FAIR: For the first time for as long as I can remember, this regular feature of our lists is a blank. This is, of course, not through any dimunition in our enthusiam for such events but as a result of the current crisis we are all living through. At present the Utrecht Fair in November is still pencilled in but I fear, in the end, this event will go the same way as the one that should have been held in April.
