Abstract The bicentenary of Charles Dickens is in 2012, and the Dickens Museum in London is planning to implement a literature outreach program leading up to 2012 that will increase interest in Dickens. In particular a younger demographic of 6-14 year olds will be targeted by the campaign. To help the Dickens Museum achieve this, the project team designed a website for the celebration and for general networking purposes. 3 List of Tables It argues that the characters in the author's final period desperately play roles to find fulfillment and also demonstrates how Dickens himself sought role playing to alleviate his own personal crises. ' ~ v The thesis approaches the fiction by categorizing roles into the two types: expected roles, or those roles demanded by society; and behavioral roles, or those structured, not by society, but by individuals.

    Understanding the Literary Theme Park: Dickens World as Adaptation Marty Gould and Rebecca N. Mitchell (University of South Florida & University of Texas-Pan American, USA) Abstract: How to make sense of Dickens World, an “indoor visitor attraction” which resists the conventions defining similar enterprises? Though it promises to “take visitors on a journey of Dickens lifetime,” transporting them “to Dickensian England,” it is not precisely a Disney-style theme park, a site of literary tourism, or a site of historical significance. Bringing to life the worlds of Dickens’s novels – wherein physical environments, events, and characters are inextricable – depends upon a process of adaptation analogous, we argue, to cinematic or literary adaptation. This article considers Dickens World as a case study in adaptation; we suggest that its attractions demonstrate fundamental adaptive concerns: structure, nostalgia, spectacle, narrative, and commodification. Approaching Dickens World as the spectacularisation of the dynamics of literary encounter, the resulting analysis expands the boundaries of adaptation theory while delineating the aspects of Dickens’s work which make its adaptation compelling but ultimately – as Dickens World shows – challenging.     After Dickens World: Performing Victorians at the Chatham Docks Patrick Fleming (Fisk University, Tennessee, U.S.A.) Abstract: Dickens World first opened in 2007 and has since been interpreted through the lenses of literary tourism, post-modernity, and adaptation theory. But in 2013 the attraction restructured and changed focus. This article draws on research in immersive theatre, heritage studies, and theme parks to compare the original concept to the new. I argue that Dickens World is best viewed as a performance, and that comparing the two versions helps us rethink the role of Dickens World and other immersive instructive entertainment in the twenty-first century. Keywords: adaptation, Charles Dickens, Dickens World, immersive entertainment, literary tourism, performance, theme parks, heritage, TripAdvisor. ***** As visitors approach the Disneyland ticket counter, their view of the park’s centrepiece, Sleeping Beauty’s Castle, is obstructed by the train station. To enter, guests pass through tunnels running below the train and flanked on either side by coming attractions posters, which advertise the park’s rides and shows. The train station functions as a curtain, the posters as previews. Even at park opening the smell of popcorn wafts through these tunnels, not because guests necessarily want popcorn for breakfast but because the smell adds to the sense that one is in a movie theatre. Characters are staged throughout the park, and even non-costumed Disney employees are ‘cast members’ trained to think in terms of ‘on stage’ and ‘off stage’. Recent films based on park attractions like Pirates of the Caribbean and Tomorrowland are a natural progression: Walt Disney involved his top storywriters and animators in constructing Disneyland, and since its opening in 1955 the architectural, metaphoric, and olfactory experience has been framed as a performance.

    Charles Dickens in England Sozo Umemiya In the early spring of 1990, when 1 landed on that homeground of English literature, my heart beat with expectation; full of dreams and determination to see or touch whatever would interest me. My primary concern was nineteenth century literature, especially the subjects of Thackeray, , Dickens and some others. Having completed my preliminary study of those authors, I set off on, a literary journey and encountered en route many interesting things, books, and people associated with my theme. I am now almost tempted to write about all those happy experiences and to show how beneficial, how valuable they must be both to my study and life in future. I will, however, limit myself here to one subject only —`Charles Dickens in England', and leave the others deep in my heart , for the time being at least. Perhaps 1 can begin with some references to the Dickens House in Doughty Street, London. Dickens moved to this house in the spring of 1837 with his wife Catherine and their little baby Charles, only a few weeks old. Dickens's younger brother Fred was also with them, and Catherine's pretty sister Mary Hogarth was an occasional and welcome visitor. Dickens was then engaged in working on the serialisation of The Pickwick Papers and Oliver Twist , as well as some theatri- cal pieces. Day after day, night after night, he spent extreme- ly busy hours as a young author on the one hand , as a home- loving husband and father on the other. Dickens , however , could well manage his densely scheduled days and nights with his tremendous energy, with his robust 1 spirit and bright sense of humour, presumably inherited from his father.

    Literary Austen, Dickens & Other Literary Giants From inspirational bustling cities to idyllic secluded countryside, South East England has been the muse to many great English writers. Following are a selection of some of the many great English writers who have called South East England home. One of the most prolific English writers is Jane Austen who was born in the charming village of Steventon in Hampshire. Later on in life she spent much of her time in the picturesque village of Chawton in Hampshire. She passed away whilst visiting the city of Winchester in Hampshire, in 1817 and was buried in the city’s famous cathedral. Another great English writer, Charles Dickens, was born in Portsmouth in Hampshire in 1812. However he is perhaps best known for his associations with the city of Rochester in Kent. He lived in the city for many years and used it as the setting for many of his most famous novels. More than 100 years later, another memorable English writer arrived in South East England in the form of Kenneth Grahame. He spent many of his formative years on the banks of the River Thames in Berkshire. Later on in life he created the celebrated Wind in the Willows, one of the classics of children’s literature. Further authors of note who lived in South East England include Roald Dahl and J.R.R. Tolkien. Both spent much of their lives in the region, however, Dahl was born in Wales and Tolkien in South Africa. Famous children’s author Dahl had many connections with the South East – his home near Great Missenden in Buckinghamshire still houses his famous writing shed and gypsy caravan.

    From Penguin Critical Anthologies: Charles Dickens, ed. Stephen Wall (1970) Introduction (pp. 25 – 35) Dickens became a fact of life very early in his career, and he has remained one ever since. The usual implications of the adjective ‘Dickensian’ indicate only a limited part of Dickens’s effect on the popular imagination–an effect probably more radical than that made by any other English writer of comparable literary calibre. Some of his characters and some of the situations in the novels soon became and have remained universally available references, a kind of shorthand of the common imagination. A mention of Scrooge, Pickwick or Micawber, or a scene in which Oliver asks for more, is immediately intelligible to an extremely wide public. Our conception of Christmas, our images of towns and cities (London in particular), our understanding of the way children feel–these are the kinds of area in which Dickens’s influence has been so profound that, paradoxically, it has become almost imperceptible, so completely has his way of seeing the world been assimilated into everyday life. This may partly be because, as Humphrey House put it at the end of The Dickens World (1941), ‘He is still the only one of the great English novelists who is read at all widely [among all classes]. .’ However, an awareness of Dickens is not dependent on having read him.
