Photography is traditionally notorious for being an individual pursuit, evoking the stereotype of a lone figure peering behind a lens. But in the realm of contemporary photography, some photographers seem to be sharing a secret - that at least in the creative world, maybe two minds are better than one. Take the photography duo known as Mert and Marcus, where photographers Mert Alas and Marcus Piggott alternate between snapping shots while the other scans through the photos from a connected laptop. Since crossing paths in the ‘90s, the pair have become famous for their glossy, powerful shots of female icons and extensive fashion campaign roster. The duo’s final photos are attributed to both photographers and they aren’t the only power team in the fashion photography game.

The Dutch duo of Inez van Lamsweerde and Vindooh Matadin (professionally known as Inez and Vindooh) represent another collaborative venture in fashion photography, as well as the creativity that comes out of it. The couple uses a method slightly different from Mert and Marcus - instead of photographing separately, the http://slashergirl.com/blogs/blog/17347611-photography-duos 2/4 1/12/2015 Photography Duos – Slasher Girl two photograph their subjects simultaneously from different angles, and both Inez and Vindooh share the credit for the winning shot. The couple’s collaboration spills over into many avenues, too - from photographing the cover of to creating a perfume and jewelry line and even jointly directing the music video for ’s “Applause.” Other photography teams, like Jaime Beck and Kevin Burg and the up-and-coming We Are the Rhoads, are adding to the growingly impressive list of fashion photography duos. If we look back into the history of fashion photography, this new approach is nothing short of revolutionary. Even 30 years ago photographers were developing their photos alone in the darkroom, but today, artists are collaborating, sharing credit and combining ideas to produce unique and innovative styles. With these results, maybe other industries should take a cue from these photographers and see what can happen when creative minds collide. If this is true, success no longer has to mean climbing a ladder - instead, some of the best work in the industry may come with two names on the label.
