Volume 27, number 1, May 2000 Sathyabhama Daly DAVID MALOUF'S REMEMBERING BABYLON AND THE WILD MAN OF THE EUROPEAN CULTURAL CONSCIOUSNESS David Malouf's Remembering Babylon engages with both the myth of the wild man of the Western literary tradition and with Judaeo-Christian concept of the wilderness. In doing so, it illustrates the way in which these myths exert a powerful influence on the European settlers' conception of the Australian landscape and its indigenous people. The myth of the wild man itself recurs throughout the history of Western literature. His presence, according to Richard Bernheimer in Wild Men in the Middle Ages, dates back to the pre-Christian world and to the pagan beliefs of native religions which the Church found difficult to eradicate (21). The image which has persisted in Western art and literature is that of the wild man as a degenerate being—an insane creature who, robbed of the power of speech and intellect, wanders alone in the wilderness. He is inextricably linked with the environment he inhabits, to the point where wildness and insanity almost become inseparable terms (Bernheimer 12).1 These characteristics call to mind Gemmy Fuirley in Remembering Babylon, a simple-minded, strange "white black man" (69), an outcast of white society, who is discovered by the Aborigines and raised as one of them. A hybrid figure, he is interjected into history—from nature into culture, as it were—in order to confront the white settlers with their repression of the Aboriginal presence, as well as to provoke them into a fuller understanding of themselves. -

Generations of heroes The Argonautica of Apollonius Rhodius brings emphatically to the attention of its readers the distinction between the generation of the Argonauts and the heroes of the Trojan War in the next genera- tion. Apollonius initially highlights this emphasis in the episode of the Argonauts’ departure, when the baby Achilles is watching them, at AR 1.557-5581 σὺν καί οἱ (sc. Chiron) παράκοιτις ἐπωλένιον φορέουσα | Πηλείδην Ἀχιλῆα, φίλωι δειδίσκετο πατρί (“and with him his wife, hold- ing Peleus’ son Achilles in her arms, showed him to his dear father”)2; he does so again in 4.866-879, which describes Thetis and Achilles as a baby. More specifically Jacqueline Klooster (2014, 521-530), in discussing the treatment of time in the Argonautica, distinguishes four periods of time to which Apollonius refers: first, the time before the Argo sailed, from the beginning of the cosmos (featured in the song of Orpheus in AR 1.496-511); second, the time of its sailing (i.e. the time of the epic’s setting); third, the past after the Argo sailed and fourth the present inhab- ited by the narrator (both hinted at by numerous allusions and aitia). -

Waiting for Redemption in the House of Asterion: a Stylistic Analysis

Vol.2, No.2, 51-56 Published Online June 2012 in SciRes (http://www.SciRP.org/journal/ojml) http://dx.doi.org/10.4236/ojml.2012.22007 Waiting for Redemption in The House of Asterion: A Stylistic Analysis Martin Tilney Macquarie University, Sydney, Australia Email: [email protected] Received February 20th, 2012; revised March 7th, 2012; accepted March 15th, 2012 The House of Asterion is a short story by Jorge Luis Borges that retells the classical myth of the Cretan Minotaur from an alternate perspective. The House of Asterion features the Minotaur, aka Asterion, who waits for “redemption” in his labyrinth. Many literary critics have suggested that the Borgesian labyrinth is a metaphor for human existence and the universe itself. Others have correctly interpreted Asterion’s ironic death at the hands of Theseus as his eagerly awaited redemption. Borges’ subversion of the reader’s expectations becomes the departure point for a systemic functional stylistic analysis of the story in one of its English translations, revealing how deeper-level meanings in the text are construed through its lexico- grammatical structure. A systemic functional stylistic reading suggests that on a higher level of reality, Asterion’s redemption is not only the freedom that death affords, but also a transformation that transcends his fictional universe. Asterion’s twofold redemption is brought about not only by the archetypal hero Theseus but also by the reader, who through the process of reading enables Asterion’s emancipation from the labyrinth. Walter Cohen University of Michigan SAA 2021 Historical Novel (and other genres) of Early Modern World (1450-1700) Key issues a. History/temporality i. Renaissance vs. other periods as object of historical representation. Do you get anything different from delimiting the historical novels under scrutiny to the early modern period—i.e. anything different from historical novels about other periods? This question asks us to compare the historical novels in this study grouping to historical novels about Antiquity, the Middle Ages, the 18th-mid 20th century. ii. Different periods in which accounts of Renaissance are composed. Do you get anything different from delimiting the historical novels under scrutiny to the early modern period—i.e. anything different from seeing realism- modernism-postmodernism as successive forms of the historical novel? This question asks us to compare the historical novels in this grouping to each other along the historical/formalist lines of the three obvious periods of the historical novel. It uses Perry Anderson’s 2011 survey of the historical novel as a baseline for comparison. iii. Composite account of the era? What if you keep the different times when the novels were written, the different genres (realism-modernism- postmodernism), the different languages in which they’re written, and the different places and events they treat all in the background? Instead, we ask: what do we get from reading these novels as a composite account of the era? Is it different from what we get from a more familiar history of the historical novel (Lukács-Anderson) and/or from the current state of historiography of the period? How is it inflected by early modern writers themselves—above all Shakespeare? b. -

Housman (1859–1936) Born in Worcestershire in 1859, Alfred Edward Housman was a gifted classical scholar and poet. After studying in Oxford, Housman worked for ten years as a clerk, while publishing and writing scholarly articles on Horace, Propertius, Ovid, Aeschylus, Euripides and Sophocles. He gradually acquired such a high reputation that in 1892 he returned to the academic world as Professor of Classics at University College London (1892–1911) and then as Kennedy Professor of Latin at Trinity College, Cambridge (1911–1936). Housman Lectures at UCL The Department of Greek and Latin at University College London organizes regular Housman Lectures, named after its illustrious former colleague (with support from UCL Alumni). Housman Lectures, delivered by a scholar of international distinction, originally took place every second year and now happen every year, alternating between Greek and Roman topics (Greek lectures being funded by the A.G. Leventis Foundation). The fifth Housman lecture, which was given by Professor Eric Csapo (Professor of Classics, University of Sydney) on 20 February 2013, is here reproduced with minor adjustments. This lecture and its publication were generously supported by the A.G. The epic poem thrives not only through new editions and translations but also through allusions from other works. Texts incorporate allusions to add meaning to modern narratives, but allusions also complicate the original text. By tying two stories together, allusion preserves historical works and places them in conversation with modern literature. Ulysses and Asterios Polyp demonstrate the prevalence of allusions in books and comic books. Vahtang Mark Shervashidze 1 ABSTRACT The history of the labyrinth in Western thought is intimately connected with the development of Christianity and the philosophical movements associated with it. Roughly speaking, the labyrinth has passed through three periods of development. First, there were the Minoan and Greek sources of the Theseus cycle, which are the foundation of 1abyrinth-1 ore. The Greeks also provided the analogical structure which allowed the labyrinth to expand its repertoire of metaphor beyond mythology into literature. Secondly, perhaps due to the renascence of classical literature in the eleventh and twelfth centuries, the labyrinth enjoyed some popularity in France and Italy. Here we must distinguish between purely conceptual, literary labyrinths and the artifactual examples which dot cathedral and church floors across the lie de France and Italy. -

Annual Atwood Bibliography 2016 Ashley Thomson and Shoshannah Ganz This year’s bibliography, like its predecessors, is comprehensive but not complete. References that we have uncovered —almost always theses and dissertations —that were not available even through interlibrary loan, have not been included. On the other hand, citations from past years that were missed in earlier bibliographies appear in this one so long as they are accessible. Those who would like to examine earlier bibliographies may now access them full-text, starting in 2007, in Laurentian University’s Institutional Repository in the Library and Archives section . The current bibliography has been embargoed until the next edition is available. Of course, members of the Society may access all available versions of the Bibliography on the Society’s website since all issues of the Margaret Atwood Studies Journal appear there. Users will also note a significant number of links to the full-text of items referenced here and all are active and have been tested on 1 August 2017. That said—and particularly in the case of Atwood’s commentary and opinion pieces —the bibliography also reproduces much (if not all) of what is available on-line, since what is accessible now may not be obtainable in the future. And as in the 2015 Bibliography, there has been a change in editing practice —instead of copying and pasting authors’ abstracts, we have modified some to ensure greater clarity. There are a number of people to thank, starting with Dunja M.
