  • Achter De Schermen Achter Een Verkennend Onderzoek Naar Downloaders Van Kinderporno
• Sanitizing the Seventies Pornography, Home Video, and the Editing of Sexual Memory
WHITNEY STRUB Sanitizing the Seventies Pornography, Home Video, and the Editing of Sexual Memory ABSTRACT During the 1980s US feminist sex wars, pornography edited its own history, leav- ing a distorted record both less problematic and less queer than scholars have yet recognized. Academic inquiry into pornography coincided with home-video boom years, and research often took place in adult backrooms, necessarily because pornography was so poorly archived. Yet even as access has shifted from VHS to digital, the field has yet to reckon with how its interpre- tive frameworks were shaped by a material history in which the films that scholars watched were often altered from the versions patrons had seen in theaters. Gone from both straight and gay films were many transgressive sex acts that had frequently been staples of the genre, affecting the perceived oeuvre of nearly every hardcore filmmaker of the era. This article recov- ers the lost history of sexual media editing, arguing for a more carefully historicized interro- gation of the commercial sources of our porn archives. KEYWORDS censorship, home video, new video studies, pornography, sex wars At the height of the s feminist sex wars, pornography edited its own history. Few noticed and no official archives recorded or preserved this change, but the interpretive stakes were, and remain, high. Scenes disappeared, and with them the social meanings of texts, resulting in a disconnect between embodied histori- cal experiences and the later textual interpretations of those works. The pornog- raphy industry sanitized its s iterations, leaving a distorted record that narrowed the scope of its erotic imaginary in ways that left it both less misogy- nistic and less expansive, a triumph of the banal and the genital that necessitates intervention, since the “porno chic” that scholars have inherited is in large part an industrial memory production of the sands, as pornography’shis- tory was quietly disciplined and revised over the course of its various platform adaptations.

THE INVISIBLE MAN: THE CONSCIOUS NEGLECT OF MEN AND BOYS IN THE WAR ON HUmAN TRAFFICKING Samuel Vincent Jones* I am an invisible man. No, I am not a spook like those who haunted Edgar Allan Poe. I am a man of substance, offlesh and bone, fiber and liquids-andI might even be said to possess a mind. I am invisible, understand, simply because people refuse to see me . When they approach me they see only my surroundings, themselves, or figments of their imagination-indeed,everything and anything except me. -Ralph Ellison' I.

  • Romanticizing Colonialism: Power and Pleasure in Jane Campion's the Piano
Romanticizing Colonialism: Power and Pleasure in Jane Campion's The Piano Reshela DuPuis When writer-director Jane Campion's film sensation, The Piano, won the I993 Palme d'Or at Cannes, she became the first woman director ever to have won that award for a full-length film. In a movie world sadly bereft of internationally acclaimed female directors, Campion's work has deservedly attracted a committed following of film critics and moviegoers alike. As a major production written and directed by her, and with one of the strongest female protagonists seen in years, The Piano occasioned intense excitement among critics and drew sizable audiences across the country when released in the United States. 1 The Piano is a remarkable movie-haunting, beautifully photographed, and, as the jacket of the published screenplay noted, "utterly compelling ... a tale of visionary eroticism filled with imagery you'll never forget" (Campion 1993). Cam pion elicited extraordinary performances from her actors. Holly Hunter deservedly won Best Actress at the 1994 Academy Awards for her por trayal of Ada McGrath Stewart, a mute nineteenth-century Scotswoman sent to New Zealand to marry a man she's never met. Anna Paquin, as Ada's young daughter, Flora, was the surprise winner of the Academy's Best Supporting Actress Award. Playing against New Zealand's spectacu lar forests and shoreline, the film's principal male actors also rendered uncommonly strong performances-Sam Neill as Ada's possessive hus band, Alisdair Stewart, and Harvey Keitel as the crude but passionate colonist with whom Ada becomes sexually involved, George Baines.

  • Hard-Core Harm: Why You Can't Be Soft on Porn
HARD-CORE HARM: WHY YOU CAN’T BE SOFT ON PORN By Jan LaRue, Chief Counsel Concerned Women for America America has become a nation of pay-per-view peeping toms. Voyeurism is an immensely profitable commodity as people spend millions watching other people have sex. And filthy rich pornographers dupe the public with the myth that pornography is harmless and the sex industry is good for the economy. What they don’t want you to know about is the loss column—pornography contributes to anti- social behavior and crime, especially sex crimes; it contaminates public health, destroys marriages and families, defiles religious communities, hinders education and depletes educational resources, increases abortions and taxes, weakens the economy. In neighborhoods afflicted with sex businesses, it destroys the value of houses and drives out legitimate businesses. Although you may never look at pornography, it is hurting you and those you love in ways you may never have considered. “Even supposing that each of us can, if he wishes, effectively avert the eye and stop the ear (which, in truth, we cannot), what is commonly read and seen and heard and done intrudes upon us all, want it or not.”1 As Diane told her story at the National Press Club in Washington, D.C., in 1992, I stood next to her watching tears fill the eyes of veteran reporters: I’ve always felt that pornography was bad, that it was harmful. But I felt that it didn’t affect me personally. No members of my family ever read pornography. My husband’s family didn’t read pornography.

This Comment would not have been possible without the insight and guidance of Judge David Schuman and Professor Caroline Forell, the sensible, thoughtful contributions of Carl Engstrom and Dr. Frederick Engstrom, and inspiration from Bonnie Olson, Dr. Michael Leiserson, and Dr. Jane Rinehart. [*1067] The photograph is captioned “Beaver Hunters.” Two white men, dressed as hunters, sit in a black Jeep. The Jeep occupies almost the whole frame of the picture. The two men carry rifles. The rifles extend above the frame of the photograph into the white space surrounding it. The men and the Jeep face into the camera. Tied onto the hood of the black Jeep is a white woman. She is tied with thick rope. She is spread-eagle. Her pubic hair and crotch are the dead center of the car hood and the photograph. Her head is turned to one side, tied down by rope that is pulled taut across her neck, extended to and wrapped several times around her wrists, tied around the rearview mirrors of the Jeep, brought back around her arms, crisscrossed under her breasts and over her thighs, drawn down and wrapped around the bumper of the Jeep, tied around her ankles... The text under the photograph reads: “Western sportsmen report beaver hunting was particularly good throughout the Rocky Mountain region during the past season.
