History: 1880-1900’s: The "Crazy Water" is known across the county for improving health conditions and even depression with the traces of lithium. 1912: The Crazy Water Hotel opened with 200 rooms, a large lobby and pavilion, a ballroom, meeting rooms, and a rooftop patio. 1910-1920's: Mineral Wells hosted baseball spring training camp for the Chicago White Sox, Cincinnati Reds and St. Louis Cardinals. 1929: The Baker Hotel opens, described as a "Spanish Colonial Revival, Commercial Highrise." The hotel has 14 stories, 450 guest rooms, and closed in 1972. 1925-1946: The US military installation, Camp Wolters operated and after the war closed. In 1951 the Air Force base opened to train the Air Force engineers 1943: Regional Airport opened for the Wolters Air Force Base as a training base in World War II. Continental (United) had eight DC-3 departures a day from 1949-1959. 1952, The city was the host of the Republican state convention in which delegates voted 33-5 for Dwight D. Eisenhower vs. Senator Robert A. Taft. 2017: Crazy Water Hotel renovation by Local Leaders coming together to rebrand the seven-story into upscale apartments with estimated delivery in December 2022. 2019: The Baker Hotel & Spa secured $65 million to restore the hotel, projected to open in 2024. These efforts were supported by the city since 2014. Mineral Wells - Palo Pinto County offers several State Parks and historical sites: Crazy Water Bottling Co.,Mineral Wells Lake Texas State Park, The Baker Hotel and Spa, the Crazy Water Hotel, and the nearby Possum Kingdom Lake National Retailers: Walmart, McDonald’s, Starbuck’s, Burger King, Sutherlands, Chili’s, Little Caesars Pizza, Tractor Supply, Sonic, Crown Dental, Domino’s, Ace Hardware, Dollar General, Subway, Chicken Express, Dollar Tree, CVS, Golden Chicken, Panda Express and the locals favorite the Mesquite Pit. Downtown: The number of retailers are growing as the new Coffees & Cocktails, All-Terrain Fitness, The Flower Shop at 76067, The Market at 76067, Brazos Market & Bistro, plans for food truck pads, a splash pad, farmer’s market and other attractions to draw both residents and visitors to downtown. Nature and Outdoor Adventures: Lake Mineral Wells State Park & Trailways: Amazing trails, camping, fishing, horse riding trails, and rock walls for climbing (Penitentiary Hollow). The area includes Pos- sum Kingdom State Park and the Goodnight Loving Trail-Brazos Ranch. , just a hop away Places to Visit: Crazy Water Company, Clark Gardens, Woody's Bar, B-four Barn, Texas Frontier Trails Western Heritage Park, Fort Wolters, and 52 Historical Markers in Palo Pinto County. Palo Pinto County Hospital: The hospital has over 350 Employees and +/- 65,000 patient visits annually. Lake Mineral Wells State Park & Trailways is the only state park in Texas that protects part of the Western Cross Timbers and Mineral Wells Trailways. The park hosts Penitentiary Hollow, a geological feature which resembles a small canyon, and is a popular site for top-rope rock climbing. He begins the business of selling hides and fur to prominent businessman in Dallas. Ike called the hunters "The boys from the Possum Kingdom." Possum Kingdom Lake grew and now is referred to as “PK” by all the locals. Possum Kingdom Lake is a reservoir created by the Morris Sheppard Dam (US Senator) on the Brazos River, built from 1936-1941. The lake is home to the famous Hell's Gate, a sheer break in the cliffs around the lake. The lake's name was the title of a famous 1990's song "Possum Kingdom" by The Toadies. .
