Tun Razak and Tun Ismail – the movie By ISABELLE LAI [email protected] PETALING JAYA: The extraordinary friendship between Tun Abdul Razak Hussein and Tun Dr Ismail Abdul Rahman will be depicted for the first time in a movie. A hunt is underway to find the actors to play the roles of the two leaders who were instrumental in bringing peace and stability to the country after the May 13, 1969 racial conflict. Leading roles: The hunt is on for actors to play Tun Abdul Razak and Dr Ismail (above). Co-producer Kavita Sidhu said they were looking for experienced performers for individual casting. “They can be Malay, Chinese, Indian, Eurasian and Caucasian aged 20 to 50 plus. Ability to handle dialogues in English would be an advantage,” she said, adding that the movie would be in Bahasa Malaysia with 30% English dialogue. With the working title of TANDA Putera Negara, the movie will depict the bond between Malaysia’s second Prime Minister and Deputy Prime Minister and how “they remained focused on securing the future of the country even while battling their own fatal illnesses.” Tun Abdul Razak Written by producer and director Datin Paduka Shuhaimi Baba, it aims to portray how they brought the country back from the brink of disaster in the aftermath of May 13. “For the two leaders, it was always ‘Country First’ no matter what their own personal circumstances were,” she said, adding that shooting would begin in May. Kavita also said that visual effects consultant Madhu Sudhanan from Mumbai would assist the production team.

Penang asks cinemas not to screen Tanda Putera MalaysiaKini.com Aug 28, 2013 By Susan Loone The Penang government will request cinemas in the state to not screen 'Tanda Putera', which is scheduled for release nationwide tomorrow. NONEState exco member Chow Kon Yeow, who is in charge of local government and thus cinema licences, said his department will issue the written request today. "We have no control over the content of the film, (which is the prerogative of) Finas (National Film Development Corporation Malaysia). "However, in view of the sensitive nature of the movie, we are directing the two local councils (in Penang and Seberang Perai) to write in to ask the cooperation of the cinemas to not screen the movie," he told a press conference. lim guan eng interview 160813 02Asked what would the state do if the cinemas refused to comply, Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng (left), who was also present, did not provide a direct answer. "The film has scenes which are slanderous, based on lies, and it is a threat to the harmony between the different communities in the country. "Those scenes of Chinese youth urinating inside the Selangor menteri besar (Harun Idris') residence and Malaysian flag can create chaos in society," he said. He said the incident never happened because the residence was heavily guarded, as claimed by a witness who was at Harun's house at the material time. Licence to lie? Lim also took the mainstream media to task for failing to point out that the scene was a work of fiction. On film director Shuhaimi Baba's explanation that the filmmakers claimed "creative licence" to adapt historical events into the film, Lim said that it was not a "licence to lie".

  • A Citizen's Right 8 March 2013 Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad 1. It Would
A Citizen’s Right 8 March 2013 Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad 1. It would seem that some people are unhappy over my continued involvement in politics. As a retiree I should just retire. 2. I did in fact plan to retire in 1998. But events at that time forced me to defer. When the conditions in Malaysia had been stabilised after the currency crisis, I announced my retirement in 2002. But I gave the assurance that I would continue to support the party at all times as my elevation to the highest office in the country was due to the support of the party. To me it is payback time. 3. Unfortunately, under the policy and practices of the Government which followed, the healthy growth of the country was hampered. The effect is still felt today. More seriously the attempts to reduce the economic disparities between the races have been neglected. Although the election of 2004 resulted in overwhelming victory of the governing BN party, there were clear signs that the popularity of the Party was deteriorating after the 2004 elections. 4. The 2008 Election resulted in heavy losses by the BN. The Government it formed was very weak and the opposition took advantage by raising racist and religious issues. Where before there was relative harmony between the races, now there is open confrontation. Affirmative action was viciously attacked by the opposition and the Government had to give in. And now religious issues are being even more politicised. 5. Clearly the opposition parties are bent on doing away with the attempt to achieve fair economic participation between the races.

  • In Search of Environmental Justice in Malaysia: the Cases of Broga and Bukit Merah
IN SEARCH OF ENVIRONMENTAL JUSTICE IN MALAYSIA: THE CASES OF BROGA AND BUKIT MERAH Li Kheng Poh A thesis submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements of the University of Brighton for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy January 2015 University of Brighton ABSTRACT The thesis examines two environmental campaigns in Malaysia in order to consider their significance in relation to conceptualising ideas of environmental justice and citizenship. The first campaign, the Broga anti-incinerator campaign is compared and contrasted to the second campaign, the Bukit Merah anti-radioactive waste campaign. Using a qualitative approach, the thesis examines how campaigners made use of a wide range of international environmental justice concepts and discourses, and campaigning strategies. These were locally adapted to fit the Malaysian political and social context, so that campaigners could demand their rights and challenge the responsibilities of the state and business interests. Campaigners made their demands for accountability not only through the law courts, but also through using discourses and strategies of environmentalism, rights to information and participation, citizen science, and lobbying internationally via transnational advocacy networks. Collectively, these actions brought both internal and external pressures to bear on the state and business interests, and created new spaces for dissent and for the construction of rights and entitlements. While actual material gains were not substantial, there were gradual incremental changes in feelings of personal empowerment and political consciousness, and in institutional health and safety processes. From this, I argue that conceptual links should be made between ideas of environmental justice and environmental citizenship. Concepts of environmental citizenship help to strengthen arguments for environmental justice, and vice versa.

On one hand, they allowed the controversial film 'Tanda Putera' to be screened on Aug 29 - two days before Merdeka celebration. This was in spite of the ban before the 13th general election that the movie was not suitable for the general public. The BN cabinet's words, orders and promises cannot be trusted. Then, on the other hand, they want us to show our loyalty by flying Malaysian flags? And to add insult to injury, Communication and Multimedia Minister Ahmad Shabery Cheek ordered national anthem to be played in over 700 cinemas nationwide from Aug 28 to Sept 3. So shall we stand proudly when the national anthem is played in cinemas when we know that the national pride has been hijacked for Umno politics? McDaniel This dissertation explores the roles played by media toward political engagement and disengagement among students at Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM), an affirmative action university in Malaysia, during 2010. In doing so, this study examined perceptions regarding Malaysian media and politics, and the roles played by both mainstream mass media and online media in fostering political engagement and disengagement among UiTM students. The ethnographic fieldwork for this study was conducted during 2010—a critical year in Malaysia’s political history, which preceded the repeal of the country’s controversial laws including the Internal Security Act University and the University Colleges Act (UUCA). Before its repeal in 2012, UUCA banned university students and academicians from joining political parties, which presented a key challenge in obtaining informant feedback during the fieldwork.

Show Tanda Putera to all M'sians, suggests Mahathir MalaysiaKini.com March 14, 2013 Hazlan Zakaria Details of the May 13 riots, such as that depicted in Tanda Putera, should be provided to all Malaysians as a precautionary tale to avoid future racial unrest, said former premier Dr Mahathir Mohamad. "It depends, people have many perceptions. But I think that we should tell the rakyat what really happened on May 13 so that it becomes a lesson to all of us," Mahathir told reporters today. "Because as a multiracial country, if we are not careful, our country may become unstable because of constant racial riots." He said this when asked to respond if the cabinet decision to suspend the screening of the film and selective screening of the movie, was a wise move. Funded by National Film Development Corporation and the Multimedia Development Corporation (MDeC), the film depicts the trials and tribulations faced by second prime minister Abdul Razak Hussein following the May 13 riots. Mahathir's character was depicted penning a letter condemning then-premier Tunku Abdul Rahman and was subsequently sacked from Umno. The first portion of the film deals with the riots. Although Malays and Chinese were depicted causing harm to each other, the latter was depicted as the antagonist more often. Mahathir was speaking to reporters after speaking at a dialogue session on the feasibility of a two-party system, organised by the Universiti Malaya Alumni Association . 'Wait for Najib to be ready' Asked if it was also wise for Prime Minister Mohd Najib Abdul Razak to continue delaying polls, he said it is all up to the PM.
