Email: [email protected] Abstract A new genus, Nephelomyias, is erected for three species of Andean tyrant flycatchers (Aves: Passeriformes: Tyrannidae) traditionally placed in the genus Myiophobus. An extensive study based on molecular data has shown that they form a well supported clade that is not closely related to other Myiophobus species. Instead, they form a small independent lineage in Tyrannidae, together with Pyrrhomyias, Hirundinea and Myiotriccus. Key words: Nephelomyias lintoni, Nephelomyias ochraceiventris, Nephelomyias pulcher, Tyrannidae, taxonomy, phylogeny Introduction Recent phylogenetic studies, based on extensive molecular data (e.g. Ohlson et al. 2008; Tello et al. 2009), have greatly improved our knowledge of the relationships and evolution of the tyrant flycatchers (Tyrannidae). Several unexpected relationships have been revealed and a number of traditional genera have proven to be non-monophyletic, prompting taxonomic rearrangements. Here we erect a new generic name for three species traditionally placed in the genus Myiophobus, which were found by Ohlson et al. -

SANTOS Departamento de Biologia Geral, Instituto de Ciências Biológicas, Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais, CP 486, 31270-901, Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais, Brazil Abstract The tyrannids are one of the most diverse groups of birds in the world, and the most numerous suboscine family in the Neotropics. Reflecting such diversity, many taxonomic issues arise in this group, mainly due to morphological similarities, even among phylogenetically distant species. Other issues appear at higher taxonomic levels, mostly brought up by genetic studies, making systematics a rather inconclusive issue. This study looks into the use of DNA barcodes method to discriminate and identify Tyrannidae species occurring in the Atlantic Forest and Cerrado biomes of Brazil. We analysed 266 individuals of 71 tyrant-flycatcher species from different geographical locations by sequencing 542 bp of the mtDNA COI gene. The great majority of the analysed species showed exclusive haplotypes, usually displaying low intraspecific diversity and high interspecific divergence. Only Casiornis fuscus and Casiornis rufus, suggested in some studies to belong to a single species, could not be phy- logenetically separated. High intraspecific diversity was observed among Elaenia obscura individuals, which can suggest the existence of cryptic species in this taxon. The same was also observed for Suiriri suiriri, considered by some authors to comprise at least two species, and by others to be divided into three subspecies. -

Southern Ecuador 10-29 January 2016
Southern Ecuador 10-29 january 2016 This trip was organized and guided by Roger Ahlman for Zoothera Global Birding. The timing was set to be in the otherwise dry Tumbesian region during the rainy season which is the peak breeding season there. For the remaining part it is less important when to go. The trip was completed without any problems, illnesses or other hick-ups. Weather was also kind to us with no major rainfalls. We did have some time lost to rain and some sites where more sunny than desired. Dense fog was a problem at Saraguro and Cerro Toledo, but all that could be expected during a 3-week trip. The tour consisted of main tour (17 days) and an extension to the coast (3 days). We recorded a total of 685 species (IOC 6.1 taxonomy) out of which 43 were heard only. Among the seen species were no less than 63 species of hummingbirds and 90 species of tyrant flycatchers. We sampled six sites, in- cluding four small fragments (from 4 to 64 ha) in an agricultural area (Teresópolis), one second-growth forest (440 ha - Miguel Pereira) and a continuous forest (10,600 ha, Serra dos Órgãos National Park - SONP). Indicator Species analy- sis and a Monte Carlo test were run to detect associations between species and sites, considering at least 30% of perfect indication and a significant value for the statistical test, only considering species with at least 10 captures. A total of 30 Passerine birds were sampled, and due to their association to the largest area (SONP), we considered Sclerurus scansor, Mionectes rufiventris, Chiroxiphia caudata and Habia rubica as the best indicators for this area. -

Resumen. – Diferencias entre las comunidades de aves de bosque de garua maduro y secundario en el Parque Nacional Machalilla, Ecuador. – Las estrategias de conservación a nivel de los ecosiste- mas son más eficaces si consideran el grado de sensibilidad que presentan los organismos frente a la per- dida o el cambio estructural de su hábitat. Este estudio presenta información sobre las comunidades de aves del bosque húmedo de la región Tumbesina del Ecuador y, compara mediante el uso de redes de neblina y observación directa, la composición de aves presentes en bosque de garúa maduro y secundario dentro del Parque Nacional Machalilla (PNM). En este estudio registramos 159 especies de aves durante las épocas seca y lluviosa de 1999 & 2000. Realizamos un esfuerzo total de muestreo de 1950 h de capturas con redes y capturamos 729 individuos pertenecientes a 85 especies. Alrededor del 60% de las especies capturadas en redes de neblina dentro de uno u otro tipo de bosque no se hallaban compartidas. La riqueza de especies fue mayor en bosque secundario y se sugiere algunas razones autoecológicas: 1) presencia de especies dependientes de bosque maduro ausentes en bosque secundario, 2) especies insectívoras genera- listas prefieren bosque secundario, y 3) especies migratorias prefieren habitats marginales secundarios. -

Although the composition of the family is largely settled, intergeneric relationships are poorly understood. Morpholog- ical and behavior-based classifications are in disagreement with DNA–DNA hybridization data, and both have recently been con- tradicted by DNA-sequence studies. However, previous DNA-sequence sampling has mostly focused on two out of the six traditional tribes. In this study, we have sampled mitochondrial and nuclear sequences of additional tyrannid genera from across the Tyrannidae, with particularly dense coverage of a third tribe (Elaeniini). Our data corroborate previous DNA-sequence studies that demonstrate a basal division of Tyrannidae into a pipromorphine group (recruited from two morphological tribes) and the core Tyrannidae. Further- more, we identify a new assemblage that includes Platyrinchus and the enigmatic Neopipo, although the position of this lineage within the Tyrannidae remains incertae sedis. Within the core Tyrannidae, we find strong support for a monophyletic elaeniine assemblage, and discuss a number of strongly supported sub-clades and species-level arrangements that display varying levels of agreement with previous classifications. -
