At the recent Virtual Education Lekgotla, His Excellency, President Cyril Ramaphosa emphasised the importance of the Lekgotla’s theme – 'Equipping learners with the Knowledge and skills for the changing World.' 2 In his opening address at the three-day lekgotla last month, the President called on the sector to teach our learners subjects and content that will equip them to fit the changing profile of their future careers and employable skills. The President directed us to radically change our focus towards the 4th Industrial Revolutions and embrace efforts to bring new learning areas such as Robotics and Coding in the foundation phase. We must teach skills that will enable economic growth and ensure that young people read with meaning by their 10th birthday. The 2021 schooling kicked-off in earnest on 15 February. The take-off has been hitch- free from every indication - thanks to significant commitment and innovations undertaken by our industrious principals, teachers, parents, provincial and district officials.

If you’d rather spot the Big Five without professional help, do a self-drive safari in Pi- lanesberg National Park. The most accessible park in the country is cheaper than Madikwe, and still has 7000 animals packed into its extinct volcano confines. Plus it’s less than three hours’ drive from Jo’burg. When you’ve had your fill betting on finding rhino, switch to cards at the opulent Sun City casino complex down the road. The final component of the province’s big attraction trifecta is the southern hemisphere’s answer to Las Vegas: a shame- lessly gaudy, unabashedly kitsch and downright delicious place to pass an afternoon. Madikwe, Pilanesberg and Sun City may be the North-West Province’s heavyweight at- tractions, but there are more here than the province’s ‘Big Three’.

NOMVULA MOKONYANE, MINISTER OF WATER AND SANITATION DURING THE LAUNCH OF THE BLOEMHOF PURIFICATION PLANT AT BOITUMELONG TOWNSHIP IN LEKWA-TEEMANE LOCAL MUNICIPALITY, BLOEMHOF, NORTH WEST 24 NOVEMBER 2016 INTRODUCTION Hardly a fortnight that myself and Ms. Pamella Tshwete were appointed by the President of the Republic of South Africa, Jacob Zuma, as Minister and Deputy-Minister respectively, to lead the newly formed Department of Water and Sanitation, we were confronted by the ugly incident of diarrhea outbreak as a result of water contamination here in Bloemhof. At the time, a decision was made to suspend the flow of tap water in order to reduce all possibility of the community drinking what could be polluted water supplies. The local municipality drained their whole system, cleaned their sand filters, and flushed their system. The community at the time received water by means of water tankers. Despite this, it was confirmed that a diarrhea outbreak as a result of contaminated water had claimed the lives of three babies while hundreds were treated for diarrhea. As part of the intervention, the Department of Water and Sanitation issued a directive in June 2014 for Sedibeng Water to take over the responsibility of operations and maintenance of the Water Treatment Works (WTW) and Waste Water Treatment Works (WWTW) in Bloemhof, following the sewage spillages into the Vaal River. Circumstances today indicate progress and growth in relation to the challenges that beset the community of Bloemhof. 1 We have assessed the progress on the Bucket Eradication Programme thus far as well as unveil the plague at the Bloemhof Purification Plant in honour of the babies who died of diarrhea in Bloemhof.

Natura Viva cc, PO Box 12410 Mill Street, Cape Town 8010, RSA [email protected] January 2020 EXECUTIVE SUMMARY Ventura Renewable Energy (Pty) Ltd is proposing to develop up to four solar PV facilities, each of up to 100 MW generation capacity, on the farm Visserspan No. 40, c. 10 km northwest of Dealesville and 68 km northwest of Bloemfontein, in the Tokologo Local Municipality, Free State Province. Substantial direct impacts on fresh, potentially-fossiliferous Tierberg Formation (Ecca Group, Karoo Supergroup) bedrocks during the construction phase of the proposed PV solar projects are considered unlikely. The mapped outcrop areas of the Tierberg Formation within the PV solar project areas are small while the mudocks here are likely to be weathered near-surface and mantled by thick superficial deposits such as calcrete. In this region, the near-surface Ecca Group bedrocks are very often extensively disrupted and veined by Quaternary calcrete as well as baked by dolerite intrusions, compromising their palaeontological sensitivity. Potentially fossiliferous Pleistocene alluvial or spring deposits were not encountered in the study area, while pan and associated dune sediments here lie largely – but not exclusively - outside the development footprint. The calcrete hardpans encountered within the study area are of low palaeontological sensitivity.
