Gruenhagen Graduate Faculty Representative Radhika Gajjala, Committee Co-Chair Jeremy Wallach ii ABSTRACT Kristine Blair and Radhika Gajjala, Committee Co-Chairs Forum-based role-playing games are a rich, yet barely researched subset of text- based digital gaming. They are a form of storytelling where narratives are created through acts of play by multiple people in an online space, combining collaboration and improvisation. This dissertation acts as a pilot study for exploring these games in their full complexity at the intersection of play, narrative, and fandom. Building on theories of interactivity, digital storytelling, and fan fiction studies, it highlights forum games’ most unique features, and proves that they are is in no way liminal or secondary to more popular forms of role-playing. The research is based on data drawn from a large sample of forums of various genres. One hundred sites were explored through close textual analysis in order to outline their most common features. The second phase of the project consisted of nine months of participant observation on select forums, in order to gain a better understanding of how their rules and practices influence the emergent narratives. Participants from various sites contributed their own interpretations of forum gaming through a series of ethnographic interviews. This did not only allow agency to the observed communities to voice their thoughts and explain their practices, but also spoke directly to the key research question of why people are drawn to forum gaming. -

The origin of this thesis is, like many others before it, born from a sense of disjuncture between what I heard about something, and what I experienced of it. The ‘something’ in question is what is increasingly, and I believe somewhat erroneously, termed as ‘new audio culture’. By this I refer to all scholarly and popular talk and activity concerning iPods, MP3s, headphones, and podcasts: everything which we may understand as being tethered to an older history of audio-media, yet which is more often defined almost exclusively by its digital parameters. -

Rethinking time in a changing world 1 Outstanding Achievement Award 2018 Professor Frances Heidensohn (London School of Economics) Professor Frances Heidensohn has made an outstanding contribution to both the discipline and to those who work within it. Her expansive body of work spans almost fifty years and is both national and international in reach, influence and impact. Her seminal paper in 1968, ‘The deviance of women’ a critique and an enquiry’, shone a critical light on the lack of investigation and the theoretical neglect of women’s deviance. In calling for a gendered sociology of knowledge, the growth in feminist criminological scholarship, changes to the criminological curriculum, journals and networks devoted to the study of gender, crime and social control that have emerged over the last five decades is extraordinary; and in all of these endeavours, Professor Heidensohn has played a key role in their initiation. In challenging the cultural and structural contexts of academia – and their relation to larger social and political institutions – her work has forced the academe to consider what we study, how and why we study them. Her work has since been taken up and addressed by feminist scholars and has inspired generations of feminist criminologists. Her body of work has also impacted on those scholars that do not identify as feminist but are still convinced by the inherent logic that gender is one of the most basic organizing structures within and across societies, and as such her work has broad import for our understanding of crime and social control. Her book Women and Crime (1985) firmly established her as a major criminological thinker and continues to be a key text for contemporary scholars and students of criminology. -

Brought to international and national policy agendas by feminist movements it has lately become a core policy issue discussed not just in the framework of gender equality policy but related to policies on human rights, crime prevention, child protection, health, development, cross border migration and trafficking and conflict and post conflict intervention. This course aims to look at the politics of gender based violence through understanding the main challenges of framing it as a policy issue. Starting from the history of feminist mobilization around gender based violence and the feminist approach to it the course will progress through understanding contestation to the feminist framing, alternative approaches to it and proceed to examining currently available norms and state responses addressing it. The course will pay particular attention to some specific forms of gender based violence such as violence in intimate relations, sexual violence, sexual harassment, traditional forms of violence, trafficking and violence in conflict and post conflict situations. Course Structure The structure of the course will be fourfold. I. The first part of the class will introduce the course, basic concepts of gender based violence, and will discuss approaches coming from cost and measurement of violence. II. The second part of the class will introduce the contestation between the feminist framing of gender violence and other important approaches to gender violence such as human rights, family policy and children’s rights and health approaches. -

“Serial Fiction Podcasting and Participatory Culture” - Robert Yeates | 1 Serial Fiction Podcasting and Participatory Culture: Fan Influence and Representation in The Adventure Zone Technology journalist Frank Rose, in his book The Art of Immersion (2012/2011), argues that we are entering a third age of the Internet. The first of these began with the introduction of the World Wide Web in 1991, which ‘made the Net accessible to ordinary people’. The second was marked by a ‘cornucopia of participation (blogs, wikis, social media) known as Web 2.0’ (Rose, 2012/2011: 7). The third, into which we are now transitioning, is an artistic era: ‘The future beckons, but we’re only partway through inventing it. We can see the outlines of a new art form, but its grammar is as tenuous and elusive as the grammar of cinema a century ago’ (8). As the uses and affordances of new media become better understood and experimental online formats find their footing, this artistic era is beginning to be evidenced in forms of storytelling which take advantage of the contemporary technologies at hand. One example of this is podcast fiction, a format which draws heavily upon established media, radio fiction programming in particular, but which utilizes the unique capabilities associated with the digital file format and online distribution and consumption. Podcasts such as Welcome to Night Vale (2012-present), The Truth (2012- present), and The Message (2015) have acquired large audiences, and certain programs have achieved syndication with media giants American Public Media and National Public Radio. Despite the recent surge in the popularity of podcasts, little scholarly attention has been placed on the format, except to discuss it as merely a continuation of radio programming or a part of a transmedia landscape for texts which are centred in more established media such as television and film. -

In Delaware, you leave with lots and lots of speed, In Maryland, you wait wait wait for traffic to go, In Washington D.C. you go around it so you aren't stressed, In Virginia, you have lots of fun and finally, get some rest. In a week, you have to repeat in reverse! My NBA Mock Draft By: Brady Cole, grade 7 There is an NBA draft every year that introduces teenagers and some young adults get drafted to their dream job, playing basketball for millions of dollars a year. There is a draft lottery, so these teams know exactly which pick they get. Then, a week after, the players that declared to be drafted, there is an NBA combine. The NBA combine is where players measure height, weight, body fat, that stuff. Then they do drills and they go through those and then they have a 5 on 5 scrimmage. The teams get the players’ info, and can decide to schedule workouts with them. In the upcoming weeks, these guys can decide whether to go back to college, or go into the draft. There is a 3 week span where NBA teams can trade their picks, and then the draft begins.
