No question or topic was too large or small for conversations that often carried on into the wee hours of the morning. Caley Horan, Eric Richtmyer, Tim Smit, and Aaron Windel will undoubtedly be lifelong friends, mahjong and euchre partners, fantasy football opponents, kindred spirits at the CC Club and Mortimer’s, and so on. I am especially grateful for the hospitality that Eric and Tim (and Tank the cat) offered during the fall of 2008, as I moved back and forth between Syracuse and Minneapolis. Aaron and I had the fortune of living in New York City at the same time in our graduate careers, and I have fond memories of our walks around Stuyvesant Park in the East Village and Prospect Park in Brooklyn, and our time spent with the folks of Tuesday night. Although we did not solve all of the world’s problems, we certainly tried. One of the many misconception about country music is that its audience is strictly southern and rural; my northern urban working class family listened exclusively to country music. As a teenager I was was more interested in Motown than Nashville, but by the time I reached my early thirties I had became a serious country music fan. -

Ambassadors of Pleasure: Illicit Economies in the Detroit- Windsor Borderland, 1945-1960 by Holly Marie Karibo A thesis submitted in conformity with the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy History Department University of Toronto © Copyright by Holly Karibo (2012) Ambassadors of Pleasure: Illicit Economies in the Detroit-Windsor Borderland, 1945-1960 Holly Karibo Doctor of Philosophy History Department University of Toronto 2012 Abstract “Ambassadors of Pleasure” examines the social and cultural history of ‘sin’ in the Detroit-Windsor border region during the post-World War II period. It employs the interrelated frameworks of “borderlands” and “vice” in order to identify the complex ways in which illicit economies shaped—and were shaped by—these border cities. It argues that illicit economies served multiple purposes for members of local borderlands communities. For many downtown residents, vice industries provided important forms of leisure, labor, and diversion in cities undergoing rapid changes. Deeply rooted in local working-class communities, prostitution and heroin economies became intimately intertwined in the daily lives of many local residents who relied on them for both entertainment and income. For others, though, anti-vice activities offered a concrete way to engage in what they perceived as community betterment. Fighting the immoral influences of prostitution and drug use was one way some residents, particularly those of the middle class, worked to improve their local communities in seemingly tangible ways. These II struggles for control over vice economies highlight the ways in which shifting meanings of race, class, and gender, growing divisions between urban centers and suburban regions, and debates over the meaning of citizenship evolved in the urban borderland. -

These years, specifically those of the 1930s, represent a significant transitional point in American history regarding cultural identity and social class formation. This study seeks to present one profile of how the use of media contributed to a mythic cultural identity of the United States as both classless and middle-class simultaneously. The analysis is interdisciplinary by design and purports to highlight interaction between visual and oral rhetorical strategies used to construct and support the complex myths of class as they formed during this period in American history. 1 Going to the Movies: Early Audiences Introduction to Article Movies were a new form of entertainment for a new century of leisure- hungry Americans. As the average work week decreased and wages rose, men and women sought new ways to spend their increased time and money – and entrepreneurs were happy to accommodate them, for a price. In large cities and small towns, the thirst for fun sparked the rise of a wide range of commercial recreations: amusement parks, dance halls, billiard parlors, vaudeville and burlesque houses, and professional sports. But none of these activities was as popular or widespread as the movies. The first nickelodeon – a term that combined the price of admission with the Greek word for theater – was opened in Pittsburgh on June 19, 1905. The low cost of attending this new institution made it accessible to all but the poorest Americans. By 1910, nearly one-third of the nation flocked to the movies each week; by 1920, weekly attendance equaled 50 percent of the nation’s population. People loved the movies. Richard Butsch looks at nickelodeon audiences and describes what it was like to go to the movies during the early years of silent film. He discussesCOPYRIGHTED who went to the movies, what MATERIAL they saw, and what they did. Butsch shows how movie theaters served as community centers for many poor urban residents. In such films, work represents an important site of tension, not only in the wider struggle in Spain between tradition and modernity, but also in the context of the nation’s changing economic landscape in the late- Francoist period, which saw capitalist reforms, the development of the tourism industry, and the rise of consumer culture. In the context of late Francoism, particularly, with the advent of capitalist reforms, film directors and screenwriters of the 1970s utilized formulaic plots with work-related narrative conflicts as a convenient means to explore the consequences and effects of Spain’s timid economic and social liberalization. Through my examination of eight popular comedies, produced between 1970 and 1977, I analyze how the filmmakers of the period engage with the issue of work, through the specific generic framework of the comedy, in order to ii interrogate larger structural changes in the national economy, as well as the personal consequences of such transformations at the level of the individual for the Spanish working man. -

It treats the nascent genre of films as attempts to recenter white masculinity in the national imagination while navigating the increased visibility of this subject position, one that maintains dominance in society through its invisibility as superordinate standard of manhood.
